UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH BREMNER, OF MILTON, NEV ZEALAND.
DOOR-JAIVIB, GATE-POST,`OR THE LIKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent Nl`692,607,` dated February 4, 1902.
v Application filed October 25, 1901. Serial No. 80,006. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that LJosEPH BREMNER, housefurnisher, a British subject, and a resident of Milton, in the provincial district of Otago, in the Colony of New Zealand, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door-Jambs, Gate-Posts, or the Like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description ofthe same.'
This invention relates to door-jambs, gateposts, and the like. It has for its objects the facilitating of the exit and entrance of a large number ofpersons or animals crowding through a door or gateway with less liability to injury than by ordinary means. I carry these objects into effect by using cylindrical revoluble door-jambs or gate-posts and folding doors or gates hinged thereto by straps attached to the tops and bottoms of the doors or gates and pivoted at the other end on pintles or center pins attached by a strap to or borne by a palm fixed in the tops and bot-v toms of the revoluble door-jambs or gateposts, so that the doors or gates can open both ways and give a clear passage in either direction.
Door-jambs and gate-posts in ordinary use Yare iiXed, and when a crush of persons or animals takes place those whohave to passin contact with these Iixed door-jambs and gateposts are liable to injury. My revoluble door-jambs or gate-posts when pressed against by a crush of persons or animals would revolve and ease out those persons coming in contact with them. I also use a catch to hold the doors or gates together that is easily set free, so that the folding doors or double gates may be readily thrown open.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation, showing my invention with the doors or gates closed. Fig. 2 is a like view with the doors or gates open. Fig. 3 is a plan of saine. Y i
In the drawings the same numbers indicate the saine or similar parts respectively.
1 l are the doors or gates.
2 2 are the straps,`attached'by screws or nailsto the doors or gates 1 1 and hinging on the pintles or center pins 3 3, attached to the revoluble jarnbs or posts 4 4 by the straps 5 5 and resting on shoulders in such pintles or center pins, as shown. The pintles or center pins 3 3 revolve with the jambs or posts in sockets in the lintle and sill, respectively, as illustrated.
6 6 are the walls or fences on each side of the door or gateway.
7 is a falling bar movable on a pivot at one end and free to be placed beneath the keepers S 8, being retainedthere by the spring 9 pressing it against the keepers 8 8.
In operation, when a crowd of persons or animals are pressing against the folding doors or gates the falling bar 7 may be readily knocked out, whereupon the folding doors or gates open and leave a clear passage for the crowd. Those persons or animals at the side of the passage are pressed against the jambs or posts 4 4 and are also shoved onward from behind, and thereupon these jambs or posts revolve and ease the passage of such persons or' animals through the doorway or gateway.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as newfand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a doorway or the like, of rotatable posts or jambs therefor, sub stantially as described.
2. In combination, a rotatable post orjamb and a door or the like hinged thereto, substantially as described.
3. In combination, a rotatable cylindrical post or jamb, axial extensions therefrom, and a door pivotally connected with said axial eX-- tensions, substantially as described.
lindrical posts or jambs, a pair of doors or the like pivotally supported and means for securing said doors against swinging, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH BREMNER.
Witnesses:
