SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 687,654, dated November 26, 1901.

' Be it known that I, WVILLIAM RUBIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of South Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State'of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cans for Preserving Solid Food, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to the manufacture of tin cans especially adapted for packing preferably solid foods, such as meats. Each can is constructed of two sections of substantially the same depth, so that when the'sections are separated they can be used separately to contain the food packed therein, each section being stamped or drawn from an integral piece 'of sheet metal and one of the sections provided with a peculiar means for securing the sections together and providing for the separation of the same.

Theinvention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations,and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter described and specifically claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which the figure is a side elevation of the invention with parts broken away and in section.

a indicates the lower section of the can, and 1) indicates the upper section, Each of these sections is stamped or drawn from an integral sheet of metal and comprises continuous side walls, and in the case of the section a a bottom wall a, and in the case of the section b a top wall 17, which may be provided with an opening b therein, adapted to be sealed by a cover I) in the usual manner. Through this opening, when one is provided, the contents of the can are introduced during the actof packing the goods; but it is obvious that said opening may be dispensed with and each of the sections be filled through the ends, which are contiguous when the sections are together to form a complete can, said fllling operation of course taking place before the sections are secured together. The adjacent or contiguous ends of the sections a and I) fit one within the other and are sealed to form a complete can. This is efiected by an annular oifset shoulder or flange 0, form ing a tearing-strip and formed integral on one of the sections, preferably the section b,

and arranged to inclose the upper section a. This offset shoulder or flange c is, when the two sections are brought together to form a complete can, soldered around the section a to form a hermetic connection, and it is provided with a weakening or tearing line 0' in the metal forming said section, which is formed in the act of stamping or drawing the section, said weakening or tearing line cbe ing commensurate with the shoulder on the connection between the section b and the offset flange or tearing-strip c. This offset flange or strip 0 is provided with a diagonallyprojected lip 0 integral therewith and designed to furnish a lip or projection with which a suitable key of the usual slotted type may be engaged when it is desired to separate the two sections of the can. The sepa- 'ration of the sections is effected by engaging the key with the lip c arid tearing the olfset shoulder or flange off of the can, which involves breaking the solder connecting the shoulder or flange with the section a and also severing the said flange along the tearingline 0, which connects the strip 0. To facilitate the tearing away of the flange c, I impress on the flange or strip a diagonal score 0 which is in line with the lip or projection c and which leads from-the lip or projection to the weakening or tearing line 0', after which it follows said line around the can and enables the ofiset flange or strip 0 to be completely removed.

I am aware that it is not new to form a can in two sections of substantially the same depth, which sections are permanently secured together without means of separation, and I am also aware that it is not new to provide a tearing-strip in the lid or cover of a box in order to remove the lid or cover from said can or box when desired; but I am not aware that it is old to construct a canin two sections of substantially the same depth and to provide on one of the edges of said sections contiguous to the edge of the other section an offset flange or shoulder which constitutes a tearing-strip, and to project the edge of the other section beneath said offset flange and solder the two sections together and to separate the sections by ripping or tearing off the said offsetting flange or shoulder which constitutes a scoring and tearing strip.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A can formed of two comparatively deep separable sections of substantially the same depth, so that when the sections are separated two complete can-sections are secured, each designed to hold food, one of which sections is provided at the end contiguous to the other section with an integral annular offset flange forming a tearing-strip and a means for receiving the edge of the other section, said flange being provided with an annular weakenin g or tearing line, and connected with said other section by soldering said oitset flange or strip to the adjacent end of said other section to connect the two together, said offset flange or strip being removable by tearing or ripping it away along the annular tearing-line whereby to separate the sections, substantially as described.

2. A can formed of two comparatively deep separable sections of substantially the same depth, so that when the two sections are separated, two complete can-sections are secured each designed to hold the food packed in each section, one of which sections is provided at the end contiguous to the other section with an integral annular offset flange or shoulder for receiving the edge of the other section provided with an annular tearing or weakening line, and also formed with an integral lip or projection also provided with a scored or tearing line which connects with the annular tearing-line, said section being connected with the first-named section by soldering the said oflset flange or strip thereto, the said offset flange or strip being removable by grasping the projecting lip and tearing along the scored portion and along the annular tearingline whereby the sections will be separated and access afforded to each of the removable covers thereof, substantially as described.
