CURTAIN.
SPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 693,107, dated February 1 1, 1902.
Application tiled October 19, 1900. Serial No. 33,545. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD S. BURRoWs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtains, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in curtains, the main purpose of which is to provide a flexible curtain which will roll up upon the ordinary roller and which also has means for guiding its edges, so as to prevent them from being pulled away from the casing. Among other advantages gained by my improvements is the arrangement of the curtain so that it can be swung outward bodily to act as an awning of adjustable extent from the point of attachment.
To such end the invention consists in certain novel improvements, the nature of which will be described, and the essential features defined in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of a window-frame, showin g a complete curtain. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section in line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a broken View of one corner of the curtain, having portions removed to showthe interior thereof. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section in line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perspective of a complete window, showing certain additional improvements. Fig. 6 is a vertical transverse section in line 6 6 of Fig. 5, and Fig. 7 is a horizontal section in line 7 7 of Fig. 6.
Referring t0 the drawings, A is an ordinary window-casing; a a', the sideframes; d2, the transom; a3, the sill. In the upper portion of the frame is mounted an ordinary springroller B, over which runs the curtain C. The latter may be ofrany desired material and is stitfened by a cross-piece c at the bottom. ItV has a flexible binding c', preferably of spring metal, along each edge, provided with elongated perforations a; along its outer margin, and in the perforations is run a springcoil D. The longer diameter of the perforationsis arranged longitudinally of the curtain and' allows the coils of the spring to accommodate themselves to each other as they run together around the roller. To the inner surfaces of the side frames are fastened slotted tubular guides E, secured to the side frame in the construction'shown in Fig. 2 by means of ears e and having vertical slots e., through which the binding of the curtain runs. The coil-spring is guided in the interior of the tubular guides and prevents the withdrawal of the edge of the curtain therefrom. In rolling the curtain up upon the roller the coils of the spring run between each other, so that in winding upon the roller the size of the roll is materially reduced.
Figs. 5, 6, and 'Ishow an additional improvement in which the tubular guides are secured in the inner faces of two longitudinal members of a swinging frame F, pivoted at ff and provided with a cross-rod f2 at the bottom, adapted to engage with a catch f3 on the sill, also with hooks f4, adapted to engage with eyes f5 to hold the curtain-frame out from the window-frame, making the device serve as an awning, the outward extent of which may be adjusted by running up the curtain or pulling it down from the roller. The hooks f4 are pivoted in eyes secured to the frame F near its lower end, and springcatches G, secured to the curtain-frame, eugage the hooks when the latter are not in use to hold them in the position seen in Fig. 6.
The invention is independent of the specific construction described and is not limited thereto.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination with a curtain having a perforated binding along its edges, of a coiled spring run into the perforations, a roller upon which the curtain is mounted and suitablysupported slotted tubular guides, in which the coiled spring runs as the curtain is raised or lowered; substantially as described.
2. The combination with a curtain-roller and a curtain having a perforated ilexible metallic binding along the edge thereof, a coiled spring run in the perforations and slotted tubular guides adapted to receive and guide the coiled spring; substantially as described.
3. The combination with a curtain-roller, of a curtain running thereon provided along IOO its edges with a binding having a series of l hand, at Chicago, in the county of Cook and elongated perforations arranged lengthwise State of Illinois, this 9th dayof October, A. D.
longitudinally of the curtain, a coiled spring 1900.
run into said perforations along said edges, I LEONARD S. BURROWS. and suitable tubular guides for said spx-ing; Witnesses:
substantially as described. I CEAS. O. SHERVEY,
' In witness whereof I have hereunto set my l S. BLISS.
