Description
@uiten tutte' @anni @frn IMPROVEMENT IN ROTARY STEAM ENGINES.
@igt tljehule refemt it im tigee ettets ateitt mit uiting im uf the smite,
TO ALL `WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN Q. WELCH, of the-eity of Oswego, in the county of Clackamas, and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement on the Rotary Steam Engine and do hereby declare that the following is zt` full, clear, and exect description of the construction :md operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in whichl Figure lrepresents the engine with the covering removed and the gudgeon of the shaft Sput off, showing the slotl P in th shaft S. The oblong circle C is so shaped that ai cord drawn through the centre of the shaItS will measure an equal distance to any point in the oblong circle C, as described by fig. `l.
Figure 2 shows the engine. v L
Figure 3 represents the shaft and mortise, and the valve-piston or slide under it, with one of the four or i eight pieces of packing removed;
Figure 4 represents the covering orihead, as may be seen in fig. 2, at m, showin-g the escapement g.
At figs. 1 and 2 steam is let in at the feed pipe F, through the narrow aperture'y, and turns the valve or piston D, cutting ofi" the` steam thatr escapes at y. The angular gutter from `the` steam-chest to the piston or` springW is for the purpose of4 keeping the shaft steam-tight. The steam coming fromtthe steam-chest presses 1 nga-inst the spring or piston' W. The slide D is packed in the centre ofthe shaft, `as may seen in the drawing, either with metallic or' lint pecking, forced down against the slide D hy ascrewand spring placed in the` hollowl end of the shaft S, as set forth in thespacking of the edges of the slide D.
Having thus describedmy invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Pntent`isat g, substantially upon the principle and in .the manner as hereiniset forth.
The arrangement of the oblong circle C, slot P in the shaft S, slide D, spring Qepertule y, and the escape JOHN o. WELCH;
Witnesses:
C. M. CARTER, JAMES MeKEoWN.
