WILI-IELM WUGNER, OF HAGHTEL, GERMANY.
MOWING-MACHINE' szencrrrcarron formir g part Letters latent No. 690, 340, dated December 31,1 901; Application filed August 30, 1900. Serial No. 28,543. (No model) to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in the cutting apparatus of mowing-machines.
The object of my invention is to provide a self-sharpening cutting apparatus in which the stationary knives may be removed readily for repairs or for grinding and as readily replaced.
With this general object in view myinvention consists in the features, details of construction, and combination of parts, which will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings and then particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of acutting apparatus and adjacent parts of a mower embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section of the same, on a somewhat-enlarged scale, taken on the line A B, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a similar view on the line C D, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, a is a finger-bar secured to the main shoe 0 by means of screws 1) and having its outer end secured to the dividing-shoe m, to which is secured the dividing-board n.
To the finger-bar a is secured a series of guide-fingers I, each of which has a point, a step portion arranged to form a bearing for its respective knife of the stationary knives, as will be understood from the description hereinafter, and a tang portion, which is longer than thewidth of the finger-bar, as will be plain from Fig. 3 of the drawings, the tang portion of each guard-finger Z extending under the finger-bar and being secured thereto in such a manner that a recess is formed between the step portion of the guardfinger and the front of the finger-bar. The guardfingers are secured to the finger-bar preferably by countersunk bolts having their nuts upon'the top of the finger-bar, asshown in Fig. 3-.
In the recesses above described, which lie between the step portions of each guard-finger Z and the front of the finger-bar a, is located a stationary knife-bar 15, whose depth or thickness is such that the upper surface of the said stationary, knife-bar will be flush with the step portions of each guard-finger. To the upper surface of the stationary knifebar 25 is secured a series of stationary knives d, each of which lies upon the step portion of the respective guard-finger Z. Upon these stationary knives lies a series of movable knives g, secured to the under side of a movable knife-bar s, which is arranged to be reciprocated in any suitable manner, as by the pitman p. The movable knife-bar s is guided by a plurality of guide-cleats 1c and by guideblocks h and t, Fig. 1. The guide-cleats are detachably secured to the finger-bar a in a manner hereinafter described.
- To the under side of the stationary knifebar t is seen red a plurality of sustaining-cleats e, preferably by means of rivets, as shown in Fig. 2, the sustaining-cleats extending entirely across the bottom of the finger-bar,
each sustaining-cleat being directly beneath the respective guide-cleat In. Each guide cleat and its respective sustaining-cleat are held to the finger-bar in a detachable manner by suitable means-as, for example, by bolts having heads countersunk into the re spective sustaining-cleats, said bolts pass ing through the corresponding sustaining and guide cleats and being provided with nutsupon the upper side of the guide-cleats, so as to be readily accessible.
By the construction of cutting mechanism provided by me the knives of the movable and stationary cutters are self sharpening to the full extent to which this can be accomplished by the mere wear of one knife on another.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a mowing machine, the combination, with a finger-bar and a plurality of guardfingers each having a point, a step portion to serve as a bearing-surface for the stationary knives and a tang of a length greater than the width of the finger-bar, said tang being secured to the finger-bar in such a manner as to leave a recess between the step portion of 1 cured to the under side of the stationary v the guard-finger and the front of the fingerknife-bar and extending across the bottom bar, of a stationary knife bar lying in the'l face of the finger-bar, and means for remov- 15 said recesses, stationary knives fixed to the ably securing the guide-cleats and sustaining- 5 stationary knife-bar and having their points I cleats to the finger-bar.
in line with the respective guard fingers, a In testimony whereof I affix my signature movable knife-bar, a plurality of knives sei in presence of two Witnesses. cured. to said knife-bar and arranged to rest T upon the stationary knives, a plurality of I WILHELM E 1o guide-cleats resting upon the finger-bar and Witnesses:
provided with ends overlapping the movable GEORG TRUMP, knife-bar; a plurality of sustaining-cleats se- FUL. HALUssERMANN.
