ATTACHM ENT FOR STOVES.
SPECIFICATON forming part of Letters Patent No. 693,751, dated February 18, 1902.
Application tiled April 20,1901. Serial No. 56,688. (No model.)
To all whom it nto/,y concern:
Beit known that we, JOHN H. SOEHREN and CHARLES J. RoHLr, citizens of the United States, and residents of Everly, in the county of Clay and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Attachment for Stoves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in attachments for cooking-stoves, ranges, or heaters; and the object is to provide a simple device designed to be placed above a stove or the like to catch any steam, heat, or smoke that may rise from the stove and direct the saine into the smoke-pipe or into a pipe leading' into an upper room for the purpose of heating said upper room.
IVe will describe an attachment for stoves embodying our invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a device embodying our invention, showing the same in position over a stove. Fig. 2 is a section on the linea: .fr of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line y y of Fig. 2.
The invention comprises a hood l, supported on the smoke-pipe 2 above the stove 3. As here shown, the smoke-pipe 2 extends through an opening at one side of the hood, and a loop e is attached at its upper end to the hood and engages at its lower end with the front side of the smoke-pipe, and attached to this loop is another loop 5, which engages around the smoke-pipe. At the front or" the hood is a swinging door 6, and extended upward :trom the hood is a pipe 7, which leads through the floor of a room above the stove. This pipe is designed to convey heat to the upper room. The pipe 7 has a connection 8 with the pipe 2, and in this connection 8 is a damper 9, While a damper l0 is placed in the pipe 7 above said connection S, and movable in the hood at the inlet end ofthe pipe 7 is a slide-valve 1l, from which an operating-rod 12 extends outward through one side of the hood. Extended across within the hood are rods 13, upon which dish-cloths or other articles may be hung for drying, and also arranged within the hood are open-work platforms let, upon which fruits, dishes, or other articles may be placed for drying or heating.
In operation when the heat arising from the stove is utilized for heating a room in which the stove is placed the door G is to be moved to its open position, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. l, and the valve 1l closed. Vhen it is desired to direct the heat, steam, dac., into the smoke-pipe 2 and thence into the chimney, the valve l0 is to be closed and the valves 9 and 1l opened. Then it is desired to direct the heat upward through the pipe 7, the valve 9 is to be closed and the valves 10 and 11 opened.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. An attachment for stoves, comprising a hood, having an opening at one side through which the smoke-pipe of a stove may pass, a loop connected to the hood, a loop engaging with t-he smoke-pipe and with Which the firstnamed loop connects, a pipe connection between the hood and the smoke-pipe, a valve in the upper portion of the hood, and a door at the front of the hood, substantially as specified. Y
2. An attachment for stoves, comprising a hood, having an opening at one side through which the smoke-pipe of a stove may pass, a loop attached at its upper end to the hood and engaging at its lower end with the front side of the smoke-pipe, a loop attached to the iirst-mentioned loop and engaging around the stovepipe, a pipe extending upward from the hood, a pipe connection between the latter pipe and the smoke-pipe, a valve in said pipe connection, a valve in the upwardly-extending pipe above said connection, and a valve below said connection, substantially as speci-A fied.
3. An attachment for stoves, comprising a hood having a door at its front, a loop connected to the rear portion of the hood, and engaging the smoke-pipe of a stove, a second loop attached to the first-mentioned loop and engaging the smoke-pipe, and a pipe leading from saidhood, substantially as speciiied.
In testimony whereof We have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN H. SOEI-IREN. CHARLES J. ROHLF.
