and exact description of the invention, suchas will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains 1o make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to the combination of folding beds and couches; and it consists in the combinations and arrangements herein-I after specified and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the framework of a combined folding bed and couch constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an end View with certain portions broken away in order to show upholstering and the'location of the bed, the dotted lines showing the outline of the bed when arranged to be used as such. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the supporting-legs-and the manner of attaching it to the frame.

In the drawings, A is a rectangular frame which forms the basis of the couch and supports the front of the bed-frame when that is in position to be occupied as such, as shown The frame A is supported in front by legs A A. These are preferably xed to the frame and may be in turn supported on casters. The rear of the frame A is supported by broad supports B B, which in turn may also be supported on casters. These are fixed to the frame A and extend somewhat to the rear of it, the extension corresponding in width to the width of the end pieces C C of the bed-frame.

D is the bed-frame, which contains and su pports the mattress and bedding in the usual manner.

The bed-frame is made up of the side pieces CZ' d and the end pieces C C, together with such cross-supports as may be necessary.

The rear portion of the bed-frame is supported upon swinging legs E E, which are pivotedat the upper ends by hinges having horizontal pivots in line with O at c. These are shown in-detail in Fig. 3.

Awhen in the position shown in Fig. 2 the back of the couch, which couch also may be upholstored, as shown in Fig. 2 at G.

H represents the bed, shown by breaking away a portion of Fig. 2, and this may be supported in any convenient manner when the bed is elevated in the position shown in Fig. 2 by the use of straps or any other retaining means, all of which are familiar.

In order that the edges of the bed may not 7o be unduly high, the rails or side pieces d d are divided,the upper portion .IJbeinghinged to a lower portion or the rail proper and being adapted to turn outwardly and downwardly, as shown upon the right-hand side of Fig. l, or to be turned upwardly, as shown at the left-hand side. The supports E E by virtue of the manner in which they are arranged de not swing loosely, but only swing in-a longitudinal direction with the bed, and 8o therefore are never in the way when the bed is raised, as shown in Fig. 2. They are then swung in under the rails CZ d and retained by hooks.

Itis obvious fromtheforegoing description, the proper bedding and upholstering being supplied, that the device constitutes a combined bed and couch, the bed being shown (when the necessary bedding is supplied) in Fig. l and the couch in Fig. 2, and that all 9o that is necessary to transform or arrange the apparatus to utilize the bed is to turn the elevated portion of the back of the couch downwardly and bring the bed-upholstered faces together, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and detach the legs E E from their hooks or supports, when they fall down to the floor and form the rear support for the bed-frame. While in this position the bed is as solid andrigid upon the floor as any bed-frame could roo be that had no tendency Whatever to overturn. Elevating the supports E E, the bed can be raised to an upright position upon the pivots b b and, ifdesired, crowded up against the wail, thereby narrowing: the space which it occupies and leaving only ihe couch for its appropriate use.

Having thus describei my invention, what I claim is- In a. combined couch and bed, the combination of a frame A constructed to form the seatv portion of a couch, a support B at, the rear and at each end of the frame A, a frame D constructed on one side lto form the back of a. couch and on the other side to form a bed, the frame D being pivoted between the WILLIAM N.
