Description

@citen iatrs @anni @ffice C. PHILIP WAGNER, O F NEW YORK, N. Y. Letters Patent No. 68,812, dated September 10, 1867,
IMPROVEMENT 1N PRESSES.
TO ALL Wl-IOM IT MAY'CONOERN:
Be it known that I, C. PHILIP WAGNER, ofthe city, county, and State of New'York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement on Presses, of which the following is a full, clem-,tand exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification, andin which- .Figure 1 represents a partly sectional side elevation of a lpress constructed vaccording to my improvement.
Figurel, an end sectional elevation of the same; and
Figure a plan or edge view seen from above of'one of the toothed segments with its operating' screw `used in'working the press. v i
vSimilar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Thenatureof my invention consists'in the combination with the oppositely moving platens; of-toothed-` segments, operating screw, and double toggle-joint motions for giving the necessary and simultaneous action to said platens ,-,likewiseoin an adjustable packing construction of the oneplaten.
This, my improved press, which is applicable to pressing cotton and a variety of purposes, includes as a. portion of' its working mechanism, certain details which are common to other presses,'bnt differently applied or combined.- Among suchv details are toggle-joints set in motion by toothed orworm segments receiving an operating scrcwbetween them, and forming whatghas been termed Va'close nut arrangement. y
Y Referring to the accompanying drawing, A are the guides or uprights of the press united by lowerframc pieces B and upper frame pieces C. Dis the driving-shaft, that may be operated by any suitable power, and
carries on its inner end a bevel-pinion, E, Which`gearsfwith and serves to operate a bevel-wheel, F, hung on a verticalV shaft, Gr, formcd'for a portion of its lengthv into a screw, H, having a fixed bearingor position for its rotation, andworlring between and gearing with worm or toothed segments I I carried by shafts ala, whichwork in hearings 66 attached to the uprights A. Each of' thesesegrnonts II connected with it o n opposite sides of a vertical line intersecting its shaft a, and on opposite faces of the segments, rods JJ', pivoted as at ce. These rods form toggle-joints with their respective platcns KL, the inner set of rods J being pivoted, aslat d,
to the lower platen K, and the outer vsei; of rods J being jointed, as at e,'to the upper platen L. This arrange# ment, it will be seen, gives a reverse action to the. platcns, raising theV lower while lowering the upper platcn,-
and vice versa, accordingly as the screw II is made to operate the segments II, and theol-rangement or, attachment of these toggle-joints is such that in working the platens towards each other to effect the pressure, they at iirst move rapidly and afterwards slowly, the importance of which for pressing occulent'and other substances.
will be readily understood. By causing both platens to move simultaneously in opposite directions, though it may be at different velocities, not only is the .work to be done accomplished more rapidly, say in half the time but va more perfect or gradual pressure from opposite sides secured, whilo by employing reversely operating toggle motions worked by the one screw to e'ect the same, a uniform action is obtained in'a simple, steady, and eiliclent manner. To facilitate the work or to adjust thc platens tothe work, it is advisable that one of them, say the upper. one, should be so constructed as that a'plauk'or planks may be interposed as a packing to vary, as it were1 the'tliickness of' the platen. For this purpose the lower or inner plate or boardf of the one pfaten L, carrying the cording andA pressing slats g, is provided with vertical screws t passing through the upper portion of said platen, and on to which are hand or nut-wheels, S, that, accordingly as they are turned to the right or left, worl up or down the boardf, closer to or further froxnthe main body of the platen, to admit ofv the insertion, tightening, or` removal of a plank or planks, as a packing interposed between said plate or boardfand` i main body of the platen. p
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. -Thc combination of the screw H, toothed sc'ments I I, toggle-joints JJ', and platen's KL, all being C arranged for operation together essentiallyas herein set fort '2. The inner pressing-board or' platef, arranged adjustably with relation to the body of the pl'atcn substantially as and for the purpose set forth. Y s
C. PH. WAGNER.
