TO ALL WIIOM IT MAY CONOERN:

Be it known that I, OTIs DEAN, of Richmond, in Athe county of Henrico, and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pots for Mucilage, Varnish, or other material, or for marking purposes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made part of this specification.

The first part of this invention consists in providing the mucilage or other pot with a vessel in which to keep the brush when not in use, the said vessel being charged with water, spirits of turpentine, or other suitable material, so that the brush will be preserved in a clean, soft, and pliable condition.

The second part of the invention consists in the application to the lid of a hinged rod, which, when the lid I is opened, entends across the mouth of the main reservoir, and affords a men. of wiping the brush without clogging the pot.

Figures 1 and .2 are vertical sectional views of` a mucilage-pot embodying my invention.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two gures.

'Ihat my invention may be fully understood I will proceed to describe it as applied to mueilage-pots.

A is the mueilage-reservoir, and B a lid, hinged to the top thereof, and employed to cover and uncover' the mouth or opening C, through which the brush is introduced tovdip up the mucilage. D is a water-containing vessel, which may be permanently or detachably secured to the top of the reservoir A. The brush E, whengiot in use, is immersed in D, as shown in fig. 2, the intention being to obviate the previously-existing disadvantages due to allowing the brush to remain in the mucilag-e. Thus, in using my improvements, the water in D serves to keep the brush soft and pliable and clean; and when the brush is to be brought into requisition it is withdrawn from D, upon whose upper edge it may be wiped to express the water, and introduced into thel mucilage-rescrvoir through C. IIence any ldesired quantity of` mucilage can be taken upon the brush whenever it is used, and any superfluity is wiped oil` upon the rod F, which is jointed to another' rod, F', hinged to the lid B, so asvto extend across the mouth C when said lid is open, as shown in fig. I When the lid B is closed these bars F F become immersed in the reservoir, and are thus prevented from clogging with solidified paste. If preferred, however, a single bar may be rigidly attached across the mouth ofthe pot., or in some other convenient position, on which to wipe the brush. By allowing the brush to constantly remain in the mucilage, as in the common mncilagepot, it 'necessarily becomes clogged and impaired,Y and frequently unfit for use.

By making the brush-receptacle D removable its contents may readily be emptied into the main reservoir whenever they have become impregnated with the gum or other material. i

In applying my invention to marking, Avarnish. or paint-pots, spirits of turpentine may be used'in the brushreceptacle D.

IIaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

I. The provision, in combination with the reservoir A for mueilage, varnish, or other material, of a brushreceptacle, D, to contain a suitable material to keep the brush moist, as explained.

2. In combination with a pot for mucilagc or other material, I claim a bar, F, for the purpose specified.

3. The bar F, applied to the lid in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
