SAMUEL R. KING, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
NIPPLE FOR NURSING-BOTTLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 540,064, dated May 28, 1 895. Application filed August 1'7, 1894. Serial No. 520,576- (N'o model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL Roscoe: KING, of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nursing-Bottles; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has reference to an improve ment in the construction of the nipple and its attachment to the nursing bottle.
The object of the invention is to facilitate the cleaning and sterilization of the bottle and all parts of the nipple.
The invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction of the nipple as will be more fully set forth hereinafter;
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a nursing-bottle provided with my improved nipple. Fig.2 is a side view of the nipple. Fig. 3 is an end view, and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view, of the nipple on the line X X."
A nursing bottle to meet the present wants requires that all parts canbe readily cleaned and sterilized so as to prevent the adherence, the presence, or the cultivation of bacteria, on any part of the bottle or nipple. To secure this end I have constructed a nipple that rests against the end of the bottle, instead of entering the neck of the bottle,a nipple preferably made of a non-oxidizable metal, such as sterling silver, although I do not wish to be confined to the use of silver, as other metals, alloys of metals, or other suitable materials may be used for the nipple, the most essential quality being that the interior of the nipple can be readily cleaned, sterilized and disconnected from or secured to the bottle.
In the drawings 5 indicates the bottle; 6, the neck of the bottle; 7, the nipple; 8, the hole in the teat; 9, the upper flange; 10, the lower convex flange which bears on the end of the neck 6 of the bottle, so as to form a close joint and yet allow the nipple to rock on the end of the bottle.
11 is a flexible band by which the nipple is secured to the bottle. The flexible band, preferably made of elastic rubber, enters the groove 12 formed between the flanges 9 and 10 and passes under the collar at the end of the neck 6 of the bottle 5.
In the modified form the button 13 is insorted into the base of the nipple, as shown in Fig. 1. This button is provided with the central hole 8' and when used the hole 8 in the end of the teat 7 is made larger so that the button 13 may be pushed out by means of a stick, rod, or wire when the nipple is detached.
The improved nipple, in the preferred form, is flexibly connected with the bottle and can be readily drawn out of the elastic band 11 and the band 11 drawn from the bottle. The bottle and the nipple can now be washed and placed into boiling water to sterilize the same and thereby make them pure and sweet. They can then be quickly connected by springing the band 11 around them as shown.
In the modified form the button 13 is readily pushed out from the base of the nipple by any rod inserted through the hole 8. The button and the interior of the nipple are readily cleaned and sterilized by placing them into hot water.
The nipple being drawn up from sheet metal, preferably silver, does not absorb any acids or liquids. It is always clean and forms an agreeable surface for the gums of children, while the large interior space facilitates cleaning and is not liable to fill up as is the case with nipples, as heretofore constructed, having a long tube extending through the same.
By removing the band 11 the bottle and the nipple can be sterilized by placing them into boiling water without injury to the nipple.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a nursing bottle, the combination with the neck of the bottle provided at its end with an annular projection, of a metal nipple, having thin rigid walls, provided at its base with an outwardly-projecting flange, and the elastic band 11 adapted to secure the nipple to the bottle, as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
SAMUEL R. KING.
