In carrying out my invention the articles tobe wrapped are fed progressively along a chute and are delivered one at a time upon a moving strip of paper and therewith upon a vertically-movable platform, and I employ sin gle-acting folders and tuckers, and folders kin vertically and horizontallymoving pairs for lapping the edges of the wrapping-paper, A
forming the double end folds and upturning the folded ends and so completing the envelop and delivering the wrapped articles, and mechanism for'progressively actuating such devices, all of which are hereinafter more particularly set forth.

The main shaft a is supported in bearings upon bracket extensions of the standards B B, and on one end of said main shaft is a hand-wheel d' and on the opposite end a power-wheel a2. The said main shaft also carries a small gear c, which meshes with the large gear-d on the cam-shaft b, and the saidV camshaft b is supported in bearings upon the said standards B B, the said large gear d being loose upon the cam-shaft b, as is also the cam e, which is made fast to the large gear d, the movement as between the gear d and cam e being communicated to the shaft by means 0f devices hereinafter more particularly described. The cam-shaft b also carries cams e', e2, e3, and e4. A rocker-armfis pivoted to the standard B and is provided with a roller bearing upon the cam e, and a spring f is connected at one end to the rockerarmj and at the other end to a short post fixed to the base A, the ofIice of the springf being to hold the roller of the rocker-armf against the said cam. The arm g is pivoted to the standard B nearest to the large gear and said arm is provided with a bent lower end, and I employ a spring g', one end of which' is connected to the said arm and the other end to the same post to which the spring f is connected, said spring g tending to press the bent lower end of the arm g against the surface of a collar t, hereinafter described.
A rocker-arm 7t,having a roller in the groove of the cam e', is pivoted to the base of the standard B in line with the pivot of the rocker-arm f, and this rocker-arm h carries a slotted frame h', the oflice of which is to move the top-folder 7 in one direction and to form a guide for parts hereinafter described. The rod 36 of the top-folder 7 has a fixed adj ustable collar h2 adjacent to the frame h', against which the frame bears.
t' c" are companion rocker-arms pivoted to the standard C and each carrying a roller moving in grooves in the large cam e2, which cam imparts to said rocker-arms vertical or up-and-down movements, the free ends of said rocker-arms passing int-o slotted frames connected to operating parts hereinafter described. y
An arm k is connected to a shaft 45, in bearings on the pedestal D, and the free end of said arm is provided with a roller moving in the slot of the cam e3 for eecting the operation of parts hereinafter described. A
rocker-arm l is pivoted at `one end to a bearsize for Wrapping the article passing through the machine. i
A rod m is pivoted to the rocker-arm f and slides through parts of the bracket-frame D', and a rod n, pivoted to the rocker-ar1n h, also slides through parts of the said bracket-frame, and I provide a springmon the rod m, between adjustable heads, for applying a yielding tension to the said rod m and the parts connected therewith.
The chute o occupies an inclined position, and pivoted to the lower end of the said chute is an oscillating hopper o', provided with hook-ended armsB. An arm 16, secured to the bracket-frame D' and to which the said chute is pivotally connected, carries a crossbar 17, adjustably secured thereto, and an arm 18 is pivoted to the chute and comes be.- tween the lower end of the chute and the u pper surface of the cross-bar, so that the chute is supported by its pivotal connection tothe arm 16 and by resting upon the arm 18 and the cross-bar v17. This arm 18 is `provided with an upturned end passing up between the sides of the chute into the path of articles coming down the chute, and said arm is provided'with a hook end 19. (See especially Figs. 7 and 8.) i
A slide-frame 4, carrying a roller 5, is connected by an arm 2l to the rod m, sothat with the longitudinal movement of the rod fm by the rocker-arm f the said slide-frame `and roller are moved back and forth over the surface of the plate 10, which plate has a vertical ICO open portion through which thearticle to be i wrapped is caused to pass, and I provide, pivotally connected to the chute, a gravity-roller 20, (see Figs. 1 and.7,) the office of which is to prevent the articles coming down the chute becoming displaced.
I provide a vertically-movable platform 8, with a bracket extension 9, having two upright portions forming "guides, and a slideblock 6 is adapted to move over the surface of the said platform and bracket extension, and said slide-block is provided with a rod 38, passing through openings in the upright portions of the said bracket extensions which form guides therefor, and connected by a setscrew, and fixed to the said rod 38 is a bent arm 47, with the longer part placed substantially vertical and havingla tapering lower end. A roller 48 on the large cam e2 acts periodically against the lower end of the arm 47 to move the same, the rod 38, and the slideblock 6 in a forward direction when the plat` 7 having a hollow upper surface, and a rod 36 is connected to said top-folder, and it extends through openings in the uprights of the bracket extension 9', which form guides therefor. A spring 37, secured to the upper surface of the first of said uprights, bears at its free end upon the upper surface of the said top-folder, exerting a pressure to hold the y same down againstlthe slide-block 6.
The bed-plate r rests u pon the bracketframe D', in grooves inthe innersurface thereof, so that the surfaces of the bed-plate andv the depending ribs of the bed-plate r, the said slide-block lying closely adjacent to the undersurface of the said bed-plate r. Said bedplate r has connected to its upper surface guides 25 for the paper, which passes beneath the same over the surface of the bed-plate r, and upon the said guides 25 are bearings 26 for the shaft of Vthe upper feed-roll 27, the pivoted plate 10 having trunnions also connecting the same to the said shaft of the feedroller outside of the bearings 26. f
The under feed-roller 30 is pivoted in a yoke-frame 3l, the said yoke-'frame in turn being pivotally connected to the guide-pin 24, and I provide one of the depending ribs from the bed-plate r with a bracket-arm 28, extending across beneath the slide-block 11. To this bracket-arm 28 is secured a spring 29, and an adjusting-screw 32 (see Figs.v 7 and 10) rests in the forked end of the spring 29 and screws through the end of the .yoke-frame 31, the spring performing the office of holding the under feed-roller 30 against the upper feed-roller 27, the tension being regulated by the said adj Listing-screw 32. I provide an arm 22, (see Figs. 1, 7, 9, and-10,) that is of offset form, with a hub surrounding the rod n and adjustably secured thereto by a set-screw. The free end of said arm 22 is forked and receives a pin 23, extending ydownward from the slideplate 11, and with the movement of the rod 'n by the rocker-arm h the slide-plate 11 and the roller 12 receive a longitudinal forward and backward movement by means of this arm 22. y
Aratchet 33, normally held by the retaining-pawl, Fig. 9; is secured upon one end of the under feed-roller 30, and arack 34 is pivoted tothe arm 22, and a spring 35, also secured to the arm 22, bears at its free end upon the under side of the rack 34, tending tokeep the teeth of the rack in mesh with the teeth of the ratchet 33. From this it will be noticed that when the arm 22 and the rod n are movingtoward the right handthe teeth of `the rack 34 will slip past the teeth of the ratchet 33 because of the spring action, and uo movement will be imparted to the `feed-rollers, but when the rod n and the arm 22 are moving to the left the teeth of the rack 34 will engage the teeth of the ratchet 33 and turn the under feed-roller and impart to the paper passing between lthe two feed-rollers a `forward movement toward the vertically-moving platform 8 and the parts adjacent thereto.
-In the position of the parts shown in Figs. 7, 9, and .1.0 it will be noticed that the arm 22 comes between the under surface of one of the depending ribs of the bed-plate r and the upper surface of a slight projection formed upon, or integral therewith, the spring 29. The projection has a cam function, and this position tends to force the spring 29 downward to release and permit the yoke-f rame 31 to slightlyV descend by gravity, so as to separate the contacting surfaces of the upper and lower feed-rollers, and that as soon as the arm 22 moves to the right it moves off the projection and permitsthe spring 29 to return to a normal position, bringing the surface of the feed-rollers together and frictionally holding the same with vthe paper `between them, while the rack 34 moves over the surface of the ratchet 33, and that as the parts return to the left hand the rack 'turns the ratchet and thev lower feed-roller, and feeds the paper. The parts remain in the same position until the said arm-22 again rides over the slight projection and releases the pressure between the rollers and stops the feed of the paper. These parts are so timed that the desired quantity of paperis fed with themovement-that is to say, sufficient paper to cover the article to be wrapped. 7
I employ a pair of tuckers 13 in the form of rectangular plates of metal secured to depending spring-arms, the lower ends of which are securedto a cross-head 42, andV to this cross-head a verticalmovement is imparted by means of the rocker-arm i', the free end of which rocker-arm'A engages a mortise in a frame forming part of the said cross-head, and the said cross-head is connected to a tube 40, which slides upon and outside of a tube s, the tube s passing down into the pedestal D and being securely connected thereto in any desired manner. are provided with 'cam projections ,43, and the upright portionsof the pedestal'are slotted to receive adjustable pins 44, and with the downward movement of the cross-head 42 and the tube 40, by means ofthe rockerarrn 1l', the said tuckers are drawn down, and as their cam projections strike upon the pins 44 the said tuckers are pressedtoward one The arms of the said tuckers IOO IIO
another and against the-surfaces of thear- `39 are given a vertical movement,- the tube s serving as a guide, as hereinbefore stated, to keep said parts in vertical line. Y
14 represents end side folders in pairs at either side of the machine. These folders are connected to rods extending downward and passing through the shafts 45, that have their bearings in the pedestal 'D. (See especially Figs.,11 and 1.)' The shafts 45 are provided with end screws bearing against the rods ofthe said folders, andwhile the said rods are movable vertically through the said shafts the said end 'screws tix their location. The said shafts 45 are connected by toggle-bars 46, and they are operated by the arm 7c, extending from the end of'one shaft, with the free end of the said arm andthe roller thereon operatively connected with thecam e3, the said earn im parting a swinging movement to the said arm and through the same a swinging movement to the pairs of end side-folders. Theendfolders 15 (see especially Figs. 1, 3, 4,19, and 21) are in the form of spring-blades with overturned free ends, the lower ends of-said folderblades being connected upon oppositefaces of thepedestalD by screws. (Shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 4.) These end-folders are slotted-for the vertical movement of the cross-head 42.
The collar t, hereinbefore referred to, issecurely fixed to the cam-shaft b. This collar is preferably made 'of a block of metal-of irregular forni, as hereinafter described, with a side plate riveted thereto. (SeeFigs. 37 and 3S.) One face of this collar is shownin full lines-in Fig. 27 and in dotted lines in Fig. 26, and thereverse side is shown in Figs.- 33 and In Figs.26, 27, 33, and 34 the relation Vofthe collar and the parts 4connected therewith to the cam e is clearly illustrated. The periphery of this collar is of irregular outline, and in a recessed portion or groove 57H thereof a dog 49 is connected by a pivotpin 50 to the said collar, and a spring is provided and located in a recess in the under surface of the dog and the face of the collar and shown by dotted' lines, thespring acting to press the dog outward. This'collar is also provided with a projection 51 and a side projection 53 and central projection 55, Aand the lowerbent end of the arm gis provided with a stop-face 52, a projection 54, anda free end 58. The projection-53of the collar is adapted to come against the projection 54fof the arm g andltheprojection lof the collarzf-against the stop-face 52 of the arm g, the parts meeting and stopping practicallysimultaneously and forming a duplicate locking device with reference to the collar t, and from-'Fig` 26it will be noticed that the cam `e isA provided with a recess in theopposite face,(shown by a heavy dotted line-,) said recess'having a tooth 56 and receiving thelarger part of the collar t Within the recess. l
Initheposition of the respective parts shown in Fig. 27 it will be noticed that the free end of the arm g is in the cut-away portion 57 of the collar t, in contact with the back peripheral surface, and that the dog 49 is held within the peripheral limits of the collar by coming in contact with the surface of the arm g, so that the dog 49 is held out of the path of the tooth 56 of the cam e. The devices, Figs. 26 and 27, act in the capacity of a clutch, the ofce ofthe dog 49 being to engage the tooth 56 of the cam e as the cam revolves in the direction ofthe arrow and in the position of the dog in whichthe same is released so as to be projected by the spring, the earn then bearing uponthe dog, as in the position-Fig. 34,*turns the collar t and with it the cam-shaft Z) setting the parts in operation, the parts being set in-motion only when articles are passing through the machine and being Wrapped,
as by reference to Fig. 2, it will be noticed" that the arm 47, that is moved in one direction by the roller48, acts upon its backward movenient upon the bent upper end of thearrn g' to swing said arm on the pivot connecting the same to the standard B, which movement draws the lower bent end of. the arm away from the collar to free the dog, (see Fig. 34,) whereas when no articles are passing through the machine the spring g holds the lower end of thearm against the collar and confines the position of the dog, so that it cannot engage the tooth of the-cam, and the cam and the large gear turn around the collar free and' unimpeded. (See Figs. 26, 27, and 33.)
Figs. 12 to 25, inclusive, show the various stages infthc operation of the machine. In Fig. l2 the paper is shown as advanced-beyond the end of the guide and over the tuckers. and have carried up the free end of the paper outside of and parallel with the upturned end of the plate 10, in which position the paper-is held. Fig. 14 illustrates the articles to be wrapped, as upon the paper surface and against the bent end of the paper. Fig.` 15 shows the slide-frame 4 and the roller 5 as hav-ing been advanced against the article and as having forced the article to be wrapped through the opening in the plate 10 and upon the vertically-moving platformV 8, the operation of the slide-frame 4, as hereinbefore stated, being eected through the arm 21, the rod m, and the rocker-armf. It will be noticed from Fig. 15 that this slide-frame 4 in pushing the article with the paper over the platform bends the free end of the paper under the top-folder 7 and causes the slideblock 6 ^to be moved back from its `position over the platform, and while the'parts in this figure are shown as slightly separated they are in practice closely in contact. Between the positions Fig. 15 and Fig. 16 the platform has been drawn` down by the'rock'er-arm 1l, and the pivoted plate 11 and roller 12 have been lmoved forward by the arm 22 and the rod n, and simultaneously with said movement the knife 1 has severedthe strip of `paper and the roller 12 has folded the paper adjacent to the severed edge over the article, simultaneously pushing the top-folder rear-- In Fig. 13 the tuckers have been raised ward out of the way, the full movement being illustrated in Fig. 17, in which the folded paper is given the form shown in Fig. 18, with the article located centrally of the folded body of paper.
While the parts are held in the position Fig. 17, the ers 13 are moved down by the cross-head 42 and the rocker-arm t" and are moved in and held by their cam projections 43 coming against the pins 44,the tuckers creasing in the folded paper at the respective ends of the article making the fold, as shown in Fig. 20, the next position being shown in Fig. 2l, where the end side-folders 14have beenset in movement by the arm lc and the toggle-bars 46 and. inturn the sides of the paper at the respective ends of the package, the
folded' form being represented in Fig. 22.
Between the position Fig. 19 and the posi-. tion Fig. 2l the slide-plate 11 and roller l2 have been returned to a normal position and the topfolder moved over the package. From the position Fig. 21 the platform 8 with its bracket extension 9 and the parts connected therewith have beenmoved down by the rockerarm fi, and the ends of the paper have been upturned by being -passed forcibly between the end-folders 15, which give a nal wrapped form, as shown in Fig. 24, tothe package. The limit of movement imparted to theplatform 8 brings the same approximately on a level with the opening through the pedestal D, adjacent to the delivery-chute D2, and at this place the slide-block 6 is moved forward by means of the 'arm 47, acted upon bythe roller 48 on the cam e2, forcing the package through the opening and deliveringthe same upon the chute, the operations thus being completed and the respective parts return-g ing to a normal position .in which, with thel backward movement of the rod n and the arm 22, the rack 34 acts upon the ratchet V33v to feed forward the paper preparatory to repeating the operations. Inthis return movement the slide-block remains in they position Fig. 25, and the same is moved backby the entrance of another article to be wrapped. (See Fig. 15.) By reference to Figs. 7 and 8 the diiferent positions of the chute o will b e apparent. In Fig. 8 the oscillating hopper o is in a position to receive an article coming down the chute, an edge of the hopper 0' resting upon the hook end 19 and the hook-ended arm 3` being in contact with the projection or pin c' upon the slide-frame 4. The chute o between the action of these two parts is elevated, so that the upturned end of the arm 18 is out of the vpath of the chute and does not impede the downward movement of the articles therein. The movement of this oscillating hopper .0 is controlled by the back-and-forth `movement of the slide-frame 4, and.it will be apparent that from the position Fig. 8 as the slide-frame moves to the left the said hopper and chute are lowered with the retreat of the slide-frame,so that the upturned end of the arm 18 again comes between the article in the hopperand the first article in the chute, the hook end 19 tending to'elevate and to tip forward the oscillating hopper upon its pivotal connection with the chute and to finally turn the said hopper when its center of gravity passes the pivot, as loadedv vwith the article to be wrapped, so that the hopper is completelyy overturned into the position Fig. 7, delivering one article at a time,

predetermined regular forms, the same is especially devised and adapted for wrapping caramels and articles'ofsimilar form or character, the paper therefore being treated with paraffin; but I do not limit myself to that particular use of the machine. Y l
The collar t, arm g, and dog 49 may be dispensed with and the large gear d secured directly to the cam-shaft b, ify desired; but in such instance the disadvantage would be that the entire mechanism would run continuouslyl and feed and waste paper if no articles were being fed into the machine.

I do not herein limit myself totheprecise mechanical devices or arrangement of parts, as deviations therefrom or equivalent modifications thereof maybe employed for performing the same functions.
I claim as my inventionl. In a package-wrapping machine and in combination, a receivinghopper, devices foi" successively feeding and delivering an article at a time upon a movable strip of paper, devices for moving the article along and means for simultaneously folding the free end of the paper around Qneside of the article and holding the paper in position, means for severing the paper, and devices for fold-` ing the freed edge of the paper over the article and lapping the edge upon the first fold, tuckers, end side-folders and end-folders in pairs for progressively folding the paper at the Vends and for forming the double end folds and acting in connection with the chute for arresting the movement ol the articles in the chute during themovenlent of the hopper, substantially as set forth.
3. In a packagewrapping machine, the combination with a chute and an arm to which the same is pivotally connected, of a crossbar adjustably connected to the said arm, an oscillating hopper pivoted to the lower end of the chute, a device pivoted to the hopper and located between the hopper and the crossbar and performing the functions of turning the oscillating hopper in one direction and simultaneouslyarresting the downward movement of articles in the chute while an article is being delivered from the hopper, and means for returning the oscillating hopper to its normal position and simultaneously moving the said device out of the path of the articles so that the hopper is again filled andthe operations repeated, substantially as set forth.
4. In a packagewrapping machine, the combination with a chute and an arm to which the same is pivotally connected, of a crossbar adjustably connected to the'said arm, an oscillating hopper pivoted to the lower end of the chute, a device pivoted to the hopper and located between the hopper and the crossbar and performing the twofold function of turning the oscillating hopper in one direction and simultaneously arresting the downward movement of articles in the chtite while l an article is being delivered from the hopper,
and means for returning the oscillating hopper to its normal position and simultaneously moving the said device out of the path of the i articles so that the hopper is again filled and the operations repeated, and a pivoted gravity-roller acting above the chute to insure the proper movements of the articles passing down the chute, substantially as set forth.
5. In a package wrapping machine, the
the chute, a device pivoted to the hopperand located between the hopper and the cross-bar and performing thetwofold function of turning the oscillating hopper in one direction and simultaneously arresting the downward movement of articles in the chute while an article is being delivered from the hopper, and means for returning the oscillating hopper to its normal position and simultaneously moving the said device out of the path ofthe articles so that the hopper is again filled and the operations repeated,and a longitudinallymovable device having two projections and performing the twofold function of advancing the article del-iveredby the hopper, returning the hopper to a normal position and simultaneously elevating the hopper and chute to permit of the downward movement of the articles in the chute, and the delivery of one article at a time into the hopper, substantially as set forth. 6. In a package wrapping machine, the combination with thc bed-plate and the pedestal supporting the same and parallel depending ribs from the bed plate forming guides, of a guide for the paper upon the bedplate, an upper feed-roller "in suitable bearings therefor, a yoke-frame pivoted to the bed-plate andan under feed-roller pivoted in the yoke-frame and a spring and adjusting screw for applying pressure and for regulating the tension of contact between the surfaces, substantially as set forth.
7. In 'a package wrapping machine, the combination with the bed-plate and the pedestal supporting the same and parallel depending ribs from the bed plate for-ming guides, of a guide for the paper upon the bedplat'e, an upper feed-,roller in bearings connected therewith, a 4yoke-frame pivoted to the bed-plate, and an under feed-roller pivoted in theyoke-frame, and spring-actuating devices for` applying pressure and for regulating the tension of contact between the su rfaces of the feed-rollers, and longitudinallymovable devices acting periodically to overcome the action of the spring and permit the yoke-frame to descend to separate thesurface of the feed-rollers, substantially as set forth. i -i 8. In a package wrapping machine, the combination with the bed-plate and the pedestalsupporting the same and parallel depending ribs from the bed -plate forming guides, of a guide for the paper upon the bed- IIO plate, an upper feed-roller in bearings connected therewith, a yoke-frame pivoted to the bed-plate, and an under feed-roller pivoted in the yoke-frame and a spring and adjusting-screw for applying pressure and for regulating the tension of contact between the sur faces, an oifset arm, a longitudinallymovable rod to which the said arm is connected, and
devices for lnoving the said rodand arm, the arm being adapted to depress the spring to release the tension thereof and cause the yoke-frame to descend and separatethe rollers, a ratchet upon one end of the lowerfeedroller, a spring-actuated rack pivoted to said arm and adapted with the movement in one direction to rotate the lower feed-roller at a time when the rollers bear frictionally in contact with one another so as to feed the paper forward, substantially as set forth.
9. In a package-wrapping machine, the combination with a vertically-movable platform, a slide-block, a top-folder and means for actuating the same, of-means foi-deliver ing an article at a time upona strip of paper and for periodically feeding forward such strip of paper, a slide-frame and roller, an armand a horizontally-actuated rod for imparting a back-and-forth movement tothe slide-frame and roller to force the article to be wrapped out upon the vertically-moving platform and sim ultaneously movingtheslide block out of the way, a slide-plate and roller, an arm and horizontally-actuated rod connected therewith for imparting a bacleandforth movement to the said slide-plate and roller for completing the first fold of thefpaper around the article and a knife and means for operating the same for simultaneously severing the strip of paper, substantially as set forth.
l0. In a package-wrapping machine, the combination with a vertically-movable platform, a slide-block, a top-folder and means for actuating the same, of means for delivering an article at a time upon a strip ofpaper and for periodically feeding forward such strip of paper, a slide-frame and roller, an arm and a horizontally-actuated rod for imparting a back-and-forth movement to the slide-frame and roller to force the article to be wrapped out upon the vertically-movable platform and simultaneouslymovingtheslideblock out of the way, a slide-plate androller, an arm and horizontally-actuated vrod connected therewith for imparting a back-andforth movement to the said slide-plato and roller for completing the first fold of the paper around the article, and a knife and means for operating the same for severing the strip of paper, and a pair of tuckersand devices connected therewith for imparting thereto both a vertical and an approaching movement for giving to the paper the second fold at either' end of the article and forholding the tuckers in such position for an appreciable period, substantially as set forth.

In a package-wrapping machine, the combination with a vertically-movable platform, a slide-block, a top-folder and means for actuating the same, of means for delivering,r an article at a time upon a strip ofpaper and for periodically .feeding forward such strip of paper, a slide-frame and roller, an arm and a horizontally-actuated rod for irnparting a back-and-forth movement to the slide-frame and roller to force the article to be wrapped out upon the vertically-movable platform and simultaneously moving the slideblock ont of the way, a slide-plate and roller, an arm and horizontally-actuatedfrod connected therewith for imparting a back-andforth movement to the said slide-plateand roller for completing the first fold of the paper around the article and a knife and means for operating the same for simultaneously severing the strip of paper, and apairfof tuckers and devices connected therewith for imparting thereto both a vertical and an approaching movement for giving to the paper the second fold at either end ofthear'ticle and for holding the tuckers in such position for an appreciable period, and endside-folders in pairs at either side of the machine, and
devices connected therewithfor imparting thereto simultaneousmovements to give to the paper the end folds from each side, substantially as set forth.

In a package-,wrapping machine, the combination with a vertically-movable platform, a slide-block, a top-folder, and means for actuating thesa-me, of means for delivering an article at a time upon astripl of paper and for periodically feeding forwardy such' strip of paper, a slide-frame and roller, an arm and a horizontally-actuated rod for im-A parting a back-and-forth movement tothe slide-frame and roller to force the article to --be wrapped out upon the vertically-movable platform, and simultaneously `moving' the slide-block out of the way, a slide-plate and roller, an arm and horizontally-actuated rod connected therewith forimpartin g a back-andforth movement to the said slide-plate and roller for completing the first fold of the paper around the article and a knife and means for operating the same for simultaneously severing the strip of paper, and a pair of tuckers and devices connected therewith for imparting thereto both a vertical andan approaching movement for giving to the paper the second fold at either end of the article and for holding the tuckers in such position for an appreciable period, and end side-,folders in pairs at either side of the machine and devices connected therewith for imparting thereto simultaneous movements to give to the paper the end folds from each side before the tuckers fully release their hold, and endfoldersin the form of vertically-placed springarms to upturn the folded ends of the paper and so complete the envelop around the article wrapped with the downward movement of the vertically-movable platform,- substantially as set forth. package-wrapping machine, the I bearing the top-folder downward, a guide for the vertically-movable platform and a rockerarm and cam for operating the same for irn- Vparting to said platform the up-and-down .said rod moves, a slotted frame also connected to the said platform, a rocker-arm t' pivoted to the machine and having a roller with the free end of the arm in the said slotted frame and a cam for imparting an up-anddown movement to the rocker-arm, the rod and the platform and the parts connected therewith, substantially as set forth.
l5. In a package-wrapping machine, the combination with a pair of tuckers 13 and arms to which the same are connected, and a crosshead 42, means at the ends of the cross-head for adjustably holding the rods of the tuckers,cam projections upon the rods of the tuckers and adjustable pins acting thereon and secured to the frame of the machine, a guide for the cross-head, a rocker-arm and means for impartingan up-and-down movement thereto for periodically moving the tuckers and causing them to perform theiroperations, substantially as set forth.
16. In a package wrapping machine, the combination with a pair of tuckers l 3 and arms to which the same are connected, of a crosshead 42, means at the ends of the cross-head for securely holding the rods of the tuckers, cam projections upon the rods of the tuckers and adjustable pins acting thereon and secured to the frame of the machine, a tube connected to the cross-head and a tube secured in a fixed part of the machine and upon which the crosshead tube slides, a slotted frame connected to the cross-head, a rocker-arm pivoted to a part of the machine and a cam acting upon the roller with the free end of the rocker-arm in the said cross-head to impart a vertical movement to the rocker-arm, the cross-head and the tuckers, substantially as set forth.
17. In a package-wrapping machine and in combination, pairs of end side-folders at either side of the machine,rods connected therewith, parallel shafts in bearings in the base of the machine and Vthrough which the rods of the end side-folders pass, toggle-bars connecting the said shafts upon one side of the machine, an arm connected with one shaft and carrying a roller at its free end, and a cam having a slot receiving the said roller, and a means' for imparting motion thereto wherebjT the said pairs of end side-folders are operated simul' taneously upon opposite sides of the machine roller at its free end and a cam having a slot receiving the said roller and a means for imparting motion thereto whereby said pairsof end side-folders are operated simultaneously upon opposite sides of the machine to fold theV paper at the ends from the sides, and means for adjustably connecting the rods carrying the end side-folders to the parallel shafts for regulating their vertical position with reference to the other parts of the machine, substantially as set forth.

In a package-wrapping machine, the combination with a vertically-movable platform, a slide-block and top-folder connected therewith, of an arm of suitable form connected to the rod of the slide-block, means for moving the slide-block in one direction with the operations of 'wrapping the article, and the cam and roller on the cam for acting upon the lower end of said arm and moving the slide-block in the opposite direction, substantially as 'set forth.
20. In a package-wrappingmachine, the combination with a vertically-movable platform, a slide-block and top-folder connected therewith, o f an arm of suitable form connected toA the rod of the slide-block, means for moving the slide-block in one direction with the operations of wrapping the article and a cam and roller on the cam for acting upon the lower end of said arm and moving the slide-block in the opposite direction, an. arm g pivoted to the machine and having a bent free end adapted to come in contact with the aforesaid arm on the rod of the slideblock, and devices connected to and acting between the said arm and the power devices of the machine for releasing the said power devices when the machine is not wrapping goods, substantially as set forth.
21. In a package-wrapping machine, the combination with the main shaft, a camshaft, a gear upon the main shaft anda loose gear upon the cam-shaft, of a cam connected to the loose gear, a spring-actuated arm g pivoted to the frame of the machine and having a bent lower end, a collar secured to the cam-shaft, a dog upon the collar adapted to engage a tooth in a recess of the said cam `and devices connected respectively with the collar and with the lower end of said pivoted arm g for effecting the prescribed movements of the parts, substantially as set forth.
22. In a package-wrapping machine, the combination with the main shaft, a camshaft, a gear upon the main shaft and a loose gear upon the cam-shaft, of acam connected IOO IIO
io the loose gear, a spring-actuated armg pivoted to the frame of the machine and having a bent lower end, a collar having two adjacent peripheral portions of varyingoutline, projections on the respective peripheries, a dog-spring actuated and pivoted to the said collar and forming a portion of one periphery, projections upon the lower bent end of the said arm g, and means for" actuating the arm g whereby in one position the dog is pressed toward and kept within the peripheral limits of the collar and the projections of the collar and the arm engage, and in the other position the dog is free to move out and engage the tooth of the cam so that the revolving cam through the dog eects the movements of the machine in their progressive order, substantially as set forth.
23. In a package-wrapping machine, the combination with a chute and au arm to which the same is pivotally connected, of a cross-bar secured to the said arm, an oscillating hopper pivoted to the lower end of the chute, a device pivoted to the hopper and located between the hopper and the cross-bar and turning the oscillating hopper in one direction for delivering an article therefrom, and means -for returning the oscillating hopper to its normal position, substantially as set forth.
24. In a package-wrapping machine, the combination with a chute and an arm to which the same is pivotally connected, of a cross-bar secured to the said arm, an oscillating hopper pivoted to the lower end of the chute, a device pivoted to the hopper and located be: tween the hopper and the cross-bar and arresting the downward movement of articles in the chute during the movement of the oscillating hopper, and means for moving said device out of the path of the articles inthe chute as the hopper is 'again filled and the operations repeated,substantially as set'fo'rth.
25. In a package-wrapping machine and in combination, devices for delivering an arti cle at a time upon and near the free end of a movable strip of paper, devices for progressively moving the article and paper along, devices for folding the free end of the paper around one side, meansfor moving the article and paper downward,devices for severing the paper strip, devices for, lapping theedges of the paper over the articlefrom j opposite directions, devices for tucking down the folded parts at the ends, devices for forming thedouble end folds and other devices for.v upturning the folded ends, substantially as specified. 4
26. In a package-wrappin g machine and in combination,a stationary platform over which a continuous strip of paper is movable, devices for delivering an article at a time upon and near the free end of said strip of paper above said platform, an adjacent vertically-V movable platform, devices for moving the article and paper along upon the movable platformand means for folding the free end of the paper around one side, devices for moving the platform with the article and paper downward and devices for severing the paper strip, devices for lapping the edges of the paper over the article from opposite directions, devices for tucking down the folded parts at the ends, devices for forming the double end folds and devices for upturning the folded ends, substantially vas specified.
