UNITED STATES PAT T OFFICE. 1
JOHN DANIEL KINNEY, OF VIL LA RICA, GEORGIA.
FERTILIZER-DISTRIBUTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 687,317, dated November 26, 1 901.
' Application filed August 21, 1900. Serial No. 27,616. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
a citizen of the United States, residing at Villa Rica, in the county of Carroll and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Fertilizer-Distributer, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved fertilizer-distributer; and it consists in the peculiar construction and novel combination of devices hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a fertilizer-distributer embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of a portion of the hopper, the shoe, the drop-spout, and the furrowopener. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the shaking-arm for the shoe and the rocking tappet.
In the embodiment of my invention the beam 1 is provided with a standard 2, carrying furrow-opening plow or shovel 3, and to the rear end of the beam are attached the handles 4. A drop-spout 5 is secured on the rear end of the beam, and the operating-wheel 6 is journaled in bearings 7 near the front end of the beam. Said wheel 6 is provided on one side with a concentric series of tappetpins 8, which project therefrom. A pair of braces 9 connect the handle-bars 4 and the beams, and between the said braces is secured the hopper 10, in which fertilizer is carried. A shaking-shoe 11 is disposed under the hopper and suspended therefrom by a pair of depending straps or hangers 12, between which the shaking-shoe is pivoted. Said shakingshoe extends rearward and is inclined downward and discharges into the upper end of the drop-spout 5. To the front end of the shaking-shoe is secured an arm 13, which projects forward therefrom and is adapted to rest upon the uppermost of the series of tappet-pins 8 of operating-wheel 6. A rocking tappet 14 is pivoted to the arm 13 and is provided with a forward-extending arm 15, having on its under side a wear-block 16, which is successively engaged by the tappet-pins 8, and said rocking tappet is provided with a rearward-extending arm 17, which is adapted to bear upon the arm 13, as at 18.
It will be understood that when the fertilizer-distributer is in operation the rocking tappet 14 by the engagement of its wearblock 16 with the tappet-pins 8 alternately raises and drops the arm 13, thereby vibratin g the shoe 11, and hence fertilizer conveyed to the shoe from the hopper is by the vibratory motion of the shoe delivered to the dropspout 5 and is dropped from the latter into the furrow in rear of the furrow-opening plow or shovel-3. When the machine is backed or drawn rearward for a few paces, as is necessary from time to time during the operation thereof, as when starting a'row, the arm 13 rests idly on the uppermost tappets 8 and the wheel 6 is free to rotate rearwardly, the rocking tappet 14 turning downwardly at its ends to permit the wear-block 16 to clear the tap pet-pins.
In order to regulate the quantity of fertilizer supplied to the drill, I provide a gageplate 19, which is secured on the rear side of the hopper by a bolt 20. Said gage-plate has an adjusting-slot 21, in which the bolt 20 opcrates, and the lower end of the gage-plate is disposed between the sides of the shakingshoe 11. Hence by adjusting the gage-plate vertically'the space between the lower side thereof and the bottom of the shaking-shoe will be increased or diminished at will, and hence the quantity of fertilizer discharged from the shaking-shoe may be readily predetermined.
It will be understood that when the arm 13 is in engagement with the tappets 8 of the wheel and the machine is being backed the front end of the shoe 11 is lowered and its rear end raised and in contact with the gage-plate 19, which thus also acts as a gate, said gageplate and shoe coacting when the machine is being backed to cut off the flow of fertilizer from the hopper 10.
Having thus described my invention, I claim In a fertilizer-distributer, the combination with a frame, of a wheel carrying a series of tappet-pins, a hopper supported by the frame, a shoe mounted for rocking movement beneath the hopper, an arm having one end rigidly secured to the shoe and its other end normally disposed above the tappet-pins, an adjustable gate arranged at the rear of the hopper and normally out of contact with the shoe ICO shoe to be moved upward into contact with the gate cutting off thereby the feed of fertilizer, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN DANIEL KINNEY.
