UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER WQFULTON, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DEVICE FOR CREASING TROUSERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 691,460, dated January 21, 1902.
Application filed May 28, 1900.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER W. FULTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Greasing Trousers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
My invention relates to the well-known practice of providing the legs of trousers with vertical folds or crease-lines.
My invention contemplates a device for creasing trousers while the garment is being wornyand it. consists of a clamp for pinching and holding the cloth in a folded condition and of a creaser having flat-irons adapted to be heated and applied to the fold of cloth protruding from the jaws of said clamp. The clamp for thus holding the cloth in condition to permit the application of the creaser can be of any suitable form or construction. Preferably, however, the jaws of said clamp are of a length to establish a fold substantially for the full length of the trousers-leg. The irons of said creaser are arranged to oppose each other 'at opposite sides of the fold of cloth, and during the operation of creasing the trousers the clamp not only provides a guide for the creaser, but also serves as a guard for preventing the heated irons from burning the person. The nature and operation of said device will, however, hereinafter more fully appear. 4
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 illustrate a creasing-iron embodying the principles of my invention. Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 illustrate a clamp for holding the cloth. Fig. 7 illustrates the manner in which the clamp and creasing-iron are applied to a fold in the trousers-leg.
Referring to Figs. 3, 4., 5, and 6, the clamp shown comprises a pair of jaws A A, connected by U-shaped brackets a and adjustingscrews a. The said jaws are preferably of some length, and their faces are fiat and adapted to bear upon opposite sides of the cloth. The adj ustingscrews extend through the said brackets and have their ends swiveled in the jaw A. (See Figs. 5 and 6.) With this arrangement and by rotatingthe said screws the jaw A can be caused to approach or re- Serial No. 18,237. (No model.)
cede from the jaw A. With this device a fold in the trousers-leg O can be clamped and held, as shown in Figs. 4 and 7, it being observed that the edge of such fold is permitted to extend for some distance beyond the jaws. It will be understood, however, that before applying the clamp it is preferable to cover the fold with a wet cloth 0, as shown in Figs. 4 and 7. The fold thus firmly held by the clamp is now ready for further treatment for the purpose of rendering it permanent. This is accomplished by subjecting the projecting portion of the fold tothe pressure of a hot iron. A creasing-iron constructed for this special purpose may consist of a pair of fiat-irons connected for relative adjustment and arranged to oppose each other at opposite sides of the cloth. As a simple and effective arrangement the said fiat-irons B B can be mounted at the ends of a pair of levers b b, and these levers, which are pivotally connected at b, can be provided with handles 19 h The irons, thus mounted transversely at the ends of pivotally-connected levers, can be heated in any suitable manner. When heated, the creasing-iron is applied to the projecting portion of the fold, as shown in Fig. 7, and the levers are then manipulated so as to cause'the two irons to come together with more or less pressure. The creasing-iron is applied in this manner for the full length of the fold- -that is to say,the hot irons are applied to a portion of the projecting fold and then moved along to the adjacent portions, and the fold in the cloth thus treated for the full length of the trousers-leg becomes permanent. During the operation of thus creasing the trousers it will be seen that the clamp prevents the irons from burning the person and also that the clamp serves as a sort of guide for the creaser. It will be understood that after a fold in the cloth has been thus treated the clamp is then removed and applied to another portion of the garment. In this way the trousers are creased more quickly and easily than in the old way and without the necessity of removing the garment.
Obviously the form and construction of the creasing-iron can be varied Without in any Way departing from the spirit of my invention, and for this reason I do not limit my self to the construction shown and described. It will also be seen that other constructions of clamp can be employed.
What I claim as my invention is--- 1. A device for creasing trousers while the garment is.being worn, comprising a creaser having oppositely arranged fiat -irons suitably connected for relative adjustment, and a suitable clamp for pinching and holding the cloth in condition to permit the application of said creaser, the said irons being arranged to oppose each other at opposite sides of the fold of cloth protruding from said clamp, substantially as described.
2. A device for creasing trousers While the garment is being worn, comprising a creaser having fiat-irons connected for relative adjustment and adapted to be heated and ap plied to a fold in the cloth, andaclamp adapted to hold the cloth in condition to permit the application of said creaser, the jaws of said clamp being of a length to establish the desired length of fold or crease line in the and a clamp having a pair'of oblong jaws formed by a pair of bars adapted to establish the desired length of fold in the trousersleg and to hold thecloth in condition to permit the application of said creaser, the said oblong flat-irons opposing each other at opposite sides-of the fold of cloth protruding from 40 the said clamp, substantially as described.
