UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES COLLINS REID, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
ELECTRIC IGNITER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 694,991, dated March 11, 1902. Application filed November 80, 1901, Serial No. 84,172 (No model) To a, whom it may concern:
Be it known that LCHARLES COLLINS REID, a citizen of the United Statesn esiding at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Igniters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,- clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to electricdighting devices; and its obj ect is to form an improved device of said class adapted to light gas or vapor burners.
A further object is to provide a portable device of the class stated havinga spring-actuated sparking device which will give a spark on the passage of the contact-points in either direction.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the device. 'Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof, and Fig. 3 is a detail in elevation at right angles to Fig. 1.
Referring particularly to the drawings, the handle of the device is indicated at 6, being a tube, preferably formed of wood and having at the lower end thereof an opening 7, through which the electric wires enter to the binding-screws 8. Within said tube is located another tube 9, preferably formed of wood, the tubes being detachably secured together by a screw 10. The purpose of the outer tube 6 is to form a handle to the device and to cover and protect the binding-screws. One binding-screw is formed upon the end of a metallic rod 11, which is provided at its upper end with a spring contact-piece 12. A
coiled spring 14 surrounds said rod,out of contact therewith, and terminates at its lower end in electrical contact with the binding-screw 8 and at its upper end in contact with a metallic rod 13, which is formed at its upper end into a loop 13*. I A tube 15, formed of brass or other metal, retains the lower end of the rod 13 in position and the upper end of the spring 14 in contact with said rod. An insulating-tube 16 surrounds the central rod 11 and insulates the same from the tube 15 and the rod 13. The tube 16 has an annular flange 16, forming a finger-piece, by means of which the tubes carrying the rod 13 may be drawn downward to produce a spark at the contact pieces 12 and 13. An inclosing tube 17 ,pref= erably formed of wood, is fitted tightly to the insulating-piece 16 and also to an insulatingpiece 18 at the top thereof. The insulatingpieces 16 and 18 guide the movement of the parts upon the relatively stationary rod 11, The metallic tube 15 is fastened to the insulating-piece 16 by a screw 19, the head of which moves in a slot 20, formed in the tube 9, and guides the longitudinal movement of the parts within said tube and prevents rotary movement thereof. The object of preventing rotary movement is to avoid throwing the pieces 12 and 13*"* into such position that they would not contact. The wires 21 connect to a suitable electric battery.
Inoperation the pieces 12 and 13 are caused to contact by a downward motion of the latter. andin their passing produce a spark, and when the tin ger-pressure is released the spring 14,which is compressed by the downward motion, causes an upward return motion, pro
ducinga second spark as the contact-pieces again pass each other.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An electric-lighting device comprisinga tubular handle, a tubular member detachably secured therein and having a longitudinalslot, a conducting-rod fixed to said tubular memher and having a sparking device at the forward end thereof,an insulating-piece slidably secured in said tubular member and having a projection extending into said slot, a conducting-springbetween the tubular member and the insulating-piece, and a conductingrod in electrical contact with said spring, said rod being secured to and movable with the insulating-piece and having at the forward end thereof a sparking device adapted to contact with the first-mentioned sparking device.
In testimony whereofl affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES COLLINS REID.
