arnnt FEEDER FOR YOUNG CALVES OR COLTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 697,304, dated April 8, 1902. Application filed October 31, 1901. Serial No. 80,666. (No model.)
To (til whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROLLAND A. Wnrrnonn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kendallville, in the county of Noble and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Feeders for Young Calves or Colts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to feeders for young calves or colts; and the object of the same is to construct a device of this character which can be readily attached to a fence and be simple in construction and efficient in operation. The novel construction by which this object is accomplished is fully described and claimed in this specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of my device attached to a fence and supporting a bucket. Fig. 2 is a view of the device partly in section.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts in the different views of the drawings.
The numeral 1 designates a clamp or clutch having two downwardly-extending parallel jaws 2, adapted to engage boards 3 on a fence 4. A set-screw 2, mounted in an aperture in the inner jaw 2, serves to make a firmer attachment.
Formed integral with the clutch 1 is a shank 5,which bears a hook 6 for supporting a bucket 7 for containing liquid food, such as milk. A nozzle 8 is pivoted to the outer end of the shank 5 on a pin 9, which enables the nozzle to move in a vertical plane for a purpose which will appear. The nozzle 8 has a connection 10, formed integral therewith, to which a hose-pipe 11 is attached and extends down into the bucket '7. A thumb-screw 12 is mounted in a transverse aperture 13 in line with the aperture in the connection 10. This screw 12 serves to regulate the flow of milk and to give access to the junction of the apertures in the nozzle and coupling, and thereby enables the nozzle to be cleaned.
Rigidly mounted on the outer end of the nozzle is a collar 13, designed to prevent the animal from getting too much of the nozzle into his mouth. A bur 14. is screwedon the tip of the nozzle, and a gasket 15, formed of a piece of rubber hose, is fitted over the bur l t and allowed to project a short distance beyond the tip of the nozzle. A nipple 16 fits over the gasket 15. By this construction the gasket 15 is held by the bur, and the nipple is held by the gasket 15 against removal and also against collapsing by the portion of the gasket projecting beyond the nozzle into the nipple and fitting it snugly. This renders the nipple stiffer and increases its durability.
The operation of the device will be obvious from the foregoing; but there is one point doserving of special mention, and that is the pivoted attachment of the nozzle 8 to the shank 5. This arrangement permits the nozzle to work up and down with the natural movement of an animals head when nursing, and thereby increase the comfort of the animal, which can be more readily taught to use it.
I do not wish to be limited as to details of construction, as these may be modified in many particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a nozzle, of a bur on said nozzle, a flexible gasket over said bur and projectingbeyond the end of said nozzle, and a nipple snugly fitted over said gasket said nipple being held from collapsing by said gasket, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, a shank provided with a clamp for attaching it to a support and a hook for supporting a bucket, a nozzle pivoted to said clamp and having a connection thereon in line with an aperture therein, a hose-pipe attached to said connection, a screw-plug inserted in said aperture to serve to regulate the flow of milk and to give access to the interior of the nozzle, and a nipple on the end of said nozzle, substan tially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
