LOUIS MADAS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.,
NKT S ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, OF TWO-THIRDS TO STEPHEN NEEDERMAN AND H. SEY- MOUR GEARY, NEW YORK, N. Y.
AUTOMATIC ENVELOP-SEALER AND STAMP-AFFIXER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 695,408, dated March 11, 1902.
Application filed March 27, 19 01.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIsMADAs, a citizen of the Empire of Austria-Hungary, and a resident of New York, borough of Manhattan, 5 and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Envelop-Sealers and Stamp-Affixers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for sealing and stamping envelops automatically and simultaneously.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character in which 'theoperations of sealing and stamping envelops are done in a simple, effective, more rapid, and less objectionable manner than doing the same by hand/ v To this end theinvention consists of an automatic envelop-sealer and stamp-affixer comon a suitable stand, a feed-belt, power-transmitting wheels, rollers and belts, nioisteningpads for moistening the mucilaged edge of the envelop-flap and the stamps, means for supcompression-rollers for pressing the moistened envelop and stamp in a manner which will be more fully described hereinafter and finally pointed outin the claims, reference 0 being had to the accompanying drawings, in
which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the automatic envelop-sealer and stamp-affixer. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the opposite side thereof. Fig.
3 is a plan view of the device. Fig. 4 is a front view thereof. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the stamp-moistening rollers. Figs. 6 and 7 are views of the moistening-pads. Fig.8 is a cross-section of a pad on line 8 8, Fig. '7;
40 and Fig. 9 is a View of part of the feed-belt, showing the means for engaging each envelop to be carried forward for sealing and stamplng.
Similarletters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, 20 represents the base of the device for automatically sealing and stamping envelops. Secured firmly to the base w are the standards t, which support the envelop-receiving box 8 and the power- Serial No. 53,088. (No model.)
transmitting mechanism. The envelop -receiving box is supported in an inclined position being higher at the front end,and provided with the movable partitions g 9 At each end of the long partition g and the outer end of the partition g is provided a screwg which projects through the slot 8 in the sides of the box'and clamps by means of the thumbscrew the partition in any desired position, so as to accommodate large or small en velops, as desired.
The rollers a and a are arranged, respective'ly; at the rear and front end of the envelop-receiving box 8 adjacent the bottom of the same and are connected by the feed-belt z, the upper length of which lies within the bottom of the box along one side thereof and .issupported approximate the center by the roller T The shaft upon which the roller a is secured is provided at one end with the pulleys i and 7c and at the opposite end with thepulleys 70, I0 and i.
The driving-wheel I), mounted onthe hanger b of the standard t, connects by the belt I) with the pulley t, which imparts rotarymotion to the pulleys and roller on the shaft a. The compression-rollers d and e, mounted at the front end of the device one above the other, are rotated in opposite direction by means of the pulleys c and h, arranged at opposite ends of rollers d and e. Adjacent the pulley h is mounted the shaft g, to the outer end of which is secured the wheel j, connected by the cross-belt f with the pulley t on the shaft a.
The roller g is provided at the in- 8 nor end of the shaft g. and cooperates with the moistening-roller h. These rollers rotate in'opposite direction by means of the gearwheel Z, transmitting motion from the shaft g. The moistening-roller h is covered with the water-reservoir n is secured in an eletoo vated position at the upper edge of the front of the box .9.
Under the sponge-box Jcthe moisteuing-pad m for moistening the mucilaged flap of the envelop is secured at one end to the slidable support at, which is adapted to slide in the Way m, provided on the base 20. The moistoning-pad consists of a sheet-metal holder m, formed with turned-back edges for holding a sponge. The front is provided with a sharp edge, so as to engage the flap of the envelop in order to moisten the same. The moisteuing-pad is inclined from the supporta to a higher point at its outer end and is arranged with the sharp edge nearest the front of the box .9 and with the sponge side opened on the under side. Water is supplied to the moistening pad m from the reservoir a through the tube n In order to maintain the flap of the envelop in contact with the sponge while the envelop is passing outof the box, the supportinglingern is secured to the support at under the moistening-pad. The chute o is secured at its upper end to the front of the box .9, and its lower end projects outwardly to a point above the rollers g and 71.. The feed-belt .2 is connected at its ends by the plate 1), to which is secured the finger p for engaging the envelop to be carried forward by the feed belt for sealing and stamping.
According to the size of the envelops to be sealed and stamped the slidable partitions g g are arranged in the box to provide for receiving the same. The en velops are placed between the partitions and the front of the box 8 singly or in a pile, each envelop arranged with its flap side downward and the flat edge adjacent the side of the box.
The device .is set in motion by turning the crank b of the driving-wheel b, which transmits motion to the roller a and the pulley on the shaft a through the belt o The roller a operates the feed-belt .2", the belts c and 71 .operate the compression-rollers (Z and e, the belt f" operates the moistening and feed rollers h and g, and the belt 7;. operates the supporting-roller 0' In operating the device the finger p of the feed-belt .2" engages the bottom envelop of the pile and carries it forward through an opening provided in the front of the box at the bottom thereof. As the envelop is carried through this opening, the sharp edge of the moistening-pad engages the flap and the finger n presses the mucilaged surface in contact with the sponge. The stamps are fed singly through the chute o and pass between the moistening and feed rollers g and h to be dropped upon the envelop. The stamp is fed into the chute simultaneously with the advance of the envelop, so that the stamp will drop upon the same at the proper point and time. As the envelop is carried forward, having at the same time the flap moistened and the stamp deposited, the same passes between the compression-rollers d and e in order to set the flap and the stamp to the envelop. These operations are performed in one contin uous feed of the envelop from the box.
When it is desired to stamp envelops Without sealing them, the moistening-pad is shifted to one side in the way on, so as to be out of operative relationship to the other part of the machine.
The advantage of the device resides in tho effectual manner in which envelops can be simultaneously or separately sealed or stamped as the operator desires.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An automatic sealing and stamping de vice, consisting of an envelop-receiving box, means for feeding envelops therefrom, means for moistening the flap of the envelop,a stampchute, means for moistening the stamp and dropping the same upon the envelop, and compression-rollers for setting the stamp and flap of the envelop, substantially as set forth.
2. An automatic sealing and stamping machine, consistingof an envelop-receiving box, a feed'belt having means for engaging and carrying forward the envelop, means for operating the feed-belt, a moistening-pad for moistening the flap of the envelop, a stampchute, means for moistening and feeding the stamp to the envelop, and com pression-rollers for setting the stamp and flap of the envelop, substantially as set forth.
3. An automatic sealing and stamping device, consisting of an envelop-receiving box, means'for feeding the envelops therefrom, a moistening-pad, a supporting-finger under said pad, a stamp-chute, a moistening-roller and feed-roller cooperating therewith, compression-rollers, and means forimparting motion to the feed-belt, moistening-roller and compression-roller, substantially as set forth.
4. An automatic envelop stamping and sealing device, consisting of an envelop-receiving boX, adjustable partitions therein, suitable supports for the 'bOX, power-transmitting mechanism mounted in said supports, a feedbelt, a finger provided thereon, a flap-moistening pad, a slidable support for the same, a supporting-finger under said pad and cooperating With the same, a sponge-box for moistening said moistening-roller, means for supplying Water to said moisteniug-pad and sponge-box, compression-rollers, and means for operating said compression-rollers, moistening-rollers and feed-belt, substantially as Set forth.
Signed at the city of New York, in the county of New York, State of New York, this 25th day of March, 1901.
