Description

@inittab tttt gttttnt @frn WILLIAM C. MCGILL, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 69,1II, dated September 24, 1867.
IMPROVED HOUSEHOLD UTENSIL.

T0 WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MeGILL, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Household Implement; and Ihereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference heilig had to the aecoi'npanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to an instrument adapted for the several uses of opening and lifting cans and othei vessels, and which in its most complete form can also he used for sharpening:r knives.
Figure 1 is a. perspective view of the implement as employed for lifting a pan or plate.
Figure 2 shows the same as employed for lifting e can.
Figure 3 shows the application of the implement as a can-opener.
A is a. lance-formed knife or blade, having a jag or barb, B, crossed by a hilt, C, and mounted in a handle, 1). One end of the hilt C is curved forward and upward so as to form a rolling fulcrum, E, and jaw F, and its other end is formed into two plates or prongs, G Gr', of steel, which, being crossed in the manner shown, form a convenient knife-sharpener. When the instrument is employed to lift a pie-pan, as shown in iig. 1, the blade A cuts its way ,downward through the crust without bruising the same, and the portion F, pressing against the under side, serves, in conjunction with the barb B, to iirmly gripe the pan. For lifting a can or bucket the instrument is placed point downward, so as for the barb B lund jaw F to gripe the rim of the vessel, as seen in fig. 2. In the operationof can-opening the pointbf the knife is forcibly entered, and the handle being then depressed, the portion F discharges the `function ot' a rolling Fulcrum, enabling a depression of the handle to rip up the can, as shown in tig. 3. The end G G of the hilt may be used as the fulorum when desired, and may be forkedin the manner represented to form a knifesharpener, or be left plain.
I claim herein as new, and of my invention- 1. The curved cross-plate or hilt E, in combination with the knife A and handle D, made and constructed substantially as and for the purpose of a can-opener and plate or pan-lif`ter, as herein set forth. v
2. The crossed steel plates G G, in combination with knife A, hilt E, and handle D, the whole forming a combined `can-opener, plate-lifter, and knife-Sharpener, as herein stated.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
W'M. C. lMeGILL.
