Be it known that I, l'lInAM DILLAWAY, of Sandwich, in the county of Barnstable, and State of Massachu setts, have invented an Improvement in Presses for Forming Glass-Ware; and I do hereby declare that the following, taken in connection with the drawings which accompany and form part of this specification, is a description of my invention sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to practise it.
The invention relates particularly to the construction or arrangement of mechanism of presses for forming glass-ware in moulds, and the improvement consists in the disposition of a pair of segment-gears in relation to each other, and to gear-pinions, into which they alternately mesh, and to the actuating shaft and lever, and to the plunger and its connections, the segment-gears being placed, one on the shaft which carries the working handle or lever, and the other on the shaft, to .angarm or crank'upon which the plunger is connected, each segment being so disposed that the teeth of one or the other always mesh into the teeth of a smaller gear upon the opposite shaft, the arrangement being such that during the first part of the downward movement of the plunger, while its work is light, (or before it reaches the n1ould,) the segment on the driving-shaft meshes into the gear or pinion on the plunger-shaft, and ofcourse effects a correspondingly rapid descent of the plunger, while, as the plunger reaches the mould, and its descent is resisted by the contents thereof, the driving-segment runs out of connection with its pinion, and the pinion on the driving-shaft simultaneouslyT runs into connection with the segment ou the plunger-shaft, the same power thereby effecting the descent of the plunger, but at a slower speed, the segment-gears upon thc plunger-shaft being made adjustable with reference to the position of the plunger, so that the change from quick speed and light pressure to slow speed, at a peint where the resistance increases, may be regulated as circumstances may render desirable.
The invention also consists in the peculiar method of effecting the descent of the plunger, which comes down upon thc top of the mould in such manner that after the follower is carried down against the mould it is held rigidly in position, or is kept fromA springing upwards, while the pressure upon the glass in the mould continues or is being effected.

The upper cross-head is connected to arms 1c, projecting from 4the ends of a shaft, Z, by connecting-rods m. This shaft bears a segment-gear, 1n, (concentric with the axis of the shaft,) and a pinion, o, said gear and pinion being respectively opposite and alternately meshing into a corresponding gear, p, and a pinion, q, on a driving-shaft, r, which latter shaft is actuated by a long handlcver, s'. When the plunger is at its highest position, the teeth of, the driving-shaft segment are in connection with the teeth of the plunger-shaft pinion, as seen at A. If thc lever is now drawn down, the segment-teeth work upon the pinion-teeth of the plunger-shaft, the difference in the radii of the two gears causing the quick descent of the plunger during the-first part of' its downward movement. As the last tooth of the drivingsegment leaves thc pinion, the first tooth of the plunger-shaf`t segment comes into connection with the drivingshaft pinion, the segment being then driven by thc pinion, and effecting the completion of the descent of the plunger with the full power exerted by the short arm of the lever (namely, the radius of the driving-pinion) upon the segment.
New, in order to effect this change from driving-segment to drivingpinion, at dierent points in the course of descent of the piston or plunger as may be desirable, according to the size of the mould or the degree of pressure necessary to be exerted, I make the plunger-shaft segment adjustable in position upon the shaft, and relatively to the arms 7c, so that the change from the drivingsegmcnt operating the pinion to the driving-pinion operating the segment may be made to occur at any position of the arms 7c within their limit of motion. For this purpose I make the plunger-shaft pinion and segment (which are integral) movable upon the shaft, and upon or near the face of the pinion I make clnteh-tceth t, clutching into teeth u on the shaft. The follower is shown ut a, fixed on the under surface of a cross-head or plate, l1". This plate or the follower is generally made to move downward with the plunger until it reaches the mould, and to be cushioned against springs, to allow the plunger to descend after the follower strikes the mould. This is objectionable, in that under a great pressure from the glass lin the nould, the follower yields, (by compressiuinr the spriugs,) and leaves the pressed article imperfect in shape. To remedy this, I separate the follower from the plunger, and impart its movement directly from the shaft I, as follows: At each end of the shaft is a cam or cum-groove, c", in which a. pin, d', plays, this pin projecting from the foot of a vertical rod, c', the follower-plate being mounted on thc upper ends ofthe two rods e. Each cam-groove is inclined towards its shaft at one cud, and is concentric with the shaft at the opposite end. As the shaft turns, the irregular part of the cam draws down the rods and follower until the follower closes over the top of the mould. The concentric parts of the cams then slide over the cam-pins, and the rods and follower are thereby held in stationary position. 'lo regulate the stop of the follower, the rods have screw-threads f upon their upper ends, upon which nuts'g work, and the position of the Vfollower-plate is determined and adjusted by these screws and their nuts, as will be readily understood `I claim the combination of the driving-segment gear and pinion, with the respective pinion and segmentgear with which each alternately connects, when arranged to operate to produce the descent of the plunger or piston, substantially as shown and described. y
I also claim combining the follower with mechanism which not only effects its descent, but holds it stationyary upon the mould during the continued descent of' the plunger, substantially as described.
