This invention relates to a combined stationindicator and advertiser for use in transportation-vehicles, such as street-cars or steamrailway cars, or in station-buildings or else- Where.

The object is to provide means whereby advertising-signs may be displayed at intervals or repeatedly while station-signs may be displayed, so that when station signs or indications are read the attention of the observer will naturally be attracted also to the advertising-signs, an object being to provide such advertising facilities at a small cost and with no expense for operation, and a principal object being to provide means whereby not only the advertisements, but station-names also, may be easily changed without waste of valuable material.

Referring to the drawings, in which similar reference-letters indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of apparatus illustrating my invention as preferably constructed, the front cover or hinged door inclosing the operating part-s in a case being shown in its open position; Fig.2, a perspective view of the same with the door closed; Fig. 3, a vertical transverse sectional View showing the main operating elements, and Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7 detail views of parts that will be fully described hereinafter.

In construction I provide la case A of suit able design, having a front B, preferably hinged to the case. In the upper portion of the case is a reel or roller C, suitably mounted revolubly, and in the lower portion is preferably a roller or idler C',suitably journaled. An endless flexible web or belt D extends over the reel Gand also below the idler C', if it be employed. The reel C has a suitable number of notches E, and the web has a suitable number of gage-bars F attached thereto, adapted to drop into the notches E, so that the web cannot slip, but shall be positively driven by the reel if the latter be rotated, the web being indefinitely long and hanging loosely upon the reel. The web D is provided with a series of label-holders Gr for retaining detachable labels or signs. A ratchet-Wheel His operatively connected with the reel O or toits shaft and may be rotated a suitable distance at a time by means of a pull-bar I, having a spring-yoke .I engaging the teeth of the wheel and having a stem K extending through the case A.

If the two sections be made separately, the sectionfwill be provided with the label-holders, while on the section e the station-names may be permanently applied thereto, as by painting them thereon; but I preferably form the web ofvsufticient width to include both sections, in which case the label-holders extend entirely across the web, each holder either as one piece or as two pieces, so that the station-names may be applied to removable pieces of suitable paperor other material, forming labels L, which will be convenient should it be necessary to change some of the station-names. The labels M may contain advertisements, that may be readily replaced by others, printed uponslips of paper and retained by the holders G.

In the door B is a sight-opening N, through which each station-name, one at a time as the web may be moved, may be read, and the Y door has also a sight-opening O, so arranged that as much of the advertising matter on the section fas may be desired may be seen therethrough, each opening being preferably provided with a glass plate. Each advertisement may thus be read for alonger period of IOO.

v sign, as may also the label-holders G; but I preferably attach one to the other, whereby each may be made of lighter material and be more easily attached to the web than when made separately, the bar F being composed of a thin narrow plate struck up at the ends to form cylindrical projections h 7L, extending beyond the edges of the Web to engage the notches in the reel, the functional notches in the present case beingin end plates of the reel. Each holder Gis composed of athin narrow plate of spring metal and has teeth i struck up at the dat side thereof,that is placed toward the bar F, the web D being between the bar and the holder-plate, the latter having rivet-holes 7c, and the bar and holder are secured to the web and to each other by rivets Z, so that the edges ofthe holder may normally press against the web and the teeth 'i slightly penetrate the surface of the Web and extend through a label when placed under the spring edge of the holder.

The drawings illustrate the practical utility of the invention. The stem K may be pulled down to a suitable stop-gage, when the reel C will be partially rotated, moving the web D a corresponding distance and displaying a label L next to that which may have been displayed and also changing the positions at the sight-opening O ot' the labels M, so that each ent, is'- 1. .In a combined station-indicator and advertiser, the combination with the reel and the Web, of the combined gage-bars andllabelholders consisting of the bar having the end portions thereof turned over and engaging the reel, and the spring-plate secured to said bar, the said holders being secured to the Web, and the labels retained by the said holders.
