UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WARD B. SNYDER, OF FRENEAU, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T HARVEY T. ANDREWS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HANDLE FOR DRIVING-REINS, 840.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 692,168, dated January 28, 1902. I
Application filed MarohlZ, 190l- SerialNo- 50,809- (No model.) i
To ail whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WARD B. SNYDER, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Freneau, county of Monmouth, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles for Driving- Reins and other Objects or Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in handles for driving-reins and other objects or devices; and it consists of contrivances for the application of burner apparatus forheating them in cold Weather for warming the hands of the user, as hereinafter described, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved handle with attachments for using it as a driving-rein holder, the reins not being connected. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail in side elevation with a rein connected as in the use of the handle for driving. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation of the handle on line as :r, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the carbon-holder detached from the shell of the handle. Fig. 6 is a plan and side view of the cap to the upper end of the handle. Fig. 7 is a plan and side view of the upper portion of the handle. Fig. 8 is a plan and side view of the lower end portion of the burner. Fig. 9 is a side elevation of a charge of fuel for the burner.
A represents the cylindrical shell of the handle, which is of suitable length and size to be grasped in the hand, so as to be conveniently and firmly held for driving or carrying purposes. 7
1) represents a thin rein-attaching plate projecting laterally from one side of the handle at the middle or thereabout, with its flatwise plane at right angles to the lengthwise direction of the handle, so that it will extend between two of the fingers of the hand in which the handle is grasped without discomfort to the hand, said plate I) being jointed to the handle-shell,as at 0. At the extremity of this attaching-plate is an automatic rein-clamp, which, together with the said rein-attaching plate, is substantially the same as described and claimed in another application filed at the same time with this and need not therefore be further described in this case.
, For the burner to warm the handle in cold weather, and-thereby keep the hand warm, I employ a hollow cylinder (1, of finely perforated or reticulated material, of smaller diameter than the diameter of the shell A, with a top flange e and a base-cap'f, adapted to center the burner-shell in the handle-shell with an annular air-space g between them, to which air is admitted freely through perforations it in the bottom of the base-cap, so as to flow upward to the level of the fire within the burner and enter thereat through the perforations of the burner shell for supporting combustion, said burner-shell being filled to the top or thereabout with a charge'of fuel in any approved way for slow combustion, as a cylinder t', of compressed carbon, or a paper or other bag packed with pulverized carbon, and the upper end of the shell A is closed with a perforated top j, over which is a perforated cap 70, fitted to turn and open and close the escape-passages for the products of combustion to regulate the same.
The top of the case A has a head-flange Z,
and the cap 7c is flanged under the head to be secured in position and to form a suitable shape for being conveniently gripped to turn the cap for regulating the draft.
The base-cap f has a central stamped boss on, which enters the lower end of the burnershell and is brazed or otherwise secured therein for connecting them together and for centering the burner-shell in the handle-shell. Said cap also has a bead n for affording convenient grip to serve as a handle to the burner shell, which, being inserted in thehandleshell, is secured by the grip of the close-fitting flange of the base-cap, within which the end of thehandle-shell is inserted. Other means of securing the handle-shell in the flange of the base-cap may be employed, if desired, as the well-known bayonet-fastening.
What I claim as my invention is In ahand-warminghandle, the combination of the reticulated hollow cylinder adapted in its transverse dimension to be grasped between the thumb and fingers of a human hand, and being longer than its transverse the exterior flange receiving the other end of the handle-shell, the bottom of said cap being perforated coincidently with said air-space.
Signed by me at New York city this 8th day of March, 1901.
VVARD B. SNYDER.
