Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOWRY W. STATLER, OF PIQUA, OHIO.
DUMPING-WAGON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 688,357, dated December 10, 1901.
Application filed September 28, 1901. Serial Nol 76,940. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that AI, LowRY W. STATLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Piqua, in the county of Miami and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful'Improveconsists of a wagon or car having its bed'com-v posed chiefly of sections'of inverted-V shape in cross-section, with openings between the bases ofv such sections to be covered by slats of a frame that slides in ways in the sides of the wagon or car.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown one embodiment of my invention.
In the drawings, Figure l is avertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan View, and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view.
In the several views, l denotes the inverted- V-shaped sections of the bottom or bed of the wagon. These sections are arranged at 'such distance apart as to allow thefree discharge of the load between the sections. The upper sides of these sections are preferably covered with sheet metal to protect the wood and facilitate the discharge of the load. The ends of the Wagon bottom or bed are furnished.
iron 4 along the lower edge of each of the opposite side pieces of the wagon-body. The Slat-frame is shown to be operated by means of a lever 5, fulcrumed near one side of the bottom or bed of the wagon and having a handle protruding at the opposite side. This lef ver is connected with the Slat-frame by means of a link 6, and to give strength to the connection the Slat-frame has secured to it metallic straps 7, thatextend from about the middle of the sides of theframe to the middle of the end thereof. The drawings show the discharge-openings closed. By pulling the free end of the lever toward the end of the wagon the slatsare all kpulled from under the spaces between the bed-sections, when the contents of the wagon will discharge by grav= ity through the openings. The inclination of the surfaces of the upper sides of the sections.
is such that the entire contents of the wagon will be discharged. Any suitable means can be employed to fasten the lever when the openings are closed.
The slat or valve frame can be operated by devices other than that shown in my drawings, and I therefore do not wish to be understood as confining myself to the particular means shown. l
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv 1 Ina dumping-wagon, a bed comprising separated parallel sections of inverted-V form in cross-section, and a frame composed of horizontally-arran ged parallel slats or valves with means whereby the same can be slid horizontally to open or close the openings between the inverted-.V-shapedsections, substantially as described.
2. In a dumping-wagon, a bed comprising separated parallel sections of inverted-V form in cross-section and -inclined portions at the ends of the bed, and a frame composed of horizontally-arranged parallel slats or valves with "means whereby the same can be slid horizontally to open or close the openings between the inverted-V-shaped and end sections, substantially as described.
3. In a dumping-wagon, a bed composed of inclined discharging-surfaces with dischargeopenin gs between them, a slat or valve frame adapted to open and close said dischargeopenings, and angle-irons secured to the lower edges of the sides of the wagon-body forming with said edges grooves or channels in which said slat or valve frame is supported and slides, substantially as described.
4. In a dumping-wagon, a bed comprising separated parallel sections'of inverted-V form in cross-section, and a frame composed of horizontally arranged parallel slats or valves joined rigidly together and adapted to be slid with a direct movement to open and close the openings between the aforesaid inverted-V- 16 shaped sections of the bottom, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature lin presence of two witnesses.
LOWRY W. STATLER. Witnesses:
