SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 689,945, dated December 31, 1901.
Application led December 13, 1900. Serial No. 39,588. (No model.)
T0 all wir/071i, may concern.-
Beit known that I, ALBERT BAUMGARTEN, a resident of Freeport, in the county of Stephenson, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lemon- Squeezers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to that class of lemon-squeezers which are usually secured to a counter, table, or shelf.
It has heretofore been proposed to employ a lemon-squeezer comprising, essentially, a supporting-frame fixedly held and a lever movable longitudinally by a spiral-shaped cani, the parts being constructed to result in a gyratory shift of the lever tothe extent necessary to express the juice from the lemon and so that a single shift of the lever effects a complete operation. The present invention designs to improve such type of lemon-squeezers and to provide a construction of parts which is simple and inexpensive, compact in arrangement, and which can be readily and quickly assembled and removed for convenience in cleaning and shipment.
Vith these objects in view the invention consists in the several novel features of construction hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a lemon-squeezer embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a view in central vertical longitudinal section taken through the plunger-rod and lemon-holder, the bracket for sustaining the juice-receptacle being omitted. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the supporting-frame. Fig. 5 is a side view of the cone attached tothe follower. Fig. 6 is a face view of the operating-lever and follower-head to which the detachable cup is secured. Fig. 7 is a view in vertical section on line 7 7 of Fig. 3, the holder being omitted.
A denotes a supporting-frame ofV suitable shape and having a vertical web or rib ct, provided with holes or openings by which it can be secured to the edge of a table or counter. The supporting-frame is formed with a forwardly-projecting arm d', in which a lemonholder or cup B is sustained. Arm a is extended upwardly, as at d2, to form a vertically-` disposed pivot-1ng for the holder, which is provided with a vertically-arranged open slot or pocket a3 and stop-lugs ctiand d5, arranged, respectively, to retain the holderin horizontal and vertical position. The holder B is cup-shaped and serves to hold a section of a lemon during the squeezing operation. The holder B is formed with laterally-extending ears or lugs b, in which a pivot-pin b is secured and between which pivot-lug a2 will lit snugly to secure the holder against lateral play. Pivot-pin b when in pocket d3 serves to pivotally sustain the holder during the operation of the squeezer and provides a construction which permits the holder to be swung upwardly when it is desired to place a lemon in the holder or to be removed entirely from the frame when the holder is to be cleaned. The holder can be lifted out of the frame when either in horizontal or verticalposition. Thesupporting-frameAis also formed with arms or bearings 01,6 and al', in which a plunger-rod C is held in manner which permits both axial and rotary movements thereof. The rod C is provided at its inner end with a screw-thread c, which engages an internally-threaded central opening in an operating-lever D. The operating-lever has integrally formed therewith a handle d, a cam E, having a spirally-shaped cani edge e, and a follower-head F, whereto a follower G is detachably secu red. The cam edge e is arranged to engage a bearing-roller d8, mounted on a stud or pin et, held in arm d of the supporting frame. This roller is preferably mounted immediately back of the plungerrod C. The cam E is formed as a lateral web projecting from a central web 6W, and the cam edge e. is formed on said web, which overhangs or projects over the bearing-arms et to provide a compact and convenient arrangement and construction of parts. The outer end of the plunger-rod C is provided with a groove c2, whereby the rod may be turned when it is desired to remove the operating-lever and shaft for the purpose ot' cleaning or packing for shipment. The follower-head F is provided with straight sides fj', which iit into grooved lugs g g, formed on tho back of the follower G, and is provided also with a restlngf, arranged to support and vertically position the follower when the operating-lever is in its normal position. (Shown in Figs. 2 and 3.) Theve'rtical web g of the follower'abuts against the inner face of the follower-head F, is detachably secured thereto by lugs g g,A
Hangs or rim g2, which prevents the escape of v thejuice during the operation,a cone g3,which penetrates a lemon held in the holder, and a projecting lip g4, which directs the juice expressed during the initial shift of the follower into the juice-cup or other receptacle.
The operation ofpartsis as follows: Assuming the parts to be in the normal position shown in the drawings, the holder can be swung upwardly into the position shown in dott-ed lines in Fig. 3 or can be removed from pocket as, so the lemon can be readily placed thereon. The lever D will then be oscillatcd upwardly, and during such shift the cam edge e will engage roller a8 and impart a longitudinal or axial movement to the follower to the extent necessary to cause the cone g3 to bore into the lemon and express the juice therefrom. The handle will then be rotated in reverse direction and then moved longitudinally to its normal position, or the lever can be simultaneously rotated and shifted Vlongitudinally bylateral pressure against the lever vduring the return oscillatory shift.
A bracket H, sustained and secured by one of the screws which secures the supportingframe A to its support, comprises a depending arm h, annulus h', having a large opening h2 therein, and ribs or lugs h3. Bracket H is arranged in close proximity to the lower -portion of the lemon-holder and serves to sustain ajuice-cup of usual construction, such as is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, in proper position to catch the juice expressed from `the lemon during the operation of the squeezing members. When itis desired to discharge the juice directly into a glass or tumbler, the juice-cup is withdrawn from the bracket, and the juice will then pass through opening h2 in the bracket and into a glass or tumbler held immediat-ely beneath such opening.
The parts are constructed and arranged so 'the follower' in its extreme outward position will permit a section ofalemon of usual size to be `placed in the holder or to permit a holder with a large lemon section therein to be placed in position in the frame. lf necessary, the operating-lever may be shifted longitudinally to cause the cone to hold the lemon in Vposition in the holder until itis desired to -rotate `the lever.
'It will be observed that the lever and handle in normal position dependffrom the shaft, and the cam is arranged to advance the follower toward the holder when the operatinglever is swung upwardly from its lowermost position, and the sweep of the lever is substantially forward of the counter or table.
The follower can be readily detached The foll Such construction and arrangement are advantageous, because the lever when not in use is always concealed and held beneath the table or counter and supporting-frame in readiness for use, thus permitting that portion of the table or counter adjacent the squeezer to be used without danger of being interfered with by the lever. In prior constructions of this class of lemon-squeezers the normal position of the lever-handle was above the counter or table, in which position the lever was an objectionable obstruction and interfered with the use of the adjacent portion of the counter or table.
lt will be observed that the follower is detachably and directly secured to the lever,- which not only permits the follower to be readily removed to be cleaned, but also provides a simple rand inexpensive construction and compact arrangement. The cam-lever being secured to the plunger-rod by a screwthread can be read-ily disconnected, andboth of these parts can then be removed from `the supporting-frame to be cleaned or for convenience in packing for shipment.
The particular manner of sustaining the holder is also simple, convenient, and advantageous. In Patent No. 651,432, granted to Ine June l2, 1900, there is showna construction in which the holder is pivotally sustained and which could be removed from the 'frame when the holder had been swung horizontally out of its operative position. In thefpresent construction the holder is pivotally sustained, so it can be swung from horizontal position to a vertical position for convenience inplacing the lemon therein and can be readily removed by lifting the holder out of the vertically-extending pocket in the supportinglug while the holder iseither in vertical or horizontal position. I
The arrangement of parts throughout is a compact one, which occupies little-spaceland can be conveniently secured tothe edge of-a table or counter. Both squeezing members and the operating-lever can be readily removed froln the frame for convenience in cleaning, as it frequently occurs that the lemon after having been compressed adheres to one of the squeezing members. The construction throughout is such that-all the parts secured in the supporting-frame can be -removed very quickly.
In prior `constructions of this class of squeezers it has been customary to prov-ide an adjustable shelf or bracket for the juicecup or one which could be ldetached when 'the juice was to be expressed directly into alglass or tumbler. By forming the bracket Hof an annular supporting-ring with a large central opening wherethrough the juice can pass without contacting with thev bracket a Vfixed support can be employed which need-neither be removed frequently to be cleaned norremoved or adjusted when the juice is to vbe expressed 'directly into a glass or tumbler.
loo
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
I. In a lemon-squeezer, the combination with a supportingframe and alongitudinallymovable operating-lever guided therein, said lever having also an oscillatory movement, of a holder and cone, one of which is sustained by said supporting-frame, and the other of which is detachably and directly secured to said lever, a plunger-rod, to the inner end of which said lever is detachably secured by a screw-thread, said lever being provided with an integrally-formed cam for engaging said frame forimparting to said lever the extent of longitudinal movement necessary to squeeze the lemon during the oscillation of said lever in one direction.
2. In a lemon-squeezer, the combination with a supporting-frame, a longitudinallymovable operatinglever guided therein, said lever having also an oscillatory movement and having a cam and follower-head formed integrally therewith, and a rod mounted in said frame and to the inner end whereof said lever is detachably secured, of a holder and a cone, one of which is sustained by said frame and the other of which is detachably secured to said follower-head, said cam engaging said frame for imparting to said lever the longitudinal movement necessary to squeeze the lemon during the oscillatory shift of said lever in one direction.
3. In a lemon-squeezer, the combination with a supporting-frame and a follower movably sustained and guided therein, of a holder provided with a pivot-pin, said frame being formed with a horizontal arm and a vertical pivot-lug, having a vertically-disposed open pocket or slot therein, in Which'the pivotpin of said holder is pivotally held and Wherefrom the holder can be lifted when either in horizontal operative position or in vertical p0- sition.
4. In a lemon-squeezer, the combination with a supportingframe, and a follower movably sustained and guided therein, of a holder provided with a pivot-pin, said frame being formed with an arm and a vertical pivot-lug, having a vertically-disposed open pocket or slot therein, in Which the pivot-pin of said holder is pivotally held and Wherefrom the holder can be lifted when either in horizontal operative position or in vertical position, and stops formed on said pivot-lug for retaining the holder in horizontal and vertical position.
