FOOT WARNER.
(Applicatiun filed Mar. 29, 1901.]

PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN T. COLE, or MALMAISON, VIRGINIA.
FOOT-WARMER.
SPECIFICATION forming ioart of Letters Patent N 0. 690,836, dated January 7, 1902.
Application filed March 29,1901. Serial No. 53,497. (No model.)
To all whom it mayconccrn:
Be it known that I, JOHN '1. COLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Malmaison, in the county of Pittsylvania and State of Vir ginia, have invented a new'and useful Foot- Warmer, of which the following is a specification. r This invention relates tofoot-warmers, and has for its object to provide an improved device of this character for use in vehicles and elsewhere and arranged for the convenient reception of the feet, so as to insure a comfortable temperature therefor without danger of the same being scorched by the heat.
It is, furthermore, designed to have all of the parts of the device effectively housed and protected and to arrange the heating device so that it cannot be overturned within the body of the foot-warmer and also out of reach of the feet to be warmed.
With these and other objects in View the within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a foot-warmer constructed in accordance with the present invention, the cover being open for the reception of the feet. Fig.
2 is a central sectional View with the cover closed. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken at right angles to Fig. 2.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the substantially rectangular boxelike casing or body of the device, which has a half-top 2 fixed thereto and provided with a pair of slots or openings 3 in the inner edge thereof and for the reception of the heel portions of the feet to be warmed. I Opposite the fixed-top section there is hinged a half-cover 4, which is designed to close down upon and overlap the'inner edge of the fixed top, so as to close the upper open side of the device and at the same time leave the leg-openings 3 unQbstructed. 7
Within the box or casing is a flat bottom plate 5, which is disposed above the bottom edge of the sides of the box, so as to form a marginal foot-flange for the support of the device. which also serves for the support of the feet, there is provided an opening 6, and immediately below this opening there is provided a lamp-socket for the reception of the heat ing-lainp 7. This socket is formed by means of a pair of parallel partitions or vertical plates 8 extending in a direction transversely with respect to the hinged cover and secured at opposite ends to the opposite bottom por- At the center of this bottom plate,
tions of the sides of the casing and'at their upper edges to the under side of the bottom plate, there being a bottom9 applied to the .lower edges of the partitions 8. Within the socket are the transverse partitions or walls opening 6, and within the space bounded by thepartitions 8 and the walls 10 there is provided an upstanding marginal flange or rim Y11,1carried bythe bottom 9 and designed at 12 in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings, whereby air is furnished to the lamp.
Above the opening in the bottom plate there is provided a metallic chimney 13, having a base marginal outwardly-directed flange 14 to rest upon the bottom plate 5 and hinged to the latter, as indicated at 15, so as to swing away from the fixed top portion of the casing to uncover the opening 6 for the introduction and removal of the lamp. A suitable hood 16 is supported above the top of the chimney by means of a plurality of arms 17, connected at opposite ends to the hood and the chimney. The chimney is surrounded by means of a protective cage, shown in the drawings as formed by means of a pair of wire loops 18, connected to the base-flange 14, embracing the chimney and intersecting each other at opposite sides of the chimney.
-1O, that are located at opposite sides of the The intermediate inner edge portion of. the fixed top 2 is supported by means of a brace 19, rising from the bottom plate 5.
In using the device the chimney is first swung over upon its hinged support, so as to permit of the lamp being lighted, and then returned to its normal position, where it is held by means of a suitable fasteningas, for instance, a turn-button 20, shown in Fig. 2 and mounted upon the upper side of the bottom plate, so as to overlap the adjacent edge of the base-flange of the chimney. The feet are then introduced into the open top of the casing and rested upon the bottom plate 5, the legs being received within the leg-openings 3 in the fixed top portion, after which the hinged cover is folded over upon the top section, so as to close the casing and retain the heat therein. It will now be understood that the cage surrounding the chimney prevents the feet and legs from coming in contact with the heated chimney, and as the cage is carried solely by the base-flange it does not become sutficiently heated to injure the feet or shoes of the user of the device.
What is claimed is- 1. A foot-warmer comprising a casing having an internal foot-rest arranged above the lower edge of said casing and having a central opening, a lamp-socket arranged below said opening, a chimney having a lower outwardly-extending flange pivoted to the footrest and adapted to cover the said central opening, said chimney being independent of the lamp structure and supported by said footrest.
2. A foot-warmer, comprising a casing, having a bottom located above the bottom edge of the sides of the casing, and provided with a central opening, a lamp-socket carried by the under side of the bottom and alined below the opening therein, one or more air-passages from the lower side portion of the casing to the lamp-socket, a chimney located above the opening in the bottom and having a hinged connection with the latter, a protecting-cage embracing the chimney and carried thereby, a fixed top section having foot-receiving openings therein, and a hinged cover to overlap the openings of the top section.
3. The combination in a foot-warmer, of the casing having a fixed upper portion provided with recesses for the reception of the ankles or legs, an internal brace supporting said upper portion, ahinged cover t, an internal footrest having a central opening, a lamp-socket arranged centrally of and below the foot-rest, a lamp therein, a metallic chimney hinged to the foot-rest above the opening, said casing being provided With air-passages below the foot-rest.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto ailixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
