UNrre STATES JOl-IN NV. OARNES, OF
ATENT WALKER, OF PIERCE, OHIO.
ROOFING-TILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 691 ,239, dated January 14, 1902.
I Application filed August 24, 1901. Serial No. 73,114. (No model.)
To all when it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. CARNES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pierce, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roofing-Tiles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a view showing a number of tile placed in proper relative position. Fig. 2 is a section on line as 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section showing-the lap-joints of the tile. Fig. 41- is a top view of the single tile. Fig. 5 is a bottom or under sideview showing thetile in perspective.
The present invention has relation to roofing-tile; and it consists in the novel construction hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 represents a completed tile, the top or upper end of which is provided with a bead 2,which head is formed solid and is formed at the upper end of the tile, as illustrated in Figs. 1, 3, and 5, and is so formed for the purpose of strengthening the tile at its top or upper end and also providing a smooth plane surface upon its bottom or under side.
Upon opposite sides of the tile 1 are located the flanges 3 and 4, the flange 3 being extended from the bottom surface of the tile and the flange 4 extended from the top surface of the tile, so that when a given number of tile are placed in the position illustrated in Fig. 1 the flange 4: will come over the flange 3.
For the purpose of providing a means for making a perfect joint the flange 4 is concaved upon its bottom or under side at its upper end, so that it will fit upon the convexed surface or portion 5 of the flange 3. The flange 3 is provided with a groove 6, which groove extends from the convexcd portion 5 of the flange 3 to the extreme bottom of the tile 1, which bottom is provided with the extended flange '7, which flange is concaved upon its in position.
bottom or under side and laps over the head 2 of an adjacent tile, as illustrated in Fig. 3. The head is hollowed upon the lower end of the body and provided with a concaved lower face.
For the purpose of preventing any water from finding its Way between the lapped flanges of the tile proper the flanges 3 are inelined toward the body of the tile and the flanges 4 inclined to correspond with the inclination of the flanges 3.
For the purpose of securing the tile to the roof-boards anaperture, such as 8, is formed through the rib 2 of each tile, and through which apertures the nails 9 are passed, after which the tile next above is placed in posi tion, the extended flange 7 coming over the top of the nail.
It will be understood that by my peculiar 7o formation of the tile the bottom or under sides thereof have plain surfaces, except the flanges which overlap the adjacent tile or tiles, thereby lessening the danger of cracking or breaking the tile when they are placed It will also be understood that by providing the groove 6 should any water find its way to the upper surfaces of the flanges 3 it will be conducted to the top of the tile directly below, thereby preventing any leaking between the joints of the tile.
, For the purpose of cutting off any water that may be drawn by capillary attraction between the lap-joints of the tile the groove 10 is provided, which groove will receive the water, from whence it will find its way to the flange 3 and be conducted down upon the face of said flange or through the groove 6.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 0 Patent, is-
1. As an improved article of manufacture,
a tile provided with lateral flanges extended from the bottom surface and the top surface of the tile respectively, the flange extended 5 from the bottom of the tile provided with a convexed upper face and the lateral flange extended from the top surface of the body provided with a concaved lower face, and a groove formed in the upper face of the flange exrco a groove formed in the flange extended from the bottom surface of the tile, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have 15 hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
