To all whom it may concern.-

v Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. G. MAT- THIESgt citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protective Devices for Windows, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to protective devices for windows provided with sliding sashes when such windows are open, and has for its object to provide a device which will furnish the desired protection automatically as the window is opened and will fold out of the way when the window is closed.

Another object is to provide a folding device which may be attached, preferably, on the outside of the lower part of any windowsash and to the window-sill, especially of windows opening from rooms occupied by children or other helpless persons, and which when the window is raised will prevent such persons getting or falling out of such windows.

These objects are accomplished by the use of a folding device one end of which is secured to the sash of a window and the other end to a fixed point, preferably the sill of such window, the said device being guided, pref erably, by recesses in the window-frame.

In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, Figure l is apere spective view of a window, window-frame, and sashes, showing the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-sectional view of the same. Fig. '3 is an enlarged detail view of the invention partly open, and Fig. A is a detail view of another form of the invention.

Similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.

Preferably the device is constr ucted of horizontal rods 2, having their opposite ends connected by links 3, adapted to open out or fold together. The ends 4 of the alternate rods 2, beginning from the rod at each end of the device, project beyond the link 3, and when the device is in place slide in a guide 5 on the window-frame 6, which guide preferably comprises the recess in which the sash unconnected with the device normally slides. At one end of the device the end links 3 of the series are pivotally mounted on brackets 7,

secured to the window-sash 8, and at the other end of the device the end links are mounted in a similar manner on brackets 9, secured to a fixed point, preferably the window-sill 10. The links 3 may be of rigid structure, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or of flexible structure--as, for instance, of chain-links.

The operation of the device is as follows: When the window-sash 8 is raised, the links 3, connecting the rods 2, open until the sash 8 has reached its extreme height, when they are straightened out, the ends projecting into the recess, in which the upper sash normally slides, serving to guide the device in its upward movement.

Instead of the rods 2 and the links 3 other forms may be used-as, for instance, cables, such as chains l1to connect the ends of the rods 2 and secure the device to the window sash and sill.

By the side guides the device is prevented from sagging when only partially open and serves at all times its purpose to prevent a person falling through the opening.

Having described my invention, I claim 1. A protective device for windows comprising a series of links on each side of said window, having the lower ends of said series secured to fixed points of the window-frame, and the upper ends of said series secured to the window-sash, whereby the operation of said links is controlled by the movement of said sash, and members extending crosswise said window, every two pairs of said links having as their pivots one of said crosswise members.

A protective device for windows comprising a chain on each side of said window, oneend of each chainsecured to a fixed point of the window-frame and the other end of such chain securedto the window-sash, whereby the operation of said chain is controlled by the window-sash, such chains having on larged links at intervals, and members extending crosswise said window, the opposite ends of said members passing through said enlarged links and projecting into guideways on the window-frame.
