BOX- FASTEN ER.
SEEClFlATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 693,490, dated February 18,- i902;
Application filed June 8, 1901. Serial No. 63,701. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ARTHUR C. BnnNcxLE and WALTER A. ANGER, citizens of the United States, and residents of Milwaukee, in -the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Fastening Devices; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Our invention has especial reference to fastenings designed for boxes containing bottled goods, though not necessarily confined thereto and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully set forth hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the said drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse vertical sectional view through a box equipped with our said invention, taken on the line l l of Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view through such box, taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. l
Referring tothe drawings, A represents th box, and B the cover thereof, hinged, as shown at b, to the top of the rear wall of the box and designed to come ush with the vertical walls of the said box. The front wall of the box is formed with an opening or hand-hole C therein of sufficient size to admit the passage therethrough of ones fingers.
D is a catch consisting, preferably, of a' strip of sheet metal having its upper end'bent at a right angle and secured, as by nails or screws c c, to the under side of the coyer B, adjacent to the front edge thereof, and the lower edge of said catch D being forwardly curved, as shown at d.. The said catch is further formed with a slot e and a holef beneath said slot. y
E is a dat spring, formed of a strip of sheet metal, whose lower end is secured to the inner side of the front wall of the box, as by nails or screws g g, the upper end of said springE terminating in a downwardly and forwardly bent latch F for engagement with the lower wall of the slot e in the catch Dwhen the cover B is closed, the said spring E having a hole h therethrough just beneath the latch F, which hole is in line with the holef lof the goods through the opening C, and similarly when the box is closed the seal can be adjusted through said opening,'and after the seal is removed the latch and catch will operate as before, one great advantage lying in the fact that the fastening is always within the box itself, and to unlatch the device it is only necessary to push a finger through the opening C against the latch-,spring E, while the latching of the device is automatic on the closing of the cover B, as the curved lower end d of the catch D will slide down past the inclined front edge of the latch F and push it back until the saidedge of the latch reaches the slot e in the catch, when the latch-spring 'E will force the latch F forward through said slot to the position shown in Fig. 1, resting Von the lower wall of said slot, and by reason of the inclination of the latch F will thus hold the parts in engagement, with the cover B tightly in place and free from loose play or rattling, no matter what the position yof the box may be at any time, at alltimes when the box is closed. y
When a box fitted with our device has been filled, closed, and sealed, with the seal pushed back within thev box, as described, a paper seal H is preferably pasted on the outsideof the front Wall of the box, covering and concealing the opening C, this paper seal containing anysuitable inscription, and thus affordin g an additional protection against tarnpering with the' boxor its contents.'
Our device is extremely simple and very 95 economical in manufacture and can be readily applied to existing boxes as well as to new ones, and boxes fitted with our fasteningdevice may be packed very closely together, as
`the said fasteners and seals are always withroo in the boxes, which is an additionalmeasure of convenience and safety in their storage or transport-ation.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is- Y The combination With a box, provided with a cover, and a hand-hole in its front wall; of an interior catch secured to and depending from said cover back of said hand-hole, and provided with a slot therethrough, and a hole beneath said slot; an upwardly and rearwardly extending spring, secured at its lower end to the inner side of said front wall of the box and having a forwardly-projecting bent upper end for engagementwith the slot in the catch, and a hole beneath said upper end in line with the lower hole in the said catch; and a wire seal passed through the registering holes in the catch and latch-spring, the latch, catch and seal being all within the box, but accessible by hand through the hand-hole in the front wall of the latter.
In testimony that We claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Tisconsin, in the presence of two Witnesses.
