The fastener members are somewhat longer than thebag is wide, and hence the end portions of these members project beyond the sides of the bag, preferably for equal distances, as shown by Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive.

In using my invention the bag'is opened to the condition shown by Figs. 1 and 2, and the fastener members are thereby separated, so that they will lie on opposite sides of the mouth, and thus permit the merchandise to be easily introduced into the bag and without the members of the fastoner. After the desired quantity of material has been deposited in the bag the sides 8 9 are drawn together, so as to bring the two members'ti'and 7 of the fastener into quite close relation, substantially as represented by Fig. 3. The bag-month having been closed, the top edge of said bag and the fastener member 7 are turnedor folded over the side 8 of p the bag in order to bring the member 7 into close relation and immediately alongside of the member 6, substantiallyas represented by Fig. 4. The unoccupied top portion of the bag may now be rolled upon itself one or more times in order to take up the surplus amount of material in the bag and to bring the members of the fastener within the rolled portion of the bag-mouth; but-these members 6 7are not wholly housed within the bag, because the ends of said members project beyond the bag, as shownby the drawings. The operation of rolling the bag-mouth in the manner described serves to eifectually close the article, and in order to securethe bag in this condition it is only necessary for theoperator to bend the projecting end portions of the fas tener members in opposite directions and upon the rolled mouth of the bag, as clearly shown by Fig. 5.

. As the bent ends of the fastenor members will retaintheir positions, owing to the presence of the ductile metal in the sheaths of the members, it is evident that the rolled bag-mouth cannot accidentally open of its own accord, and hence the bag will be securely closed.

' From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it will be seen that the improved fastener means does not 'in any way interfere with the ordinary usage of the bag. Such fastener is extremely cheap in construction, and the bag can thus be manufactured without appreciable increase in the cost, because machinery can be adapted to produce and assemble the parts of the bag in. the required position.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new isa Asa new article of manufacture, a bag provided with an attached fastener forming an inseparable part thereof, said' fastener consisting of straight members secured to opposite sides of the bag and extending continuously across the same, one fastener member lying at the edge of. the bag-mouth and the other fastener member arranged below the plane of, and parallel to,the first-named member both members having the end portions thereof extended beyond the edges of the bag and said extended ends of the members adapted to be bent backwardly and around a folded portion of the bag-mouth, substantially as described.
