KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS:
That I, W'. C. JOHAN, of West Thompson, in the county of Windham, und State of Connecticut, here invented certe-in new und useful improvements in Machines for Reducing Roller and other Leather to n Uniform Thickness; and I do hereby declare that lthe following is n full, elettr, und exact description of the sinne, reference heingjr hud to the accompanying drawing, forming u, part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents n top or plnn view of my improved machine, nud
Figure 2 represents n section on line A Ttig. l,
To enable those skilled in the nrt to which my invention belongs to multe und use the same, I will proceed r to describe it more in detail. i
In the drawings, the part marked A represents the nir-.in frame, upon the tep of which are supported, in L suitable hearings,.thc reeeivingnolls i3 E und thc delivering-rolls C C, as fully indicated inthe drawings. Between the receiving und delivering-rolls is'supported the reducing-wheel or cylinder' l), which, in this instance, is mudo with spiral knives a'. t upon its outer surface. The knives may be upplied in spiral form, or they muy be put on parallel to each other, und any desired number may be used. E E are two friction or supporting` rolls, to support the material during the operation. F is u hed to support the material under the reducing-wheel. v .The bed F islitted to worl: up und down ut cach end in suitable grooves or recesses 5, in the side of the frame. Bed F con be adjusted up or down by menus of screws c, which pass through euri-pieces cZ, fastened to sides of frame A. Screws c muy have pulleys on their lower ends, nhd be connected by belts, so that when one is turned the 'other will. be turned also, and thus bot-h ends of bed F be raised and lovered nt the sume time. In lien of belts theyT muy be provided with gears to be operated by gears upon n long independent shaft properlvv arranged and combined with the ir-ume of the machine. In this instance the wheel for reducing the leather is provided with spiral knives, but the surface of the wheel or roll muy he covered with sund, emery, or other hard substance, the seme boing applied by any suitable cement o1' glue. in some enses e tlutcd cylinder muy be employed, und in others oord-clothinfor muy benscd to cover the suifuce of the rcduGing-cylinder. The cylinder muy he mede of motti-l und cast hollow, suitable heads being inserted in the ends of the cylinder. The receiving and l deliverlngrolls muy be provided with adjust-able sp1ing-ben.1'ings,so that n 2greater or less pressure cnn be brought to be?` upon the materie-l :ts it posses through them.
In this machine G is the driving-shaft, .from which power is communicntcd to the reducing-cylinder D by means of belt H, und to the shaft I by menus of belt J, which runs 'upon pulley. From thecone-pullej K, upon shaft L, f1. belt. runs to the concpullcyli, upon shaft L', und u belt, M, runs from e pulley on the outer end of shaft L to n pulley on the end of the shaft of the bottom receiving-roll, from which power is communicated to the bottom deliveringroll by menus of belt N, fully indicated in the drawings. It will be seen that the speed of' the receiving und dcliveringnolls een be regulated by menus et' the cone-pulleys K and L. The deliveringnolls C C ure to bc so runde or errnnged that they will stretch the material Somewhat. This can be oil'ceted by running them fester thun the receiving-rolls, or by making them larger. Cone-pulleys muy be fastened to the shnt'ts of the bottom rolls, so that belt N cnn be adjusted to run the receiving-rolls fester or slower, und thus stretch the material more or less. iA. The opcrntien is as follows: Motion beiner eommuniclited to the rollsend rcdncin'gcylinder in any proper manner, the materiel e is passed or fed through under the cylinder l) und reduced to the desired thickness. By moving the heil l" up or down the materiel cnn be vnr in thickness. The value of my invention will be highly appreciated l those engaged in sf'nning cotton yarn, since by E my improvements the leather from which the coverings for the top rolls nrc made is reduced to n uniform thiol;-
' ness, and which contributes in n great ine-usure to the production of perfect and uniform threads. The leather lfy be Cnt up into strips, und the strips fnstened together, so that long piece can be run through the machine rcndily, und if preferred, the two ends of the piece cnn be instcncfl together so that the materiel can be run through the machine several times ,in the form of u belt, so that the reduction will be gradual. Tn the latter Y ense c proper frame should he arranged to support the materiel above the reducingcylinder as it returned to i nnss through between the receiving-rolls, und which frame muy be mede in any desirable manner. One goed L, wny would be te arrange n series of friction-rolls nbove the reducing-cyiinder, the ends of the rolls being supported in proper bearings upon frame A. The bell F may be recessed or slotted out longitudinally in the centre, vand a. friction-roll arranged in said recess, to support the leather or material while it is being reduced, and in light work it will be well to use the friction-roll.
Having described andshown one goed way in which 'my invention may be carried out, what I claim asncw, and desire to secure hy Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, in a. machine for reducing calf-skins, sheep-skins, and lamb-skins to a uniform thickness, of the reducing-cylinder D, receiving and deliveringrolls B B C C, and adjustable bed F, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A machine for stretching and reducing leather to a uniform thickness, the parts. of which are constructed and arranged for joint operation, as and for the purposes 'licfcin set `forth.
