LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 689,334, dated December 1'7, 1901.
Application led August 20, 1901. Serial NO- 72|63l- (N0 111011811).
T0 @ZZ whom, t 'may concern/s Be it known that I, WARREN I-I. TAYLOR, of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and usefullrnprovements in Latches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in latches; and it consists in a bolt, a cam adapted when moved in either direction to retract the bolt, and a movable locking-dog interposed between the cam and bolt and adapted to be moved to hold the bolt in its retracted position when the cam is moved in one direction.
My invention further consists in the parts and combinations of parts, as will be more fully described, and pointed outin the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the lock, the front of the casing being removed and the latch-bolt shown in its normal position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the latch-bolt retracted, but not locked; and Fig. 3 is a viewV showing the bolt retracted and locked.
A represents the latch-casing, and B vthe knob, the spindle C of which is mounted in the casing in the usual or any approved manner. Secured to the spindle C within casing A is the laterally-projecting latch-retracting cam D, having arms 1 and 2, so arranged with relation to the follower-E, rigidlysecured to the inner end of the latch-bolt stem 3, that when the knob is turned in one direction the arm 1 engages the follower and retracts the bolt 8 and when turned in the opposite Adirection the arm 2 engages the follower and retracts the bolt. The stem 3 of the' bolt passes through the plate 5, supported against the studs 6, the plate 5 forming a seat for one end of the spring '7, which latter tends to normally hold the bolt 8 in forward position.
Pivotally mounted on a stud 9, secured to the casing, is the bell-crank lever 10, one end of which rests adjacent to the front edge of the retracting-cam, while its other or hook end rests adjacent to the bolt S. The front face of retracting-cam is provided in rear of arm 2 with a recess 1l, the lip 12 adjacent to the outer edge of said recess projecting sufficiently to engage the rear end of the bell-crank lever 10 when the cam is turned in a direction to cause its arm 1 to engage the follower E. When the knob is thus turned, the engagement of arm 1 with follower E retracts the bolt. As the bolt approaches the limit of its inner movement the lip 12 engages the inner end of lever 10, and a continued movement of the knob turns the bell-crank lever on its pivot and causes the hook 14: on the lever 10 to engage the stud 15, formed integral with the bolt 8, and hold the boltin its retracted position until released by turning the knob in the opposite direction. With the foregoing construction it will be seen that when the knob is turned in a direction to bring the arm 2 of the retracting-cam against the follower the bolt will be retracted, and upon being released will shoot out, as usual. When, however, the knob is turned in the opposite direction and with a slight additional force, it will cause the pivoted hook to engage the stud at the baseof the bolt and hold it retracted until the knob is again turned in the opposite direction.
I have shown the bolt with hook-engaging studs on its opposite faces, so that the latchbolt may be reversed for right and left hand doors.
It is evident that changes in the form andv construction ofthe several parts might be made' without Aavoiding my invention, and hence I would have it understood that I do not restrict myself to the particular construction and arrangement of-parts shown and described; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a latch, the combination .with a bolt and a cam adapted when moved in either direction to retract the bolt, of a pivoted lever interposed between the cam and bolt and adapted when the cam is moved in one direc- Y tion, to lock the bolt in its retracted position.
2. In a latch, the combination with a bolt and a cam adapted when turned in either direction to retract the bolt the said cam hav- IOC xo ing-dog interposed between the 'cam and bolt and adapted to be moved to hold the bolt in its retracted position when the cam is moved in one direction.
ln testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib- I5 ing,r Witnesses.
