UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE,
CARL WVILHELM LUDWIG SCHMIDT, OF HOLZMINDEN, GERMANY.
CYCLE-STAN D.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 694,030, dated February 25, 1902,
Application filed April 27, 1900. Serial No. 14,546. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL WILHELM LUD- WIG SCHMIDT, a subject of the Duke of Brunswick, residing at Holzminden-on-the-Weser, in theDuchy of Brunswick, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cycle-Stands, (for which I have applied for patents in England, No. 4,869, dated March 14, 1900; in Germany, dated March 9,
1900 5 in Austria, dated March 13, 1900; in Hungary, No. 3,792, dated March 17, 1900; in France, No. 286,390, dated March 14:, 1900, and in Belgium, No. 117,219, dated March 13, 1900,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved cyclestand for supporting cycles when at rest and for cleaning and display purposes, the same being characterized by its simplicity, adjustability, and the ease with which it can be packed into a small compass.
When in its opened-out position, the cyclestand according to this invention consists of one vertical and two slanting or diagonal members or rods, the two latter members being jointedly connected about a third of their way down to the top of the said vertical member or rod in such a manner that they can fold upon each other and become one member or rod when required. One of the slanting rods or members is provided at its top end with an extension for embracing the rear diagonal member of the cycles framing, and farther down on the same rod a bowl-shaped extension is provided for the reception of the bottom bracket of the cycles framing. On
, the top end of the other slanting rod or member an extension is jointedly connected for embracing the adjoining front diagonal member of the cycles framing and, if necessary, looking it in position so that the cycle cannot be taken away Without the stand accompanying it. The slanting rods or members are adapted to different-sized cycles by means of a chain connected to their lower portions. The tension of this chain is altered by placing it on hooks situated one above the other on the vertical rod of the stand, so that the slanting rods can be made to take and retain any angle required of them.
The accompanying sheet of drawings depicts the cycle-stand holding the members of a cycle-framing in position.
at is a vertical member of the stand jointedly connected to its slanting members I) and c by a pin a. These members are preferably 5 5- made of wood of a circular section flattened at their points of connection. The slanting member 6 of the stand has a semicircular projection or lug e formed on its top end for embracing and holding the adjoining rear diag- 6o onal framing of the cycle, while a bowl-shaped extension f farther down on the said slanting member or rod receives and holds the cycles bottom bracket. The other slanting member or rod of the stand has a clip or extension 6 g jointedly connected to its top part for embracing and holding the front diagonal member of the cycles framing. This clip or ex tension g being jointedly connected can be moved either forward or rearward of its rod 76 or member to embrace and hold its adjoining framing and can be locked in its holding po' sition, if desired, so as to secure the cycle against tampering or theft.
The slanting members or rods 1) c of the stand can be made to accommodate, any size of cycle by tensioning orslackening a chain h, attached to their lower ends. The tensioning or slackening of this chain is efiected by placing it on different hooks 'i, situated one 80 above the other on the vertical member or rod (1 of the stand.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent of the United States, is
In a cycle-stand, the combination of the two bars I), c, pivoted together between their ends, the bar 0 being provided at its upper end with a rounded bracket f extending outwardly from the bar b, the other bar 0 being provided at its upper end with a hinged band 0 9 adapted to encircle a portion of the bicycleframe, a bar d pivoted at its upper end to said pivot, and a chain connected to said bars I) and 0 below their pivot, and stops secured to the bar dforengaging said chain to lengthen 9 5 or shorten it, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
CARL WILHELM LUDWIG SCHMIDT.
