CAN-=OPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 697,634, dated April 1 5, 1902.
Application filed May 15 1901- To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK KOTICK, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Littlerock,in the county of Thurston,State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gan-Openers, of which the following is a specification.
My inventionzrelates to can-openers, more particularly of the rotary type wherein a cutting-wheel is employed, and has for its object to provide certain improvements in the construction of the same, as will be hereinafter more particularly described, and set forth in the annexed claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved device. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the cutting-wheel. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of a can, showing my improved opener applied thereto in the act of opening the same. In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 denotes the handle of the device, to which is suitably attached a metallic stem 2, round in cross-area, said stem being provided near its outer end with a circular enlargement 3 and having its outer end, just beyond said enlargement 3, bent downward at 4. and then terminating in a sharp penetrating-point 5, extending parallel with the body of said stem 2, but in difierent plane, as shown. Mounted on said stem 2 and freely adjustable 1ongitudinally thereon is a cutting-wheel 6, the same consisting of a hub 7, slightly larger on one side of the cutting edge than on the other side and a cutting edge having one side flat at 8 and its other side slightly convex at 9.
From the above description the operation of my improved construction will be under stood to be as follows: To open a can 10, the sharp-pointed end 5 of the opener is forced into the center of the top 11 thereof until it reaches the enlargement 3, when by suitably adjusting the cutting-wheel 6 longitudinally on the stem 2 so that it will lie just within the circumference of the top 11 and forcing Serial No. 60,355. said wheel into the top 11 a circular piece may be removed therefrom by rotating the opener on the portion 4. as a center, as will be readily understood.
It will be observed that when in the cutting position the enlargement 3 and the larger outer portion of the hub 7 are in contact with the can-top, the latter resting thereon immediately over the vertical cylindrical wall of the can-body, which is not only the point of greatest resistance offered by the can, but is also the point where the greatest pressure is applied to the opener, said enlargement 3 also acting as a stop for the stem 2 when being inserted into the top, while the hub 7 also acts as a stop to limit the penetration of the cutting edge of the wheel 6.
By forming the wheel 6 straight on its inner side and convex on its outer side I find that the tendency of the cutting-wheel to shift toward the center of the can-top during the cutting operation is obviated, the convex side imparting to it a tendency toward the edge of the can-top, which is of course neutralized by the vertical wall of the can-body, thus causing the said wheel to remain stationary with respect to longitudinal movement on the stem 2 and to describe a true circle.
Having thus described-my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A can-opener,consisting of a handle, a stem having an enlargement near its outer end, a bent portion just beyond said enlargement,
and terminating in a sharp penetrating-point,
and a rotating cutting-wheel mounted and longitudinally shiftable on said stem and consisting of a cutting edge and a hub adapted to contact with the can-top to limit the penetration of said cutting edge, said wheel hav- 9o FRANK norioK.
