IMPROVEMENT IN PISTON-PAGKING.

T0 ALL WHOM lI'I MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, MIFFLIN W. BAILY, of the town of Westchester, in the county of Chester, in the State yof Pennsylvania, have invented a new vmode of Packing Piston-Heads for Pumps or any kind of Engines;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a `true and correct description of my invention7 reference being 'had lto the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my piston-head, showing the spring on which the,packing is set.
Figure 2.is a sectional plan view througha b of the same spring.
,Figure 3 is a. lower end view (plan) i' the piston-h.endshown-fg the spring-catches C S.
Figure 4-is an elevation view of my piston-head, showing how the packing is set on;
The object of my invention is to provide a packing for piston heads which, being set on in a peculiar way, will last much longer than packing set'on according to the old system generally does.
-To .enabl/e others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my pistonhead in' the shape shown in figs. 1 and 4', viz, composed of disks D and D and cylinder part c m, forming recess between D at D', the Whole held in proper relative positions by rod R. On part I mis set a spring, S, which is forced and held tight around 0l m by catch C S, as shown in iig. 1. Then the packing is placed on spiral spring S, so as to fill up the recess between D and D. Whentbe packing has `been thus completed the catch-spring C S is drawn'into D by screwing screw P tight; and as 'soon es C S thus clears its'catch en spiral spring S the latter springs out, forcinglthe packing, in a uniform manner, against tbe barrel of the pump or cylinder. It is obvious that as the packing wezirs out, the spiral spring S, by springing more and more out, will always force whatever remains of the packing against the barrel of the pump or body of the cylinder. v l v I do not intend to claim the diagonal packing shown in my drawings, but I recommend it as the best to be l used in connection with my spring S and cat-ch C S. It will keep better massed together in the back and forth movement ofthe piston-head, and will expand so as to insure a tight and safe joint.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
Spiral spring S, catch-spring C S, applied to piston-heads for pumps or any kind of engines, when combined with the packing'of said piston-head, for the purpose and in the manner above set forth and described.
