RAIL-JOINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 687,510, dated November 26, 1901. Application filed August 10, 1901. Serial No. 71592. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern;
Beitknown thatLMcCLELLEN WOODRING, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at California, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a speci fication, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in rail-joints, and .relates more particularly to that class wherein the use of nuts and bolts is entirely dispensed with.
The invention has for its object the provision of novel means whereby two sections of rails are securely joined together; furthermore, wherein the rails are rigidly and firmly secured, preventing the rails from spreading or creeping.
The invention further aims to entirely dispense with fish plates or other fastening means and to construct the meeting ends of the rails so that they will efiectually interlock with one another.
A still further object of my invention is to construct a rail-joint of the above-described classthat will be extremely simple in con-- struction, strong, d urable, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objectsin view the invention consists in the novel combina tion and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several Views, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of myimproved, rail-joint as it appears when applied in position. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the meeting ends of the rails, showing the same disconnected. Fig. 3 is a top plan View thereof. Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of the meeting ends of one of the rails.
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 indicates the rails, and 2 represents the crossties.
The reference-numeral 3 indicates projecting tongues which are mortised and are adapted to interlock with one another. These tongues 3 are approximately triangular in cross-section and are seated in recesses 4, formed on the opposite sides of the meeting ends of the rails. The tongue 3 of one railsection will interlock and seat itself in a recess 4 of the opposite rail-section.
The reference-numeral 5 indicates a longitudinal slot formed in the recess 4, adapted to receive the side of the triangular-shaped tongue.
The reference- numerals 6 and 7 indicate enlarged portions formed in the web of the rails, extending from the tread to the base thereof, thereby adding strength and durability to the rails at their meeting ends.
The manner of joining the rails together will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the ac companying drawings.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a rail-joint, the combination with the rails, of enlarged portions made integral with the webs thereof, tongues triangular in crosssection carried by said rail-sections, the said enlarged webs having openings formed therein of a shape corresponding to said tongues, said openings extending through the said enlarged web,the apex of said triangular tongues extending into the said web-openings, substantially as described.
2. In a rail-joint, the combination with the rails of enlarged portions made integral with the webs thereof, tongues triangular in crosssection formed on said enlarged web and of less width than said web, the said enlarged web portions having openings formed therein adjacent to said tongues and of a shape corresponding to said tongues and extending through the enlarged web portion, the apex of said triangular tongues extending into the said web-openings,substantially as described.
