Be it known that LWILLIAM F. SIEGENER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certainlmprovements in Feeding Mechanism for Punching-Machines, of which the following isa specification. My invention relates to the feeding mechanism of machines for punching sheet matero rial, such as paper, pasteboard, sheet metal,
and the like. In the present instance my invention has been applied to a machine for punching paper in the manufacture of what is known as shelf-paper, such article of 13 manufacture being ordinary plain paperwith a pattern border formed by cutting out with suitable dies, knives, or otherwise a portion of such paper.
My invention consists of certain improvements in the mechanism for feeding the material to the dies, such mechanism coacting with the mechanism for operating the dies, so that the amount of material fed will equal the amount cut by the dies at each operation.
My invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the machine for cutting or stamping the material, taken on the line a a, Fig. 3, showing my im- 36 proved feeding device applied thereto. Fig.

In cutting or stamping machines of the character to which my invention may be applied the material must be fed continuously and accurately, so that the end of one out may register with the next succeeding out. In the paper cutting or stamping machine in connection with which my invention has been shown the dies and the feeding devices are so timed with relation to each other that the feed of the paper will take place during the ascent of the dies after the cutting operation and the retraction of the feeding mechanism for a fresh supply of paper will be during the Serial No. 67,543- (No model.)
holding of the paper by the dies as the latter are cutting. Several sheets of material may be operated upon, in the present instance twelve sheets of paper or more being cut at one operation of the dies.
The mechanism forming the subject of my invention has been applied to a well-known form of paper-punching machine. Hence the description will be confined solely to such mechanism.
In the drawings herewith, 1 represents the frame of the machine, having the bed 2, upon which the cutting operation takes place. In front of this bed 2 is the table orshelf 3, upon which the paper is held and guided to the dies. These dies are operated by means of a suitable eccentric 4, carried by the shaft 5, the latter having a gear-wheel6 mounted on the end of the same and by which it is driven, said gear-wheel meshing with a pinion 7, secured to the main driving-shaft 8. The lower die is fixed to the bed 2, and the upper die is guided in suitable ways and supported by a trunnion-bearing, being raised and lowered by the eccentric 4, carried by the shaft 5.
Located on each side of the bed 2 and table 3 are the gripping or feeding jaws for the paper, consisting of the lower member 11, having a rack 12 on the upper side, and the upper member 13, which is maintained normally above the lower member 11 by means of the springs 14, coiled around the hinge-rod 15 of these jaw members. The gripping-jaws are arranged in such position that they will embrace the edge of the layer of material ready to engage such material as soon as the jaws are pressed together. By providing springs to keep the jaws apart the said jaws will readily slide over the layer of material as they The lower members 11 of the gripping-jaws have side extensions 16, adapted to suitable slideways 17 in the frame of the machine, so that said lower member is prevented from rising during its reciprocatory movements.
To move the gripping-jaws, the toothed segments 21 are employed, such segments having teeth 22, meshing with the rack 12 on the under side of the lower jaw member 11. These segments are carried by the rock-shaft 23, suitably journaled in the frame, which are retracted for a fresh hold upon the same.-
shaft receives its movement from the shaft 5 by means of a crank-arm 24 and link 25, the latter being adj ustably secured to a face-plate 26, carried by said shaft 5, whereby the extent of movement of the gripping members may be regulated at will. In the present instance the cut of, the dies is five inches, and the link is so secured to the face-plate that the movement of the segments imparted to the gripping members will be sufficient to move the material along five inches, so that each succeeding cut of the dies will register with the last.
As before noted, the gripping-jaws are retracted during the cutting operation of the dies. Now as soon as these dies have fin ished their work and begin to rise rollers 31, carried at the lower forked end of rods 32, hung from one end of the levers 33, pivoted at 34 to the frame of the machine, are brought into engagement with the upper members 13 of the gripping-jaws and are held thereto by means of the cams 35, carried by the shaft 5. This action is effected as follows: Pivoted at 36 to the opposite end of the levers 33 are the frames 37, composed of the cross-pieces 38, connected, by means of rods 39, with similar cross-pieces 40, arranged above 'the shaft 5.

These stems carry springs 43, which tend to depress the frame 37 and, acting through the lovers 33, raise the rollers 31 from their contact with the upper members 13 of the gripping-jaws. Carried by the upper cross-piece 40 are the rollers 44, adapted to be engaged by the cams 35 as the shaft 5 rotates. When'such engagement takes place,the frame 37 is raised, and this movement acting on the levers 33 in the opposite direction to a depression of the frame 37 lowers the rollers 31 onto the member 13 of the gripping-jaws, and said roller is held thereto until the shaft 5 has turned, permitting the cams 35 to release the rollers 42. When the gripping-jaws are closed by the downward pressure of the rollers 31, they are moved forward by the segments 21 engaging the racks 12 on the under side of the lower members, carrying a fresh supply of As soon as the dies begin to cut, the shaft 5 has by this time turned, so that its cams 35 release the rollers 42, carried by the frame 37. Said frame is lowered and the rods 32 are raised, lifting the rollers 31 from their engagement with the upper member 14 of the gripping-jaws, and they are moved rearward by the return movement of the segments for a fresh supply ofvpaper.
Although my invention has been applied to a paper cutting or stamping machine,it may be, as before noted, applied to any form of punching or-stamping machine employing coacting dies or knives and operating upon continuous strips or sheets of material.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination in a machine of the character described adapted to punch a series of sheets of the material at a single operation, longitudinal gripping-jaws for engaging the edges of said sheets, said jaws overlapping the same, means for reciprocating said jaws, a vertically-movable member for closing said jaws, and means for operating said member during the movement of said jaws in one direction.
2. The combination in a machine of the character described for punching continuous sheets of material, of the longitudinal gripping-jaws between which the edges of the material operated upon are continuously disposed, cutting-dies, means for actuating said dies, at vertically-movable member controlled by the die-actuating mechanism for closing said jaws when the dies are in the raised position, and means for moving said jaws in one direction when closed and in the opposite direction when opened, substantially as described.
3. The combination in a machine of the character described for punching continuous sheets of material, of the longitudinal gripping-jaws engaging the edges of said material, thelatter being disposed between said jaws at all times, cutting-dies, a shaft for operating said dies, a vertically-movable member controlled by said shaft for closing the jaws at regular intervals, and means for reciprocating said jaws.
4. The combination in a machine of the character described for punching continuous sheets of material, of the longitudinal gripping-jaws engaging the edges of said material and by means of which the latter is moved,
the edges of said material being disposed at all times between said jaws, cutting-dies, a shaft for operating said dies, means carried by said shaft for closing the dies, one of said gripping-jaws having a rack, and gearing meshing with said rack and by which the same is moved, movement being imparted to said gearing from the shaft operating the dies.
5. The combination in a machine of the character described for punching continuous sheets of material, of the longitudinal grip ping-jaws adapted to engage the edges of the said material and by means of which the latter is moved, said material being disposed at all times between the jaws, a vertically-movable member for closing said jaws at regular intervals, a rack carried by one of said jaws,
a gear-segment journaled to the frame of the machine and engaging said rack, a drivingshaft, a connection between the said shaft for operating the gear-segment whereby the gripping-jaws may be operated back and forth by the rotation of'said driving-shaft, and a connection between said driving-shaft and the vertically-movable member whereby the latter will engage the jaws during the move ment of the same in one direction only.
(3. The combination in a machine of the character described, of the gripping-jaws, a pair of cutting-dies, the upper of said dies being capable of vertical movement, a shaft having an eccentric for moving said die, a roller adapted to engage the upper member of the gripping-jaws,a rod carrying said roller, a lever pivoted to the-frame of the machine and connected to said rod, a frame connected to said lever, and a cam carried by the shaft for operating the die, said cam engaging the frame and operating the lever whereby the roller is caused to engage and close the gripping-jaws, substantially as described.
7. The combination in a punching or stamping machine for operating upon continuous sheets of material, of the longitudinal grip ping-jaws hinged together and adapted to en- ,gage the edges of the material operated upon,
means carried by the hinges for keeping said jaws normally apart, a vertically-movable member for closing said jaws at regular intervals, means for operating the same, a toothed rack carried by one of said jaws and means for reciprocating the latter by engagement with said toothed rack.
8. The combination in a punching orstamping machine of the character described, of the gripping-jaws, hinges for the same, springs carried by said hinges and engaging said jaws for spreading the same apart, a toothed rack carried by one of said jaws, gear-segments adapted to engage said toothed rack and move the jaws, and means for reciprocating said gear-segments.
9. The combination in a punching or stamping machine of the character described, of the gripping-jaws hinged together and mounted on each side of the machine, means for keeping said jaws normally spread, means for closing said jaws at certain intervals, toothed racks carried by one member of each pair of jaws, gear-segments adapted to mesh with said racks whereby the jaws may be moved, a rock-shaft, a crank carried thereby, a driving-shaft, a face-plate carried thereby, and an adjustable link connecting the face-plate and the crank of the rock-shaft whereby the gear-segments may be reciprocated back and.
forth to move the gripping-jaws, by the driv-.

10. The combination in a punching or stamping machine of the character described, of the gripping-jaws, means for holding the same open, a cam-shaft, verticallymoving rods carrying rollers adapted to contact with the gripping-jaws and close the same at intervals, cams on the cam-shaft, and means for imparting the action of said cams to the vertically-moving rods whereby the latter may be lowered to close the gripping-jaws, substantially as described.
11. The combination in a punching or stamping machine of the character described, of the cutting-dies, a shaft carrying an eccentric for operating the upper of said dies, gripping-jaws, means for keeping said jaws normally open, vertically-moving rods for closing said jaws at intervals, cams carried by the die-operating shaft, and means controlled by said cams for operating the vertically-moving rods, said means serving to lower the rods as the die rises, and vice versa, substantially as described.
12. The combination in a punching or stamping machine of the character described, of the gripping-jaws, means for keeping said jaws normally open, vertically-moving rods carrying rollers for contact with the jaws whereby the latter may be closed at certain intervals, levers carried by the frame of the machine to which said rods are connected, a cam-shaft, frames embracing said cam-shaft, said frames being connected at their lower end with the levers, and having guidingstems at the top, and rollers carried by said frames for contact with the cams whereby the vertically-moving rods may be lowered, substantially as described.
