INVALID-SPITTOON.

-TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known ,that I, JOHN M. OAYCE, ofY Franklin, in thc county of W'illiamson, and State of Tennessee,` have invented a new'and improved Invalids Spittoon; und Ido hereby declare the following to be 'a full, ,.clear, and exact dcscription of thesame, reference being had to -the accompanying drawings, forming part tif-,this
specification, and in which the ligure is n. perspective view of my invention, a" portion of the shell of the handle.
being removed to show its interior construction. y In this invention the cover of the spittoon is raised by the act of lifting the instrument, und falls by its own weight when the spittoo'n is set down again.
This spittoon is desi gncd for use in sick-rooms. The old-fashion ed spittoon is not only oil'ensive to the-senses,
but is exceedingy inconvenient to handle, in factso much so that an invalid, if very feeble, will beunable toV lift it. On the other hand, spittoons constructedwith covers require to have the cover raised by the hand before the' instrument is lifted for use.. They are also, in general, diflcult to cleanse-properly.
My instrument is designed to ohviate'all these defects inthe construction of Spittyons, and to be at fonce light, cheap, and easy to handle, while efectually covering from sight all e'xpectorated matter, except at 'the particular moment when it is opened for use. l i
In order that others skilled in the art to which .my invention appertainsmay be enabled to make and use the same, I will proceed te describe it in dtail.`
In lthe drawings, A is a cylindrical box of tin or other suitable material, its-upper side half covered by' the xed plate a, and halt' covered by the hing'ed lid B, shown by red lines in its position when raised. C is the hollow tin handle of the box- A, by which the spittoon is lifted when used. Inside of this handle is a. lever, D, of wire, pivoted at d, and having one end, d', bent `up and projecting through an aperture in the handle, against a projecting arm,'b, of the lid B, and the other o r outer end also'bent up and terminating in the button d. By depressing the button d", the other end, d', of the lever israised, and the lid B against which'it presses is raised with it. When removing the thumb from the button' d the lid falls of itsv own` weight. v The arm of the level-.D towards the box A is made longest, so as to o''er no' resistance tothe fail of the lid; The lbutton d is Vso situated that it will invariably be Ydepressed by simply grasping the handle C, there being no necessity of using the thumb specially for that purpose. -There is no commumcatwubetween the cavity of the handle C1 `l and the'interior of the box A.` The latter is bounded by simple plnne or concave surfaces, and can be cleansed without the slightest diculty. The -wall 'of the box opposite to the side upon whichthe lid Bcloses dow'n may be perforated along its upper edge with small holes e e e, if desired. Through these holes the breath, some of whichwillalwaysbe thrown into the boxv with' the act of expectortion, can pass out without' retqrning to o'end the olfactories of theinvalid. i
Having thus described my invention, ,what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLet'ters Patent, is
A spittoon havinglthe lid B, in combination with the lever D, Vworking in the handle and operated by .the button d, substantially as and for the purpose specified. l V l To the above specification of my improvement I have signed my hand this 24th day of May,18`67.
JOHN M. CAYCE.
