HOWVARD D. ALLEN, OF TERRYVILLE, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO EAGLE LOCK 00., OF TERRYVILLE, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION.
DESK-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 688,052, dated December 3, 1901.
Application filed June 17, 1901.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HOWARD D, ALLEN, of Terryville, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have in vented a new and useful Improvement in Desk-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the numerals of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a viewin front elevation of a lock constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a view showing the application of the lock to a desk, which is shown in section; Fig. 8, abroken view,in vertical section, showing the application of the detachable cylinder 0r key-guide to the lock-case; Fig. 4, a detached view, in side elevation, showing the detachable cylinder or key-guide and its retaining-nut.
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of desk-locks provided with detachable cylinders or key-guides, the object being to produce a lock of thischaracter which shall at once be extremely simple and durable in construction and convenient to apply without marring the desk.
With these ends in view my invention consists in a desk-lock having certain details of construction, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention I provide the lock with a detachable cylinder or key-guide comprisinga circularhead 2, a hub 3, a shank 4, and a threaded stem 5, which forms its inner end, the said head, hub, shank, and threaded stem being formed with a longitudinally-arranged keyrslot 6 and the said head being provided with an annular cap 7. The said shank 4. corresponds in length to the thickness of the lock-case 8 and its cover 9, the said cover being formed with a circular opening 10 and the case with a corresponding opening 11, registering with the opening 10. A nut 12, formed with a slot 13, is adapted to be applied to the threaded stem 5.
In applying my improved lock the desk 14. is provided with a mortise 15 for the reception of the lock and with two registering holes 16 and 17 for the reception of the hub 3 of Serial No. 64,776. (No model.)
the cylinder or key-guide and the nut 12. After the lock has been introduced into the mortise 15 the cylinder or key-guide is inserted through the hole 16 and pushed inward 5 5 until its head 2 rests against the outer surface of the case, at which time the hub 3 will occupy the hole 16 and the shank 4: extend through the lock-case with the threaded stem 5 projecting into the hole 17. The nut 12 is now inserted into the hole 17 and applied to and screwed over the stem forming the inner end of the cylinder or key-guide until it is brought to a bearing upon the outer face or back of the lock-case, as shown in Fig. 3. When the lock is thus assembled, the shoulder between the hub and shank will preferably bear against the cover of the case, while the inner end of the nutwill bear against the shoulder between the shank and threaded stem. To remove the lock, it is only necessary to apply a screw-driver to the nut and remove it from the threaded stem of the cylinder or keyguide,'whicl1 may then be pulled away from the lock-case, after which the same may be lifted out of its mortise.
My improved desk-lock, having a detachable key-guide or cylinder, is extremely sim= ple and durable in construction and every way easy and convenient to apply and remove.
It is apparent that in carrying out my invention some changes may be made from the construction herein shown and described, and I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the precise details shown, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention;
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a desk-lock, the combination with the lock-case, of a detachable cylinder or key guide extending from front to back through the case with which it engages to prevent it from longitudinal movement inward, and retaining means applied and attached to the inner end of the said cylinder or key-guide and bearing against the outer face or back of the case, whereby the said cylinder or keyguide is held against longitudinal movement outward. I
2. In a desk-lock, the combination with the lock proper, of a cylinder or key-guide comprising a head, a hub, a shank, and a threaded stem adapted to be passed through the case, and a nut for application to the projecting threaded stem, whereby the cylinder or keyguide is held in place.
' 3. In a desk-lock, the combination with the case and cover thereof, the said parts being formed with corresponding openings, of a cylinder or key-guide comprising a circular head, a hub, a shank, and a threaded stem, the shank of said cylinder or head being adapted-to pass through the said openings, at which time the hub and head will be on one side of the lock-case and the threaded stem on the other side thereof, and a nut adapted to be applied to the said threaded stem for holding the cylinder in place in one direction While it is held in place in the opposite direction by the shoulder formed between the said hub and stem.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
HOWARD D. ALLEN.
