Description

. Patented Ian. 2|, I902. w. H. LANDOB.
W R E N G H (Application filed. Nov. 14, 1900.)
(N0 Model.)
UNITED STATES PAT NT OFFICE.
WILLIAM II. LANDOR, OF PALMYRA, WISCONSIN.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 691,552, dated January 21 1902.
Application filed November 14, 1900. fierial No. 36,444. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM II. LANDOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Palmyra, county of'Jefferson, and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an adjustable wrench of neat appearance and simple in construction with the fewest parts possible; and my invention pertains more especially to the construction of the adjustable jaw, which is of such shape that it can be socured around the shank of the wrench by bending, whereby it becomes unnecessary, as heretofore, when assembling the parts of the wrench to pass the adjustable jaw over the end of the shank, whereby I am enabled to cast the shank, the ratchet thereon, the stationary jaw, and the handle in a single piece of metal preparatory to attaching the adjustable jaw thereto, said adjustable jaw being thereafter secured in place by bending the same around the shank between the handle and the stationary jaw.
The construction of my invention is explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan view of the wrench. Fig. 2 is a front view. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the sliding jaw of the wrench, drawn on lines 3 y of Fig. 1. Like parts are identified by the same reference-letters throughout the several views. By my improved form of wrench the handle A, shank W, ratchet T, and stationary jaw S are all castintegral, whereby the construction of such parts is greatly simplified and facilitated. The movab,le jaw U is also cast in a single piece. To provide for attaching the jaw U to the handle, it is cast in the angular form indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 5, with its respective side walls V V diverging from each other, as indicated in said Fig.5. It is then placed around the shank W, which is of less thickness than the handle, when the two diverging walls are forced together and brought in line with the surfaces of said shank parallel to each other. This being done, the
pawl A is inserted between said walls V, when such parts are secured together by the rivet B. The said pawl A is so shaped that when in place it has a vertical bearing-surface flush or parallel with the bearing-s11 rface of the slidable jaw U, whereby when the jaws of the wrench are placed upon a nut or brought in contact with other surfaces to be held by the wrench said bearing-surface of the pawl will also bear against such nut or other surface, whereby its lower end is prevented from becoming accidentally disengaged from. the ratchet.
, Referring to Fig. 1, the lower end of the pawl A is adapted to engage in the notches G of the ratchet T, whereby the jaw U is locked at any desired point of adjustment upon the shank W. The pawl A is held in place against the ratchet by the plate-spring D, which spring is secured to the walls of the movable jaw U by screws or rivets E. The upper end of the pawl A is provided with a protrndin g bearing F, against which the pressure of the hand is brought to hear when desirous to throw the lower end of the pawl A out of engagement with said ratchet.
It will be obvious that the forward adjustment of the movable jaw against the nut is effected by simply pressing such jaw forward until brought in contact with the nut and that when desirous to move the jaw backward such end is accomplished by pressing slightly upon the bearing F as said jaw is drawn rear wardly.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a wrench,an operating-handle; a shank provided with a ratchet and a stationary jaw cast integrally, in combination with a malleable slidable jaw, formed V-shaped and secured in place by compressing its diverging arms together around said shank 5 means for securing said diverging arms together, when compressed around said shank; and means for supporting the pawl from said slidable jaw in contact with said ratchet, as set forth.
2. In a wrench,an operating-handle,a shank provided with a ratchet and a stationary jaw to being placed upon said shank, and secured said ratchet, all substantially as and for the in place thereon by compressing its diverging purpose specified. 1o arms together around said shank; a pivotal In testimony whereof I affix my signature pin or rivet securing said diverging arms toin the presence of two witnesses.
gether when compressed around said shank; WILLIAM II. LANDOR.
and a pawl, supported at one end by said /Vitnesses: i pivotal pin or rivet, from said slidable jaw, J AS. B. ERWIN, 4 and adapted to bear at its opposite end in LEVERETT C. WHEELER.
