SETTING INSTRUMENT.
SPECIFICATIDN forming part of Letters Patent No. 695,793, dated March 18, 1902.
Application tiled October 9.1901. Serial No. 78,092. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MoRRis GHAMRnRLAI-N, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bartley, in the countyof Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Setting Instrument, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved setting :instrument designed for various purposes, notably, however, for setting the cutting edge of a squarenosed tool level in a planer, shaper, or like machine, to insure accurate cutting of a key seat or groove, and to allow of setting the instrument quickly for cutting the seat or groove to any desired Width.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure lisa side elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. l.
The improved setting instrument consists, essentially, of a body A, containing a spiritlevel B, the bubble of which appears through an elongated opening C', formed in the top plate C, attached to the body A and provided at its sides with linear graduations C2, having their zero-points coinciding with the zeropoint of the bubble in the spirit-level B. The body A is provided with a downwardly-extending web D, terminating in legs E, extending at an angle of one hundred and fifty degrees and having their apex in vertical alinement with the zero-points of the graduations C2 and the bubble of the spirit-level B. The outer faces of the legs E are provided with linear graduations E', reading from the apex outwardly, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. l.
In order to use the instrument for setting a square-nosed tool on a planer, Shaper, or like machine to cut a key seat or groove, it is necessary for the operator to place the instrument upon the shaft with the legs E tone-hin g the sides of the shaft, and then the instrunient is turned to a level position-that is, until the bubble of the spirit-level B is in a zero position. The square-nosed tool in the tool-post of the planer or shaperis now moved until its cutting edge stands parallel with the upper surface of the top plate C. The cutting-tool is now in proper position. In order 6o to cut a key seat or groove to any desired width, the square-nosed tool is moved along either of the graduations C2 at one side of the zero-line until the distance from the zero-line to the outer end of the cutting edge is equal to one-half the width of the key-seat. The tool is now used in the usual manner to make a cut on the shaft to the desired depth, and then the tool must be moved over to the other side and set in the proper position by meas- 7o urin g with a rule the width of the desired keyseat to be cut.
In order to grind twist-drills to the proper angle, it is necessary t0 place the drill parallel and against the left-hand leg E to bring the cutting edge parallel with the other leg E. The operator now notes the length of one cutting edge bythe graduation E and then turns the drill half-Way around to note the length of the other cutting edge, and the operator so 8o turns the drill and grinds both edges until they have the same length. By having the legs E at an angle of one hundred and fifty degrees the instrument may be readily used for obtaining the sides of hexagonal nuts and the like.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent- A setting instrument, comprising a body 9o having a top plate with a linear graduation,
a spirit-level indicating on the top plate the zero position of the bubble coinciding With the'zero-line of the graduation, and inclined legs integral with the said body and having their apex standing in vertical alinement with the zero position of the bubble, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MORRIS CI-IAMBERLAIN.
