UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HANNAH R. IJOHNSON, OF BRADDOCK, NORTH DAKOTA.
CLOTH ES-LINE AND DE'TACHABLE SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 693,401, dated February 18, 1902, Application iiled October 5, 1901i Serial No. 77,655. (No model.)
To tZZ whom it may concern).-
Be it known that I, HANNAH R. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Braddock, in the county of Emmons and State of NorthDakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Lines and Detachable Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v
My invention has for its object to provide a simple and eflicient device whereby clothes may be detachably secured to a line without being directly applied thereto, all as hereinafter more clearly set forth; and to the above end the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described, and defined in the claims.
It is a well-known fact that in the wintertime when clothes are hung on a line and secured by pins in the ordinary way they become frozen to the line, so that they are removed with difficulty and are very frequently torn. Furthermore, when applied directly to the line the clothes are subjected to great wear under the flapping action of the wind, which keeps the clothes rubbing the said line. Also it is evident that in very cold weather both the operations of hanging the clothes out and removing the same from the line are disagreeable jobs which itis 'desirable to accomplish as rapidly as possible.
In accordance with my invention I provide in connection with a line of suitable construction a plurality of detachable clothes-supporting brackets. These clothes-supporting brackets are provided with hooks for detachably securing them to the line and with transversely-extended sections to which, by means of ordinary clothes-pins, the clothes may be secured within doors and afterward secured to the line by the said devices.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout both views.
Figure l is an elevation showing several pieces of clothes or apparel suspended from a line by devices constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of certain of the parts shown in Fig. l.
My improved su pporting-brackets are pref:
erably constructed as shown in the drawings, being made from a single piece of wire bent to form hooks 7 and pronged lower ends 8, connected by transverse portions 9. The clothes are adapted to be folded over the transverse portions 9 and to be secured thereto by the The transverse bar portion 9 clothes-pins '6. is connected at its ends to the lower ends of the prongs 8 by depending loop-sections 10, into which the upper but downward-turned edges of the clothes may be turned when the devices are applied thereto, as shown in lthe drawings. The hooks 7 adapt the 'supporting-brackets to be quickly and detachably secured to the eyes or loops 4 of the line 3.
With these supporting-brackets the clothes may be quickly removed from the line, and the brackets themselves may he removed from the clothes at leisure and at any time after the clothes have been carried into the house and thawed out. It is also evident that these supporting-brackets may be secured to the clothes before they are removed from the house, in which case they may, by means of the said brackets, be quickly strung upon the line. These supporting-brackets with hooked ends are capable of use in connection with any kind of a line; butthe clothes are more satisfactorily held in place when the said brackets are' used in connection with a line such as described, which is provided at intervals with eyes or loops. If in the summertime the detachable brackets are not deemed necessary, the line 3 may be used in the ordinary manner, inasmuch as the loops or eye's 4E will not prevent the'application of ordinary clothes-pins. The supporting-brackets themselves are also capable of considerable modiication Within the scope of 1ny invention. p What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United' States, is as follows: 1; A detachable `clothes -support formed loo portion to which the clothes are adapted to 'xo be pinned, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HANNAH R. JOHNSON.
