Be it known that I, JOHN SPEIRS, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Jersey City,in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Bolt, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a bolt capable of being applied to a door or other swinging support, either right or left,`
and which will act to lock'the door closed and to automatically prevent the door from being opened beyond a certain distance until the bolt is purposely unlatched from the inside of the door.
A further purpose of the invention is to so construct the bolt that the door may be held locked therebyin a more orless partiallybpen position and also to provide a bolt which will be simple, strong, and economic and which may be attached to the moldings or doorjambs, the bolt being equally applicable to the doors of vessels as to the doors of dwell-` ings or outhouses.
The invention consists in the novel con? struction and combination of the several parts,- as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indi# cate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved bolt applied to a door or door-jamb, the door being closed and the bolt being also closed and locked in its closed position. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken substantially on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 in Fig. 1, illustrating thedoor locked by the bolt as in a partially-open position. Fig'. 4 is a plan view of the box-section of the bolt which is applied tothe door. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken practically on the line 5 5 of Fig. 6. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal vertical section through the box-support, taken practically on the line 6 6 of Fig. 4. Fig. 7 is a transverse section through the said box-support, taken practically on the line 7 7 of Fig. 4. The'boX-'support A, which is adapted for application to the jamb B of a door, may be applied to the molding on the j amb, as shown in Fig. 1, and to that end the bottom edge 10 tion of this depression au aperture 12 is formed, usually surrounded by a collar 13. Preferably the edge or side of the box-casing A which is presented to the door C is provided with a coucaved central recess 14. A bolt 15 is made to enter the aperture 12 in theboxsupport A and is held to turn in the said aperture, the bolt 15 having an elongated head 16 at its inner end, which head extends beyond the front face of the box-support A, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 8, and the members of the inner bifurcated end 17 of a hasp 17 are pivotally attached to the end portions of the head 16 by means of a suitable pin 18. This hasp is provided with a longitudinal slot 19, which extends from a point near its outer end through its inner end, producing the members 17 a, heretofore referred to, as is best shown in Fig. 1; but that portion 19* of the slot 19 adjacent to the pivoted and hinged end of the hasp 17 is much wider than the other portion of the slot, as is also shown in Fig. 1. The outer end portion of the hasp 17, as is illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, is more or less outwardly curved or convexed, while the remaining portion ot' the hasp is practically straight except at its inner end, Where the said hasp is ordinarily curved in an outward direction to form a finger-hold. Teeth 20 are produced upon the outer face of the hasp 17 or that face which is opposed to the door C, and these teeth are'in longitudinal series at each side of the narrower portion of the slot 19, as is best shown in Fig. 2. It will be observed thatthe hasp 17 has not only a hinged connection with its boxsupport A, but likewise a pivotal connection, so that the hasp may be used on jambs right or left.

An additional box-support E is to be attached to the door by screws or otherwise. Guide projections 22 are located upon the front face of the said box-support E at each of its sides, as shown particularly in Figs. 4 and 5, between which guides upon the outer portion of the said box-support E a slide 24 is mounted to travel. This slide 24 carries at its outer end an arm 25, which is at an angle to the slide and extends therefrom in direction of the hasp at more or less of an angle and outwardly beyond the outer face of the box-support E, as shown in Fig. 5, terminating at its free end in aball 26 or other form of enlargement.
The slide 24 is provided with an essentially heart-shaped opening 27, as is clearly shown in Fig. 5, and in this opening a cam 28 is mounted to turn, the cam beingintegral with or attached to a stem 29, provided with a nut 30, which stem is free to turn in an aperture in the outer face of the box-support E, adapted for attachment to the door, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7. At the outer face ot' the cam 2S, and preferably integral therewith, a disk 3l is formed, the inner face of which disk is oppositethe outer face of the slide 24. This disk prevents the slide 24 from leaving the box-support E, and yet the said slide has free end movement. At the outer end of the stem 29 a button 32 is formed, adapted to enter the slot 19 in the hasp 17. By turning the button 32 the slide 24 is carried inward or outward from the front edge of the box-support E for the door and the ball or knob 26 is moved inward or outward over a sharp edge or knife-point 33, formed at the outer front edge of the said box-support E, as shown in lFigs. 2 and 6.
A sliding auxiliary bolt D is mounted upon the box-support E, which auxiliary bolt when a door having the device applied is closed is employed to lock the door in its closed position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the auxiliary bolt entering a suitable opening in the boxsupport A, attached to the door-j amb otherwise this auxiliary bolt D is not employed.
When the door is closed, the ball or knob 26 lies within the enlarged portion 19a of the slot 19 in the hasp 17, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the hasp lies close to the outer or front face of the boxsupport E, applied to the door between the guide-lugs 22 for the slide 24; but the hasp may extend to the side edges of the said box-support E.
When the door is in its closed position and the auxiliary bolt D is withdrawn, should the' door be opened it cannot be swung farther than the length of the slot 19 in the hasp, as upon opening the door the knob or ball 26 immediately travels in the said slot 19. Should it be desirable to open the door to a certain extent and hold the door in such position, the knob or ball is withdrawn inward by turning the button. 32, and the hasp 17 will be drawn to the box-support E to such an extent that the most convenient notches 2O in ythe hasp will engage with the knife-'point 33,
as shown in Fig. 3, thus lockingthe hasp to the box-support E, from which it cannot be disengaged until the button 32 is again turned, and said button can be turned only at the inside of the door. v
It will thus be observed that a convenient safety-bolt is provided which will enable a door to be locked in a closed position or locked in a partially-open position -and which will prevent a door from being opened at any time beyond a certain extent when the occupant of an apartment so desires. If it be not desirable to employ the bolt and one wishes to permit the door to be opened as widely as desired at will, the button 32 is turned parallel with the slot 19 in the hasp 17. The hasp 17 is then swung upon its hinge and is permitted to drop to a vertical position, due to the pivotal connection of the hinged support of the hasp with the jamb box-support A.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a bolt, a support adaptedfor attachment to a door-jamb, a hasp having pivotal and hinged connection with said support, which hasp is provided with a longitudinal slot transversely enlarged adjacent to its hinged connection with the support, that portion of the hasp at which the enlargement in the slot occurs being more or less curved, a support adapted for attachment to a door, a slidable arm extending from the said support outward at an angle therefrom, terminating in an enlargement capable of entering the wider portion of the slot in the said hasp but incapable of passing through the narrower portion of the said slot, and a cam device for operating the said sliding arm, as set forth.
2. In a `bolt, a support adapted for attachment to a door-jamb, a hasp having pivotal and hinged connection with said support, which hasp is provided with a longitudinal slot transversely enlarged adjacent to its hinged connection with the support, that portion of the hasp at which the enlargement in the slot occurs being more or less curved, a support adapted for attachment to a door, a slidable arm extending from the said support outward at anv angle therefrom, terminating in an enlargement capable of entering the wider portion of the slot in the said hasp but incapable of passing through the narrower portion of said slot, means substantially as described, for operating the said slidable arm, and an auxiliary bolt carried by the support adapted for attachment to the door, the said bolt being adapted to enter the support which is adapted for attachment to a door-jamb.
3. In a bolt, the combination, with a support adapted for attachment to a door-jamb, a hasp having hinged connection with the said support and provided with a longitudinal slot having increased width at the pivotal portion of the hasp, the inner face of the hasp at each side of the narrower portion of the IOO IIO
slot therein being provided with a series of teeth, of a support adapted for attachment to a door, a slide mounted on the support ar- I ranged for attachment to the door, means for l imparting end movement to the said slide, a beveled edge formed upon the outer end of the su pport which is adapted for attachment to a door, and an arm extending from 'said slide'above the said beveled edge at an out.- Ward inclination, the arm being provided with an enlargement at its end, capable of entering the Wider portion of the slot -in the hasp but incapable of passing through the narrower portion of said slot, as and for the purpose set forth.
