UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERNEST IIIIVIli/IELIYIAN, OF LEROY, NEW YORK.
FRUIT-JAPi-TOP WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 694,748, dated March 4, 1902.
Application filed July 5, 1901. Serial No. 67,193. (Nomodel.)
To cir/ZZ whom, it naar] concern,.-
Be it known that I, ERNEST HIMMELMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leroy, in the county of Genesee and State ot' New York, have invented a new and useful Fruit-Jar-Top Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates io improvements in f ruit-jar-top wrenches, and has for its object to provide a device whereby the tops of jars vcan be easily and readily removed or secured in place.
My invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement ot parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a bottom plan View ot' my invention, and Fig. 2 a side elevation.
In the drawings, in which like numerals of reference denote like parts throughout the several views, l and 2 represent handles pivoted together at 3 and provided with jawsv 4 and 5. Each jaw is provided with a depending bracket 6, having a socket 7, and each arm is provided with a bracket S, having a socket 9, the brackets on the jaws extending below the brackets on the arms, so as tobring the sockets in different planes. Y
l and 1l are spring clampingrings, the ring l0 terminating in arms 12, which are secured in the sockets 9, and the ring 1l terminating in arms 13, which are secured in the sockets 7 ,and as the sockets in the brackets on the jaws are below the plane of those in the brackets on the arms the ring l0 is consequently held in a plane higher than that of the ring 11. These clamping-'rings are capable of being removed from their sockets and others inserted in case it is found that they arenot of the proper circumference for the purpose required, and the ring l0 is preferably made slightly smaller than the ring 11 for the purpose of accommodating the wrench to jar-tops which taper. The clamping-rings are covered by rubber tubing 14:.
When itis desired to remove the top of a jar, the handles of the wrench are forced apart, which also opens the jaws, and as the ends of one ot' the clamping-rings are attached to the handles and the ends of the other clampingring to the jaws theV clampingrings are expanded and practically come into alinement. The clamping-rings are then passed over the top of the jar and the handles forced together, which also closes the jars and the clampingrings are contracted, thereby clamping the jar-top, and it is then only necessary to turn the wrench in the proper direction to remove the jar-top. It it is desired to force the jartop on, the wrench is turned in the opposite direction to that required to remove the jartop.
Although I have described the jar-top wrench as applicable for use with fruit-jars, it may be used equally as well with cans and other vessels, and although I have herein set forth a construction, combination, and arrangement Whereby the objects of my invention maybe accomplished it comes Within the spirit of my invention to depart somewhat therefrom.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1.` A jar-top wrench comprising pivoted handles havingV jaws and expansible clamping members which whenl expanded open in opposite directions, substantially as described. i
2. A jar-top wrench comprising lpivoted handles having jaws and expansibl'e clamping members which when expanded open in opposite directions, one of said members carried by the handles and the other by the jaws, substantially as described.
3. A jar-top wrench comprising pivoted handles having depending brackets carrying an expansible clamping member, and jaws having depending brackets carrying an ex I pansible'ciamping member, the brackets on the jaws extending below the brackets on the handles for the purpose of locating the ciamping members in different planes, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two snbscribin g witnesses.
ERNESTy HIMMELMAN.
` Witnesses r CHARLES F. KELLoee, HARRY H. FALKNER.
