SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 689,552, dated December 24, 1901. Application iiled June l5, 1901. Serial Nol 64,655. @lo model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID LIPPY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manslield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio,
lhave invented certain new and useful lmprovemeuts in Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part Io of this specification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a side elevation showing the pump properly connected for power use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the pump properly connected for hand use.
The presentinvention has relation to pumps designed for either hand or power use; and it consists in the novel construction hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in in the claims.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, l represents the stock', to which is connected in the usual manner the well tube or casing,and into which well tube o r casing is extended through the stock the reciprocating rod 2, said reciprocating rod being provided with the ordinary piston and valve. To the top or upper end of the stock l is secured the head 3, which is substantially of the form shown and is for the purpose of providing a means for connecting the working parts of the pump. To the head 3 is pivotally connected the link or connecting-bar 4, which link or connecting-bar eX- tends upward and has pivotally connected to its upper end the head 5, to which head 5 is connected the operating-lever 6. 'lo one side 4oV of the head 5 is connected or formed integral with said head the arm 7, which arm is spaced or set a short distance from the operating-lever 6, so as to provide room Vfor the adjustable weight S. To the head 5 is pivotally counected the clutch-bar 9, which clutch-bar is for the purpose of gripping the reciprocating rod 2. In the drawings I have illustrated the clutch-bar held in proper position upon the reciprocating rod 2 by means of a set-screw l0; but it will be understood that any other 5o well-known means may be employed without departing from the nature of my invention. The weight S is adjustably connected to the arm 7, said arm being set to one side of the operating-handle 6, so-as to bring the weight out of the way of the operating-handle 6; but f it will be undersood thatit is immaterial so far as the operation of the pump is concerned .whether the weight S is located upon the arm 7 or the lever 6.
6o The object and purpose of adj ustably connecting the weight S either to the arm 7 or to the operating-handle 6 is to place said weight into such a position in reference t0 the fulcrum-point of the operating-handle 6 asY to 65 compensate for different weights of columns of water to be lifted, and thereby provide a perfect counterbalance, reference being had to the weight of the reciprocating rod and the weight'to be lifted by said reciprocating rod. 7o

It will be understood that in the operation of pumps it is frequently desirable to operate the pump either by hand or wind or other power, and in order to provide a single pump capable of operation either by hand or power I provide the downward-extending rod 1l, which downward-extending rod is pivotally connected to the socket-head 5 at a common center with the clutch-bar 9, said downwardextending rod being pivotally connected at,8o its bottom or lower end to the leverl2, which lever is pivotally connected or fulcrumed to a bracket, such as 13, or its equivalent. Upon the lever l2 is adj ust-ably connected the weight S, which weight is for the same purpose when placed upon the lever 12 that it is when placed upon the operating-handle 6 or arm 7 and is to be adjusted in the saine manner, reference being had to the increased leverage of the lever l2 over that of the operating-handle 6 and 9o the weight to be lifted with the power used.
For the purpose of adjustment for the connection between the socket-head 5and the lever l2 the downward-extending rod 11 is provided with a series of apertures let, said apertures being located at the top or upper end of the downward-extending rod 11.
For the purpose of providing a means for connecting power ot' any kind to the reciproeating rod 2 the yoke l5 is provided, said yoke being pivotally attached in the usual manner.
It will be understood that by my peculiar arrangement I am enabled to so adjust the weight either upon the lever, arm, or operating-handle that the elevating of water or other liquids can be accomplished with ease by reason of the weight acting as a counterbalance, overcoming the resistance of the column or Weight of Water or other liquid to be lifted plus the small power required to operate the pump in connection with the adjustable weight either by hand or other power, the diierence required in power being only such as the difference between the force exerted by weight and the resistance offered by the column of water or other liquid to be lifted.
The purpose of placing the arm 7 at one side of the operating-lever 6 is to bring the weight 8 out of the way of the hand of the operator. .l
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a pump, a stock and a casing therefor, a reciprocating rod, a frame fixed to the stock, a socket supported by the frame carried by the stock, an operating-handle fixed to the socket, and au arm located at one side of the operating-handle, and an adjustable weight located upon the arm located at one side of the operating-handle and adjustable to and from the reciprocating rod, and a clutch connected to the reciprocating rod, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of astock, a head connected thereto, a reciprocating rod and a clutch-bar connected to said reciprocating rod, a socket-head pivotally connected to a link or connecting-bar supported by the head, a downward-extending arm pivoted at a com mon center with the pivotaljoint of the clutchbar at its upper end, and the lower end thereof pivoted to a lever and said lever provided with an adjustable weight, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
