UNITED STAT-Es PATENT OFFICE.
THERON R. PALMER, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
BILLIARo-TABLE CUSHION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 692,899, dated February 11, 1902. 4
Application filed April 23, 1901. Serial No. 57,084. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, THERON R. PALMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Billiard-Table Cushions; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to Which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming partof this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in billiard-cushions, and particularly to the type thereof constructed of a molded -strip of rubber or other suitable resilient material so shaped and arranged upon a table as to present to the ball striking such cushion a face which recedes downward from the point at which the ball contacts therewith, which point is slightly above the center of the ball contacting with it; and the object of imy invention is to mold into and combine With the cushion-strip a new and novel means for increasing the resiliency of the cushion without materially affecting the direction of the angle of deflection'of a ball played against the cushion and Without impairing the durability of the cushion; and it consists, substantially, in molding into the cushion-strip a reinforcestrip of diagonally-braided materiahas is hereinafter set forth and described,and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of a portion of abilliard -table, cushion-rail, and cushion embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view, partially in section, of asection of a cushion-rail and cushion. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of a modified construction of the cushion. Fig. 4c is a transverse section of another modiiied construction of the same.
In Fig. l of the drawings, A is a table-top, B the side frame, and C the cushion-rail, of a billiard-table of the usual construction. The cushion D is made of a strip of rubber compound or other suitable resilient substance, in the upper portion of which is embeddeda strip of diagonal braid E, preferably made flat in cross-section and of wire or other suitable material. In the face portion of the cushion-strip there is,preferabl y embedded a strip or ribbon of fabric F, and on the back .maximum degree of resiliency therein and also preserves the eliiciency of the cushion much longer than is possible'as billiard-table cushions have heretofore been made. The use of the strip of fabric F and the strip of fabric F are not novel in this construction, as they perform the same functions as they have done heretofore in the cushion-strips of billiard-table cushions.
In Fig. 3 I show a modified construction of my improved billiard-table cushion in that I dispense with the strip of fabric F in the face of the cushion D. In otherrespects itis constructed thev same as shown in Fig. l and hereinbefore described.
In Fig. 4 I show another modified construction, in Which a braid E is ni'oldedinto the face of the cushion D2 instead of in the upper part thereof, as shown in Figs. l and 3. I, however, prefer the construction shown in Fig. l or Fig. 3 to that shown Ain Fig. 4 in the practice of my invention.
Having thus described my invention so as to enable others to construct and usevthe same,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a billiard-table cushion, the combination of a lcushion-strip of a suitable resilient substance-with a longitudinal strip of diagonally-Woven braid molded into the body thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
l 2. In a billiard-table cushion, the combination of a cushion-strip of vulcanized rubber or .other suitable resilient substance, with a longitudinal strip of flat diagonally-Woven braid in the upper part thereof,'substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a billiard-table cushion, the combina- IOO Lion of a cushion-strip of vulcanized rubber) In testimony whereof I affix my signature or other suitable reslent ubstance, with@v in presence of two witnesses longitudinal strip o flat iagonally-Woven d braid in the upper part thereof, and yafstrip THERON R' PALMER' of fabric in the face thereof, both of which W'itnesses;
are molded into the body of the cushion, sub- RALPH A. STURGEON,
stnntiallyas and for the purpose set forth. M. E. DAVIS.
