Description

N0. 687,20l. Patehied Nov. 26, I901.
J. T. COWLEY.
PNEUMATIC DESPATCH TUBE APPARATUS.
(Application filed Mar. 15, 1901.
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES T. COWLEY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
. PN EUMATIC-DESPATCH-IUBE APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 687,201, dated November 26, 1901. Application filed March 15, 1901. Serial No. 51,402. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES T. OowLEY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and usefulImprovementsinPneumatic-Despatoh- Tube Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in pneumatic-despatch apparatus; and its object is to provide an improved holder for holding the carriers and for bringing them into alinement with the despatchtube for transmission.
My invention consists of certain novel features hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a construction embodying my invention, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the carrierholder and a portion of the despatch-tube. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the carrier-holder and a portion of the despatch-tube. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the carrier-ho1der.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the several views.
A represents a carrier-holder journaled in the opposite side frames A on bearings A and held in its upright position, as shown in Fig. 2, by the spring A secured at its upper end to the eye A on the holder A and at its lower end to the cross-bar A connecting the opposite side frames A. On the lower end of this holder is mounted a valve A adapted to cover the open end of the despatch-tube A when the holderAis in the position shown in Fig. 2, but to move back with the holder and uncover the open end of the despatchtube A when the holder is in the position shown in Fig. 2, (dotted lines,) when the carrier will drop into the open end of the tube A The holderA is provided with a handle A for moving the holder to the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2, for the transmission of the carriers. As shown, the despatch-tube A extends through the counter A and continues downwardly to the opposite end of the line.
Having thus described the nature of my invention and set forth a construction embodying the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a pneumatic-despatch apparatus, a despatch -tube, a movable -carrierholder, means for supporting said holder, a valve carried by said holder and normally closing said tube, and yielding means for holding said valve normally in positionto close said tube.
2. In a pneumatic-despatch apparatus, a despatch tube, a pivoted carrier holder, means for supporting said holder, a valve carried by said holder and normally closing said tube, and a spring for holding said valve in position to close the tube.
3. In a pneumatic-despatch apparatus, a despatch tube, a pivoted carrier holder,
means for supporting said holder, a valve carried by said holder and normally closing said tube, a spring for holding said valve in position to close the tube, and a handle for moving said holder to despatch a carrier.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 18th day of February, A. D. 1901.
JAMES T. COWLEY.
