SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 696,049, dated March 25, 1902.
` Application led July 25, 1900. Serial No. 24,773. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, t 77cm/ concern:
Be it known that I, DAvIn E. HUNTER, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident ofY Cambridge, co'unty of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in File-Cabinets, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
My invention isin connection with a drawer adapted for use in filing card-indexes and similar matter.
The details of construction and various advantages of my invention will be pointed out in the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which I have illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, and the latter will be more particularly defined in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure l illustrates my invention in side elevation, parts being broken away and shown in section for convenience of illustration. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section taken on the line 2 2, Fig. l. Figs. 3 andV 4 are fragmentary sectional details taken, respectively, on the lines 3 3 and 4 4, Fig. l. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 5 5, Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a top plan view of one of the drawers removed from the cabinet.
The cabinet A may be of any kind or style, being herein shown as having side panels a and a beaded top d. In devices of this character one customary form of construction requires that the drawers shall be provided at their front and rear ends with raised portions on a level with the top edge of the front of the drawers, these raised portions being rendered necessary in order that the drawer shall lit snugly against the next drawer above for the purpose of being held against tipping and for being retained in snug position at all times. According to my invention, however, the sides b of the drawer are rlevel at their top edge and considerably lower than the top edge of the front b of the drawer. At its outer side'eachside b carries a cleat b2, to
which is secured a depending plate b3, adapt-A position shown in Fig. 1 until the front end of the slide b5 strikes against the front b of the drawer, said guide being also provided with a shoulder D adjacent its front end, against which the plate b3 may abut and limit the opposite movement of the drawer relatively to said slide. At its inner end the slide is provided with a plate, preferably of wood, shown at o7 as considerably elongated and adapted to fit in a slot bs, formed in the nnder side of a track hi. Viewing Fig. 4, it will be seen that said track has a flat upper surface om, on which rides the slide b5, and has a level under surface on which rides the upper surface of said slide, while at its inner sides said track b9 projects so as to inclose the side of the box and is out away at Z912, so as to form a track or pocket along which runs the level top edge of the drawer, said track acting as a stop or retaining device therefor.
From the foregoingdescription itwillbe seen that when the drawer is pulled out it will first slide along between the two tracks, which substantially engage the top and bottom sides thereof, respectively, the drawer itself also sliding relatively to the slides b5 until the plates b3 of the drawer strike against the stops be, whereupon the slides b5 move outwardly with the drawer until both the drawer and the slides are stopped by engagement of the guideplatesb7 with the outer ends of the slots bs. The cards project freely above the sides as high as the front b', if required, and there is no possibility of uneven movement or rattling, binding, or other inconvenience in the withdrawing or pushing in of the drawer, and when the latter has reached its outermost position it is maintained absolutely steady by reason of the engagement of the top and bottom tracks with the top and bottom edges of the sides of the drawer irrespective of the position of the drawer above or irrespective of whether there is any drawer above the one drawn out. y
The drawer has a usual front blockc and a follower-block c, having a guide-iron c4, and a bottom, shown as consisting of three parts c2 c3 c3, properly secured to the drawer at c5.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
IOO
tracks, said slides being connected to and for longitudinal movement relatively of both the drawer and said tracks, and provided with I 3 means for limiting said movement.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DAVID E. HUNTER.
