To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN J. SOHERMAOK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cork-Pullers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to certain improvements in cork-pullers, the object of which is to provide therein an adjustable stop to limit the extent to which the cork is withdrawn from the bottle and to force the cork ofi of the corkscrew when the limit is reached.

To such end the invention consists in certain features of novelty fully described and claimed below.

The invention is illustrated in the drawings by means of four figures, of whicl1- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a complete puller; Fig. 2, a similar view with the upper part of the casing cut away to show the interior. Fig. 3 is a transverse longitudinal section of the lower portion of the puller in line 3 3 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow 3, and Fig. 4 is an oblique section l0oking downward upon the plane 4 4 of Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings, A is a suitable casing provided with a bracket a to secure it to a counter or shelf, and laterally-projecting arms a a between which is pivoted an operating-lever B, having a handle I) at one end and a segment I) at the other end. A sliding rack O is guided within the case, and a corkscrew D journaled in the lower portion of the rack, so as to rotate freely therein and be reciprocated longitudinally thereby. A nut E, threaded to the corkscrew, is guided in the lower part of the casing and is held against rotation by a screw 6, working up and down in a slot e. Beneath the nut is a perforated stop or stripping block F, longitudinally guided in the casing and provided with oppositely-exten ding pins or lugs f f adapted to slide up and down in the slot e and in an opposite slot 6 These slots are connected at the bottom by lateral connections as c with two other slots 6 e, preferably parallel with the slots 6 e and shorter than the latter. The pins ff may be turned into either the slots e c or the slots c e, and the position of the stripping-block with reference to these slots will determine the upward limit of its movement. The normal position of the parts is shown in Fig. 1.

To operate the puller, a corked bottle is placed under the lower portion of the puller, as seen in Fig. 3, and the handle 11 drawn forward in the direction of the arrow seen in Fig. 1, forcing the corkscrew into the cork. A reverse movement draws the cork from the bottle until the stripping-block Freaches the upper limit of its movement, when said block forces the cork from the corkscrew, the cork rotating the latter in so doing.

I do not limit myself to the details of the construction shown, as they are to a certain extent immaterial to the invention, broadly considered.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with a suitable frame, of a rotatable corkscrew reciprocating therein, a guided nut adapted to rotate the corkscrew, a stripping-block below the nut, a series of stops on the frame and engaging devices upon the block adapted to be brought into position for engagementwith said stops to vary the longitudinal range of movement of the block in the frame; substantially as described.

2. The combination with a hollow casing, A, having the slots, 6', e e 6, connected at the bottom, the pairs of slots, e, 6 and e e being of different heights, of a corkscrew, D, a nut, E, threaded to the corkscrew and guided in the casing and a perforated stripping-block, F, having suitable pins to guide it in the slots; substantially as described.

3. The combination with a suitable frame, of a rotatable corkscrew reciprocating longitudinally therein, a longitudinallyguided nut adapted to rotate the corkscrew, a stripping block arranged between the nut and. the cork son and State of Illinois, this 13th day of and having alirnited movement in the frame, April, A.
