IMPROVMENT IN LIFTING-JACK.

Be it known that I, E. L. MARSH, of Greenwich, in the county of Huron, and State of Ohio, have invented certain 'new and useful Improvements in'Fence-Jacks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and v complete description 'of the c.' 11e, rsfc.ence being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the jack.

A, iig. 1, is a base, on which are erected the standards or stays B,br:1eed by the rods C. Between these stays ishung a trapezc, D, fig. 3, on which is securefl'the lever E, as seen in iig. 1. The short arm of this lever is covered with iron, in order to protect it from abrasion and give additional strength to the same. On the upper side of the long arm ofA the lever is rack F, into the teeth of which fnlls the check-rod Gr. l

The use and application of this jack are as follows: It is brought as near as practicable to the corner .of the fonce to 'be lifted. The long end of the lever is raised, as indicated by the dotted. lines a, fig. 1, so as to bring the minor end under the fence, a section of the base being cutaway, making a deep` notch, H, so as to allow a greater depression of the arntnnnd thus bring the jack near the object to be lifted. Also, by. hanging the lever=on the swing or trapeze in the manner as shown 'in the' drawing, the lever can bo drawn back and then thrown violently forward so as ,to force its way under the fence, without the necessity of moving the whole apparatus for that purpose or (ligging holes for iutruding the end of the lever. On depressing the major arm of the lever thefence is lifted up, and is thus held by the check-rod or yoke G at any height by the notches of the rack over ,which the yoke slides, so that the corner-stones or blocks may be adjusted or other needful work performed. By the use of. this apparatus one person is enabled ,to do' thework of several with 'greater ease and sai`ety,',ther'eby saving time and labor in repairing the fence.
