SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 691,996, dated January 28, 1902.
Application filed June 12, 1901.

Be it known that I, FRANK WEIDENEELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Eyeglass-Frame, of which the following is a speciiication.
rlhis invention relates to eyeglass-frames; and the 'object of the same is to provide simple and effective means for locking the studscrews in such positive manner that they will not work loose, thereby overcoming material annoyance to wearers of eyeglasses and the inconvenience arising from loose joints.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure lis an elevation of a portion of an eyeglass, showing the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an inside edge elevation showing the nosepiece and arm, a portion of the spring, and the stud-screw having the improved device in connection therewith. Fig.- 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 3, Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line 41. 4, Fig. 3. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail perspective views of the improved locking device and stud-screw, respectively.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
The numeral l designates the lenses; 2, the lens-holding frames, having posts 3, with means at the inner terminals thereof for supporting the ends of the spring l and the ends of the arms 5 of the nosepieces 6. The studscrews 7 are arranged in relation to the foregoing parts as usual; but between the head 8 of each and the upper end of the arm 5 of the nosepiece 6 a washer 9, of bendable material, is interposed and is primarily of circular form and has diametrically opposite portions thereof adapted to be bent over the sides of the inner terminal of the post 3. The head 8 of the screw 7, in planes at right angles to the screw-driver seat l0 therein, has opposite slots 1l extending fully through the thickness thereof, and the washer 9 has opposite lips l2 cut therefrom and bent outwardly in planes at right angles to the face thereof, the said lips Serial No. 64,301. (No model.)
being located within the body of the washer inwardly from the periphery of the latter. The washer 9 is first applied to the screw 7, and the lips-12 thereof are struck over into the slots ll of said screw, and the said screw will then be inserted in position, and after full insertion the opposite side portions of the washer will be bent over the inner terminal of the post to thereby hold the'screw against turning or loosening. In removing the screw the washer is again straightened by releasing the bent portions thereof from the post-terminal, when the said screw will be free to be Withdrawn.
This improved construction is particularly adapted for use with the delicate parts comprised in an eyeglass complement; but it will be understood that it may be used in connection withother screws. The washer need not be necessarily circular, and the dimensions.

The combination with the post of an eyeglass and the nosepiece-arrn and spring-terminal intimately connected thereto, of a studscrew having diametrically-opposed slots in the head thereof, and a washer interposed between the head of the screw and terminal of the post and provided with oppositely disposed outstanding lips which engage the said slots, said lips being located within the body of the washer inwardly from the periphery of the latter.
2. The combination with the post of an eyeglass and the nosepiece-arm and spring-terminal intimately connected thereto, of a studscrew having diametrically-opposed slots in the head thereof, and a washer interposed between the head of the screw and the terminal of the post and provided with projecting portions which engage the said slots, the opposite portions of the washer being bent over the sides of the post. v y
