DRENCHING BIT.
(Application led Feb. 11` 1901.)
(No Model.)
UNTTED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
GEORGE IV. GREENFIELD, OF FOUNTAIN CITY, INDIANA.
DRENCHlNG-BIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 688,168, dated December 3, 1901. Application filed February 11, 1901. Serial No. 46,875. (No modeLl T0 @ZZ whom, it may concern:
' Be it known that I, GEORGE W. GREEN- FIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fountain City, in the county of Wayne and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Drenching-Bits,of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to drenching-bits, the object in view being to provide an article in the form of a bit adapted to be applied to the month of a horse or other animal and to contain a supply of medicine in liquid form, the device also having associated therewith means whereby any desired amount of medicine may be given to the animal and the amount visually indicated. By means of the construction hereinafter described the operator can tell the exact amount of medicine given to the animal, and the article is so constructed that there is no danger of losing any of the medicine and also no danger of injuring the animals mouth. The device may be readily operated bya single person and is especially useful for farmers, stablemen, and veterinarians.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel constrnction, combination, and arrangement hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a drenching-bit constructed in accordance with the present in vention, and Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section through the same.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in both iigu res of the drawings.
The bit proper consists of a tubular bar 1, having connected thereto at a point intermediateits ends a drenching-t'nbe 2, said tube communicating at its inner end with an opening 3 in the side of the tubular bar 1 and having its outer end flattened or made into elliptical form to provide a broad discharge-noz zle 4, said nozzle and drenching-tnbe being designed to lie upon the animals tongue in administering the medicine, while the tubular bar 1 extends across the tongue and is placed in the animals month similarly to the ordinary harness-bit. It may here be stated that any suitable arrangement of straps may be associated with the bit for holding the same securely on the animals head during the operation of administering the medicine. 55 One end of the tubular bar 1 is closed by a stopper or plug 5 to prevent the medicine from iiowing past the inlet-opening to the drenching-tube 2, and a sealing-cap 5 is also applied to the same endof the tubular bar. 6o The opposite end of the tubular bar is provided with a T-head 7 of tubularv form and having its opposite ends internally screw-` threaded.
8 designates a medicine holder or recepta- 65 cle, which may be of any preferred form, being shown for convenience as in the form ot' a hollow cylinder provided at one end with a neck 9 to receive a stopper 10 and by means of which the holder may be iilled with medi- 7o cine. The holder is provided at the end opposite the neck 9 with a combined nipple and valve seat 1l, which is externally screwthreaded and fitted into the upper end of the T-head 7.
A handle 12 is threaded into the lower end of the T-head 7and carries the valve 13, which is preferably conical and composed of rubber, so as to seal and close the nipple 1l, the eX- tremity of the nipple forming the seat for the 8o valve. The valve is provided with a stem 14, which enters a longitudinal opening 15 in the handle, and is provided with a cross-head 1G, forming a linger-grip, by means of Which the valve may be operated and unseated. The cross-head 10 plays in a longitudinal slot 17 in the handle, and the valve is held normally seated by means of a coil-spring 18, which encircles the valve-stem and is interposed between the inner end ot' the handle 9o and the rear face of the valve.
The holder S is provided in one side with a longitudinal slot or opening 19, into which is fitted a transparent panel 20, forming a visnal gage by means of which the operator can ascertain the exact amount of medicine administered to the animal.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that after the drenching-tube and tubular barhave been placed inthe animals month Ioo the operator by grasping the handle 12 and engaging the cross-head 16 with his fingers can unseat the valve for any desired length of time and allow the desired amount of medieine to pass from the holder'through the T- head and also through the tubular bar l into the drenching-tube 2, from which it is delivered through the nozzle 4 upon the animals tongue. In connection with the drenchingvbit it is desirable to employ some means for what I claim as new, and desire to' secure by Letters Patent, is-
A drenching-bit comprising a tubular bar having a tubular T-head and an outlet-opening, a drenching-tube in communication with the outlet-opening, a receptacle having a nip-V ple fitted to the upper end of the T-head, a handle having a longitudinal opening and slot and fitted to the lower end ofthe T-head and a spring-valve, seating against the nipple, having a stem sliding in the longitudinal opening of the handle and a linger cross-bar working in the slot of the handle.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
GEORGE W. GREENFIELD.
