SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 688,812, dated December 17, 1901.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN AUGUSTUS ALBRECHT, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, and a resident of Berlin, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Multiple-Magazine Linotype- Machines, (for which application for patent has been made in Germany on the 26th of November, 1898,) of which the following is an exact specification.
The present invention relates to linotypemachines for different headings in combination with ordinary-text printing, in which for each kind of printing special magazines and keyboards are arranged and in which the typesor matrices of all magazinesare conducted in the same way to the place of assemblage.
The object of my invention is to provide a machine with special type for printing headings in addition to those of the magazine of the standard linotype. The characteristic feature is that my machine having a separate distributing-rail can be connected to a linotype-machine of ordinary kind, the distributing-rail of the additional magazine in combination with the distributing-rail of the standard machine thereby forming one single rail. Further, my machine can be moved away from the standard machine at every instant and connected to a second machine Without the work of the first machine being interrupted by its removal. The interchangeable magazine, with its distributing-rail,can be connected to the standard machine by means of a coupling device consisting of studs fixed to the extremities of the transporting-screws of the interchangeable magazine and taking into holes provided in the transporting-screws of the standard machine and of a dovetail-formed connectingpiece fixed to the standard machine adapted to be pushed into a recess suitably provided on the additional magazine. To render the coupling more effective,the standard machine may be provided with a latch, which when the additional magazine stands aside can be laid upon the same, where it suitably reposes in a recess of similar form. All parts of the additional magazine are constructed in such manner as easily to be coupled to the standard machine.
. The magazine which forms the object of my invention is carried by rods, which at their feet are provided with rollers. Thus an easy moving away of the magazine from one ma chine to another is rendered possible.
In the drawings similar letters denote similar parts throughout the different views, and my invention is represented in connection with a machine having two magazines; but evidently it can also be employed for machines having three or more magazines.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a linotypemachine and my additional magazine and keyboard coupled to it. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the machine seen from the right side.- Fig. 3 shows a plan section on the line a: 00, Fig. 1. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of the coupling device for the magazine. Fig. 6 represents a vertical elevation of the ends of the transporting-screws of both machines before they are coupled, the arrow indicating the manner of coupling them. Fig. 7 is a plan of the parts shown in Fig. 6. Figs. 8 and 9 illustrate in elevation and plan the connection of the transport-belts of both machines.

(1 is a transporting-screw for the matrix of the standard machine as usually employed in linotype-machines.
To this matrix-setting machine is annexed on the right-hand side an additional magazine, the detail parts of which are similar to those of the first machine, the essential feature of it being its capacity of being coupled to the standard machine.

keyboard ,0. by means of levers is in connection with the matrices accumulated in the channels of the magazine b, to which constantly new matrices are conveyed by the transporting-screws d and (Z lVhen the keys are'pressed down, the matrices become released and in known manner drop upon an endless transport-band h, which under the magazine I) is inclined and directed downward, so that the matrices of both tnagazines can be conveyed to the place of assemblage. 'lhe transport-belts 72, and h are connected together by the cover 7L2, covering the transportbelt 7?. and having between the belts suitably arranged a bottom part, so that the matrix when arrived at the lowest point of the belt h is pushed upon the bottom of 71 then slides along this bottom, and at the other end fallsupon the belt 71 of the standard machine.
The coupling of the transporting-screws and the additional magazine to the stand-- ard lin otype is effected by means of studs (1 fixed to the extremitiesof the transportingscrews 61 which studs engage with corresponding borings provided in the transporting-screws d of the standard machine. Of course the coupling can be effected inversely, so that the studs are attached to the transporting-screws (Z and engage into holes .or recesses provided in (1 The head of the rail (1 is provided with a recess, in form corresponding to a latch (l Figs. 6 and 7, movably fixed to the standard machine and adapted to be laid into the recess of the rail (1 thereby an effective coupling being obtained. Besides this, in order to secure the machine against lateral displacement the standard machine is provided with a dovetail- -formed piece d which when the additional magazine is pushed against the standard ma-' chine enters a recess 61 of the rail (1 Owing to these different couplings the transportingscrews of the interchangeable additional magazine are rigidly attached to the standard linotype. The distributing-rail (Z of the interchangeable magazine and that of the standard machine are advantageously so beveled that when the machines are coupled together they overlap each other and form one single rail.
As indicated in Figs. 1 and 3, the gearings of the transport-belts h and h are so formed as to be coupled together easily by means of the coupling device 70, which might be of any suitable construction.
The additional frame I) is suitably provided with looking devices 2', by means of which the magazine can be fixed in any desired position. It is evident that my improved magazine can be coupled to linotypes with more than two magazines and more than two keyboards.
Having thus fully described the nature of this invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is- 1. In a mttltiple magazine linotype-machine, the combination of the standard linotype-magazine I) having distributing mechanism including the distributing-rail and assembling mechanism with a suitably-supported additionalmagazine b adapted to be coupled to and uncoupled from the linotype-machine and provided with a special keyboard 0 and a special distributing-rail, the end of said rail and that of the ditributing-rail of the linotype-machine being correspondingly beveled so as to overlap each other and to form a single distributing-rail when the linotype-machine and the additional magazine are coupled, substantially as set forth.
2. In a multiple-magazine linotype machine, the combination of the standard linotype-magazine I) having distributing mechanism including the distributing-rail and assembling mechanism with a suitably-supported additional magazine 19 adapted to be coupled to and uncoupled from the linotype-machine and provided with a special keyboard 0 and a special distributing-rail, adapted to form with the distributing-rail of the linotypemachine one single distributing-rail, studs d fixed to the transporting-screws d and adapted to take into holes provided in the transporting-screws d of the linotype-machine, a connecting-piece d fixed to the latter and engaging into a recess of a rail d of the additional magazine, a coupling-piece is allowing to couple the gearing of a conveyor-belt of the standard machine to the gearing of the additional magazine, the whole for the purpose as set forth.
3. In a multiple-magazine linotypemachine, the combination of a standard linotype-machine with an additional magazine b adapted to be coupled to and uncoupled from the linotype-machine, conveyer-belts h h, a bridge spanning the space between the two belts hh and guides h supporting said bridge, substantially as described.
